Almost 20 years have passed since Energy 106 stopped broadcasting on 106.6 fm leaving a generation of dance music enthusiasts with no other local alternatives.

It has existed as an online streaming service for the past number of years, and if you ask Alexa to play Energy 106 you can get a taste of all the old and new dance, trance and happy hardcore songs they still play.

On Friday they announced they have been granted a licence to once again be back on radio, this time legally under DAB+ format launching in early 2025.

Will it have any success coming back into today’s heavily pop dominated market? Will it be able to tear people away from the copy and paste local stations that play the same damn 10 songs on repeat? Will Downtown/Cool still have a vendetta against them? Only time will tell.

  1. It’s unrelated to the old Miles Johnston pirate station

Used to broadcast from “alien mountain” on the Co Armagh/Monaghan border with a huge broadcast tower and several antennae with megawatts of power directed towards Belfast

Playout was pre recorded and on VHS audio tapes

  2. I used to love their stings between songs, they weren’t afraid to play songs with swearing on it or even swear in the stings, just complete fun and good vibes all the time. I don’t think that spirit will be back on this new version of the station, but will be mad to be in the car and see Energy 106 written on the screen. Takes me right back to the mid to late 90’s being in secondary school.

  3. was that station affiliated with a music shop in the “In Shops” back in the day. or did i dream it?

  4. Never heard of it, though dance music sucks so that’s probably why.

  5. fucking right!
