World reacts after assassination attempt of Donald Trump

and all this is being broadcast live on American cable [Applause] news get ready get ready we [Applause] ready the podium microphone is still on the Secret Service agents confirm the shooter is down we’re clear [Applause] come let me get my shoes let me get my shoes got you sir I got you sir let me get my shoes hold that in your head it’s bloody so we got to move to the and then they begin to move the former president watch out it was an attempt to assassinate Donald Trump it had failed and he recognized the need for immediate defiance [Applause] he was then bundled into his vehicle and Away the still images capture this extraordinary moment for America Trump Under Fire vulnerable defiant quickly a statement from the former president came I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound shots and immediately felt the bullet ripping through my skin much bleeding took place so I realized then what was happening the former president said and then from his political foe from President Biden a hastily arranged address to the nation the bottom line is that the Trump rally was a rally that he should have been able to be conducted peacefully without any problem but the idea the idea that there’s political violence or violence in America like this is just unheard of the political reverberations from all this are hard to judge right now they cannot be underestimated but the immediate focus is the investigation the witnesses will provide important information for the FBI and they are now leading on it I was in the set of bleachers to the very far left of the podium where Donald Trump was speak president Trump was speaking um you know was there with friends I heard several gunshots um the man beside me uh suffered a gunshot wind to the Head um was instantly killed um fell to the bottom of the bleachers another woman was looked like she got hit in the forearm her hand and then at that point in time uh it was rather chaotic at that point you don’t like the guy don’t vote for him don’t kill him we love the guy we’re going to vote for him you know I mean what what what is up with his violence I mean it’s just it’s just terrible from Sky News analysis of the images from the scene here’s a picture of what happened this is the spot where Donald Trump was speaking the red zone is where the crowd was it’s thought the gunman was on this roof beyond the secure perimeter of the rally about 150 M from the former president this evening we had what we’re calling an assassination attempt against our former president Donald Trump it’s still an active crime scene as I mentioned we have a number of Agents on scene we also are working closely with other federal agencies our state partners and our local police Partners as well on the roof of an adjacent building is the weapon ought to have been used authorities say they’ve identified the dead gunman as a 20-year-old male a young man who tried to change the course of American History it will take time to process the impact of all this the consequences for America and a society already fractured Mark Stone Sky News in Butler Pennsylvania earlier the FBI provided an update on the situation confirming that they’re treating it as an assassination attempt they’ve identified the man they believe carried out the assassination attempt that is 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks this evening we had what we’re calling an assassination attempt against our former president Donald Trump it’s still an active crime scene as I mentioned we have a number of Agents on scene we also are working closely with other federal agencies our state partners and our local police Partners as well we do not currently have an identified motive Although our investigators are working tirelessly to attempt to identify what that motive was I’m joined again now by our panel of Aisha Hazara Paul Goodman and kitty Donaldson um Kitty how do you think America will respond to this uh well you should interesting you should ask we’ve got some I’ve got some relatives out in the states and they were texting over T night saying um first of all shock and concern about the state of politics in America secondly um that he’d effectively won um Donald Trump had effectively won in November but then thirdly and this was quite interesting the kind of um the conspiracy theories that started almost immediately after he was shot oh you know the the guy this was a setup or something and I think that’s a narrative we’ll see playing out in the next few days I expect we will see that for the next few years it’ll be they never near they never actually landed on the moon for you know for years and years yes exactly and all about JFK and so forth yeah Paul do you think that um it’s going to have an impact generally uh do you think do you agree will have an impact on the race and maybe other races I think the moment everyone will remember as we’re saying is the film and the photograph because it’s in that moment you find out something about the character of the person and you know Trump’s response is to get up literally rising from from a situation that looks that could have been death with his his fist clench and it’s an image no one will will forget it’s in that moment you find out about the person just as we found out about Ronald Reagan when he was shot and his response is is to make jokes honey I forgot to duck and then you know when he said to the surgeons you know I hope you’re all Republicans it’s the moment when you found out more about the character of of Reagan if you knew nothing about him than any other time and This ferocious fighting sort of bristling character of trump came out in that moment and it will stamp itself upon this election and upon the way we think about Donald Trump yeah I think I don’t know if we can call it up but there is an image of him with the flat there it is uh Asia that’s going to be part I mean it’s going to be front and center of the election campaign isn’t it that well look you know they say a Picture Tells A Thousand word that is going to be probably the defining optic of of this incred ibly important um uh election and you know Donald Trump is somebody who sort of trades on on the brand of being the strong man and there’s probably no more proof of the strong man than than what happened to him to come up to rise up the blood dripping down his face the fist as Paul said in in defiance that is going to capture the hearts and emotions of of so many people I think Kitty is absolutely right I think look I think this election was probably lost after the first debate the Dreadful debate where Jo Biden had a terrible night I think the election is now won for Donald Trump now I think what has happened is absolutely horrific the idea that this is how you do your politics and I think the conspiracy theories are going to absolutely fly there is also though a really really important consideration about what is going to happen to America um if Donald Trump wins and it does look like he’s going to win are we able even now going to be able to have a proper debate in American politics about what the choices are I don’t even think there’s going to be space to have that debate because you know if you thought things were polarize before you ain’t seen nothing yet I think that the um the the the question that arises out out of all this is one about tone in politics because you know you can’t draw a straight line from the invective uh between politicians but I I suspect that there’s no doubt that there is something that’s changed in the atmosphere both there and to some extent here Paul certainly true I mean here of course we’ve had we had two MPS k killed in recent years you had Joe Cox killed and um David Amos also killed and quite apart from people being murdered there is as you see there’s the whole tone and sort of miasma of the thing with women MPS driven off social media like Twitter or X as it is now just having said all that I just have a a like question mark about that thesis because there is this history as I was you know saying earlier as we were discussing earlier of violence against American Presidents the Reagan assassination attempt the famous killing of of of Abraham Lincoln the assassination attempt on theod Roosevelt so there is sort of something in the air of American politics which makes this happen and it happened even in the happier sunnier optimistic days of the 1960s with Kennedy u doesn’t just happen in these troubled times having said that we heard in the campaign recently here uh many MPS talking about the way they were being harassed uh in at their homes and in the street um you cover this Kitty do you think that there is a cause for extra concern yes I I it feels like the world’s a lot more Angry than it used to be and I don’t know whether that’s true or whether it’s more concentrated and people feel able to act but going in standing outside um K st’s home and protesting is just you know beyond and happened Jacob re smok didn’t it a few years ago and his children were harassed just just unacceptable and and I think people or the organizations that that some of these people are part of need to recognize that there are limits um but actually just talking about the image and you you’ve put up another image and in that one that you’re showing now the uh Trump that’s not quite so iconic is it he looks like a sort of slightly scared older guy there so you know be interesting which one sort of beams around the world look I I think we should not be complacent about the risk to um our politicians and people in public life there is an absolutely horrible dark nasty anger that you see now which is actually rewarded on social media you know the the the more awful you are about somebody the algorithm kind of rewards that we have become so emotively sort of polarized this football ification of not just politics but every single issue it’s a binary choice voice you know and if you don’t support my side on one issue we don’t have to just disagree with you we have to come after you and absolutely destroy you now Paul has mentioned two MPS that lost their lives let’s not forget there are so many MPS now that have to have Panic buttons in their house they have to have routine police briefings about what to do if they’re attacked when they’re out with their children um Rosie Cooper was a former um MP there was a a horrible farri right plot to kidnap her and and murder her Diane Abbott um has a huge amount of of abuse that the list goes on and look we live in a world where PE Kitty is right people are very angry and justifiably so there are terrible things happening across the world but for some reason through social media we have sent a signal to people saying if you’re really cross about something in the world it’s okay for you to threaten somebody here you know we know tensions are running really high on Gaza I know so many um MPS who have said that they have really genuinely feared fors eles or something happening to a member of their family yeah I wonder if we are giving mainstream media a free pass here are we part of the amplification you know talked about social media and everybody’s got a view about that but I wonder looking at some of the people there who were clearly angry at some of the networks particularly American networks to what extent we are also part of this story well up to a point I suppose that’s true and I think you can also to ask some questions of the of the political parties just for myself I wouldn’t like to see a Britain in which the conservatives as it were become the party of Israel and India and labor become the party of Pakistan and Palestine you know I like to see a mix of views within political parties rather than political parties D dividing up on tribal terms now that’s not happened yet but I can see signs that it might and I personally felt um unhappy in the general election looking at the way that some voters of one religion would be voting conservative and others of another would be voting labor or for Independence that’s communalist politics and it’s a bad thing yeah Paul’s been sort of mildly opaque about it but I let’s make it plain uh Hindus and siks in this last election pretty much went wholesale against labor and to the conservatives uh and in constituencies where there’s substantial Muslim vote the the labor votes took an absolute whacking uh probably in constituencies where there were more than 20% it went down between 15 and 20% constituencies more than 10% Muslims went down 10% do you think so can I just make with just I want think it’s really important to see yes the labor the Muslim vote in some labor constituencies went down significantly but a lot of Muslims still voted I think it’s very important not just to lump everybody together all I mean I’m from Muslim background all Muslims do not think exactly the same a lot of Muslims have the same concerns that other people do cost of living crisis Public Services opportunity for their for their children they’re also quite economically marginalized as well and then you have the Gaza overlay on top of that I’m I’m sure that’s right Asia but I think the patterns we were we we were following it uh overnight are so striking and so unusual I think for this country it’s it’s hard to walk past it I I you’re completely right you can’t identify people just by their religion or indeed their ethnicity but something seems to be happening which we haven’t seen before could he I think that’s right and but just to go back to the point about um violence against MPS I I’ve I’ve had private conversations lots of female MPS both on the Tory side and the labor side and in sort of harsh tones they whisper about the death threats and the threats to their children and this stuff has never made some of the times it’s made public but but actually there’s a lot of it behind the scenes because you sort of don’t want to amplify it you don’t want to go on you want to go on the social media or or mainstream media and say I’ve been subject to this because it just encourages The Crazies to to do it more I guess so it’s it’s I think I think there needs to be be a reset of um how we treat people in public life but then quite a lot of it is imported from America and we’ve seen this today we’ll come back to this in a second but before we car in our discussion I just want to bring you Donald Trump’s own words a few hours after the assassinated attempt he took to his uh truth media Social account to issue this statement he wrote I want to thank the United States Secret Service and all of law enforcement for their rapid response to the shooting that ju just took place in Butler Pennsylvania most importantly I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the rally who was killed and also to the family of another person that was badly injured it is incredible that such an act can take place in our country nothing is known at this time about the shooter who is now dead I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound shots and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin much bleeding took place so I realized then what was happening God bless America in a moment we look at the political ramifications of last night’s [Music] attack so we’re very excited um at square cut the production company I formed when I left Sky uh because we think that America’s really going to embrace Cricket they did very well in the recent World Cup made it through to the final eight they beat Pakistan um and they’re are coming force and going on at the moment is a tournament called the mlc Major League cricket it’s a league made up of the likes of San Francisco Washington um Seattle six clubs play each other then there’s a a knockout round and by the end of July there’s a there’s a World Cup and we’re producing a podcast us Cricket daily available on Amazon um and uh Spotify and apple Tik Tok Instagram where you can look back on the day’s play and we look forward to the next day’s game cricket is coming to America in a big way do they understand it yeah they do in fact cuz when you’re at your in and when you’re America played Canada in September 1844 30 years before England played Australia oh okay America was ahead of the game as they are in so many ways they’ give them a run for the money on a good day they’ve got some good players and the big thing about the mlc the Major League cricket tournament is the players come from all over the world they’ve got the likes of Pat Cummings the Australian Captain playing at the moment uh for the San Francisco team um Ponting is the coach of the Washington team they’re attracting good players it’s going to be an exciting League T20 is the fastest growing format of cricket around the globe I’m Dominic WN Sky International Affairs editor covering a world that seems to to be unraveling War unrest Revolution it’s our job to try to make sense of it all [Music] as we wake up this morning America is still digesting last night’s events the first assassination attempt against a US presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan in 1981 and alongside providing some some of the most harrowing political scenes you can imagine it almost certainly upended the presidential race with Republicans Nationwide descending on Wisconsin for the National Convention starting tomorrow attending that conference is Greg Swenson the chair of Republican overseas UK which represents the Republican party members he joins me now good morning Mr Swenson um what what is the mood amongst party officials and activists uh tonight I guess for you yeah yeah it’s 3:00 a.m. here in Chicago I’m on my way up to Milwaukee for the convention Trevor but yeah I I think the obvious reaction was just just shock you know my happened to land at O’Hare when the when the when the news occurred and you know my phone was ringing off the hook needless to say but yeah a lot of shock and and a lot of relief that that the president is okay a lot of Sympathy for the the other victims um who who who actually died in in in the assassination attempt so yeah I mean I think it’s it’s a lot of shock and everybody’s just digesting it but good news that he’s okay and uh and I think that you know obviously this is a huge moment in history in in US politics um one small Point uh we told that or we understand that the shooter uh was a registered Republican do you attach any significance to that no not at all I mean it’s so early we don’t know a whole lot about the shooter and and uh you know there’s all kinds of speculation but you know obviously you know assassination attempts are usually made by you know people that have real issues so I wouldn’t read into any of the political affiliation um and and you know hopefully we’ll learn some more about this in the next day or two but um you know I think the fact that he you know he’s a registered Republican probably shouldn’t mean much to anybody uh this of course is first and foremost a human event and the first reaction is about everybody’s safety and the uh ghastly fact that somebody or two people have died and uh others are uh in a critical state but it is also a huge political event what impact do you think this is going to have on the presidential race well if anything it would probably be a positive for president Trump you know you’ll you’ll have some sympathy obviously you’ll have the fact that you know he showed some bravery the way he reacted I thought was great um not just on the scene but also later on his truth social post and so you know hopefully that continues and and what I also would hope is that you know the the Trump derangement syndrome is is dialed down a bit you know and the rhetoric is dialed down a bit and so you know hope perhaps this could even ultimately be a positive not just for the campaign for for president Trump but but also just for the political dialogue in general that’s an that’s a very interesting point Greg because um the statement that we’ve just heard from Mr Trump doesn’t uh correspond let’s put it that way with the typical Donald Trump uh tweet or message with capitals and attacks on his opponents um yeah what do you you read into that well yeah I think it’s it’s been pretty clear the last few months Trevor that that the president is much more disciplined the campaign in general is much more disciplined this time this time around compared to both 2016 and 2020 so I I hope he continues with that and I think that discipline is is really well received and welcomed by those of us who are supporting Republicans in the in the elections including president Trump so you know he’s I think last night was another example of you know his sort of Newfound discipline in um in not you know necessarily U you know elevating the rhetoric and so I mean he’s still got the personality he does these rallies he he gets people fired up in a very positive way but um but I think that you know so far his reaction has been has been perfect um we were given to understand that one thing that might have happened at the rally gone in the way it we supposed to it’s that we might have heard who his vice presidential pick was going to be um do you think that this event is going to have any impact on that decision I I don’t think so I think you know my guess is because the convention literally starts today um I would imagine he’s made up his mind I don’t I can’t see any scenario where this would change anything about his decision so and you know the rumor right now is that it will be JD Vance the senator from Ohio but that’s sort of unconfirmed and just kind of running around the rumor but we’ll see I mean I would imagine it’ll be today or at the very latest you know before Wednesday at the convention yeah V was uh became famous for his book hillbilly elegy which is a kind of that’s right Memoir of somebody from the uh Rust Belt in America very sort of very Trump and in fact I think he was may have been the first politician to respond last night with a a message of support and sympathy but it was rather striking uh we interviewed a couple of uh people from the Republican party here on Sky last night and I was very struck that they immediately pointed the finger at the Democrats and mentioned Joe Biden in a way uh is that the sort of tone that from what you’ve been saying you want your party to get away from yeah I mean look I think there’s there’s some heated or emotional responses that you’d expect after something like this and you know there’s there’ll be some finger pointing I I don’t know that you could connect some what I would imagine is a lone wolf Lone Wolf criminal to any sort of campaign or or movement but but again I think you know there is some Merit to the argument that the Trump derangement syndrome is just way too elevated and I think that it would be healthy for everybody to dial it down on both sides but especially given um that the Democrats have used you know the justice system they’ve used every possible method to um to punish president Trump and so you know hopefully that it we can get back to arguing on issues and arguing on who who the best candidate is instead of all the sort of rabid hatred on on both sides but also um I think this this could be a moment that maybe dials it down but I understand the reactions because there there has been you know when you look back at the last year with the the indictments and the and all the lawfare I think there’s some Merit to that uh just very briefly uh of course you’re now as you said heading for the convention um Mr Trump will no doubt appear there what’s your expectation of how the week will unfold yeah I think first of all I in the security will be ramped up a bit I mean security would be very tight anyway but I imagine it’ll be elevated I think there’ll be a lot of shock today when people start arriving but I think uh you know I think president Trump will arrive Wednesday or Thursday to you know a real heroic welcome this is um this is actually you know interesting timing and I think on the if you look at the other party the Democrat Party you know it might actually be a good time for you know to to direct attention away from President Biden who’s been getting really beat up in the Press um and and you know you’re seeing the members of his own party politicians here in the US that have abandoned him or calling for him to to step down you know this might distract a a little bit away from from uh President Biden and I thought that the convention was almost going to be overlooked to a certain degree because of the focus on President Biden and his cognitive issues and the the uh chaos in his party but this might actually you know distract from that and and sort of renew the focus on the Republican party this week because of the convention and because of what happened yesterday Greg Swenson Republican overseas UK thank you very much for your thanks tror morning thanks a lot thanks for having me okay still to come more live reaction from a friend of Donald Trump well known to this program Nigel farage [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] let’s get some more reaction to overnight events a little closer to home this time Donald Trump was the reason nidel farise very nearly skipped running for Westminster in the general election the reform UK leader planned to support his presidential campaign Stateside instead but the newly elected MP for clacton remains a firm friend of the former president and I can speak to him now good morning Mr farage morning um your reaction to the events overnight well I was very upset when I heard the news late last night I mean Donald Trump has survived by a miracle frankly but one innocent man is dead two are fighting for their lives in hospital so it is it’s horrible and yet somehow not surprising it it occurred to me that actually if things had gone slightly differently last Thursday in our own election you might have been at that rally because you have essentially done the warm-up for him at some of his rallies yes I I I almost certainly would have been there um you’re absolutely right and of course it’s the convention next week um I’ve now decided I will fly out and see him next Thursday and listen to his acceptance speech I will absolutely do that as a show of friendly solidar uh but I’m afraid you know Donald Trump is not perfect and but some of the things that are allowed to be said about him are frankly appalling and we’ll always have real extremists or even terrorists on either side of the political divide that’s just a fact of life but it almost becomes mainstream you know for millions of people to hate political figures uh and normally this is not because of what they’ve said or done it’s because of what is said about them and yes we know social media plays a role in this but I’m afraid mainstream media does do as well and and and Trevor you know I’ve I’ve been through over a decade of this in fact I had a drink thrown at me as recently as last Wednesday oh we seem to have uh we seem to have Frozen I it seem to we might have lost him okay we’ll try and get back to Nigel farage it in in a moment um Kitty you you were saying uh before uh we went to the break that there is an issue that you’re thinking about what do the Democrats do now abely about this yes and how they react in the next few days will be very interesting I mean we’ve already seen the reaction from the president saying everyone hold on say hold the thought because I think we have forage back okay Nigel yeah you were you were saying of course that you yourself have faced uh some of this I think I suppose the issue here is the one about the way we talk about and to each other um to what extent do you think politicians uh and I include you here have some responsibility for the the polarization that’s taking place yeah but I think the main problem is liberal intolerance uh liberal intolerance that runs through the education system that runs through mainstream media that is common place on X formerly Twitter look that’s not to there aren’t people on the right who don’t say vile abusive things there are but but I’m afraid there is there is increasingly basic too much of one side on this um have you been in touch at all with Mr Trump or his people yes I have um I have I’ve sent I sent a text to Donald himself obviously I’m not expecting a rapid answer he’s got more to think about but no I have spoken to the team uh yeah I mean obviously everybody is horrified and the problem is how do you go on campaigning I mean I fa this in this general election you know milkshake chucked in the face SM thrown at me Stones thrown at me and you start to think well can I carry on campaigning and of course for for Donald Trump the radies are the absolute lifeblood I mean end up to 50,000 people attend these events um you know if somebody with a high powerered rifle from hundreds of yards away can do this uh you know the team we got a lot to think about if I know Trump he’ll probably just continue regardless but but but the impact of this on our politics as a whole is very real and think you know John Major went around the country stood on a soap box campaigned won a general election by doing it could a leading politician even do that now if I can ask you in a way as a fellow um TV anchor rather than as a politician how what do you assess uh this event to what effect do you think this event is going to have on the presidential race is this now Trump’s race to lose well I thought it was for some time to be honest with you um what I what I hope of course is that this proves to be a pivotal moment in not just American but Western politics um and that we start to be a little bit more tolerant of people who have different points of view that is what I hope uh comes out of it but I I won’t hold my breath uh I don’t know if you’ve seen um president Trump’s statement but uh we were just remarking that uh it is in some ways um if you like at the cooler end of the Trump Spectrum in the sense of being measured uh referring to the other people who uh have died or been injured in this um are we likely to see a new more disciplined Trump to be honest with you we’ve seen that I think throughout much of this campaign already uh this is not the Trump of 206 uh I I saw that statement and I thought yeah you know he’s thinking to himself this is absolutely awful but I too have a responsibility you know I don’t want my supporters seeking out revenge attacks or anything of the kind and that’s why he worded it the way that he did as I say I hope I mean hey even Joe Biden used his first name Donald you know one hopes um that we start to talk a bit more about policy uh what the differences are uh and there’s a little bit less inflammatory language and you know you can hear it on CNN every single day if you want to but let’s hope that changes bringing this back home and um I forgive me I uh neglected to congratulate you on your own recent Victory uh now you’re in uh Parliament with four colleagues um do you think this holds lesson for the way that we behave I mean you yourself have already had a little bit of um if I can put it this way ruckus on your remarks on the former speaker I mean come on you know my my remarks on the former speaker was I was contrasting this speaker to him and saying that I thought that Lindsay had brought great dignity and neutrality back to the role I’m I’m I’m not ashamed of saying that okay and as as a new member of parliament I mean what would you like uh Lindy hoil and the uh I spoke this morning to uh Lucy Powell the new leader of the House of commment what do you think they ought to be thinking about in relation to MP’s safety candidate safety and so on because it sounds like this will be a a major issue for our politics in the years to come Lindsey hoil did a big interview in the telegraph yesterday in which he said that MP safety was the one thing that keeps him awake at night um and and that Focus will be even sharper I think after what happened or beid in America overnight uh I have to say I I find it astonishing that members of parliament uh can walk out across the square and get on mondon underground um I I I find it astonishing uh that frankly more MPS aren’t attacked that is how unpleasant so much of the narrative is uh it’s become deeply personal uh and and I I’m afraid and and a lot of the public hate this but if you want people to stand for public office we’re going to have to protect them properly n thank you so much for your time this morning back with our panel next [Music] [Music] that has happened within minutes and now it’s coming from both sides and it’s moving this [Music] way he hey hey only about half a mile from the Turkish coast and that boat seriously overcrowded this is one of the most severe viruses in the world I’m Alex Crawford and I’m Sky’s special correspondent based in IST tble this is going to be the biggest party triple has ever SE that’s it it it got us then there’s a lot of action going on a lot of hits com in [Music] still we aim to be the best and the most most trusted place in news clearly not had very much to eat at all a lot of them extremely thin and very frail look at her arms I can put my entire hand round this is the cocktail of drugs which the doctors at this Hospital have been giving their Corona virus patients made for people who want Clarity in an uncertain world Mother Nature is can be vicious absolutely Savage the world’s largest Falls now down to a trle in places I can’t imagine how much plastic is lying at the bottom of this huge Lake who close and personal over AR this is what makes the job so fantastic stay [Music] back with our panel AA Hazara Paul Goodman and kitty Donaldson Kitty I was asking you about how you think the Democrats might respond to this well in the first place uh President Biden needs to look Statesman like which he has done already and he’s condemned the violence and that’s absolutely right but I I do think um that there will be even more pressure on him to release his delegates now and to let there be a a leadership race that’s uh that doesn’t include him um and whether camela Harris can a takes that position seems most likely outcome and be whether she can beat Donald Trump seems to me increasingly unlikely it it feels I mean does anybody think that actually after this any Democrat could emerge yes I I think you never know what’s going to happen tomorrow it’s supremely unlikely that any Democrat can can beat Trump but um the Biden question is still there he could go someone else could come in we have very short-term concentration now I it’s it’s most unlikely anyone other than Trump will be president when the change comes but you never know I think in practice the only person who could really come in his car Harris because partly because of the money there 90 there’s $90 million pledged to Biden Harris else can accessone she has to be on the ticket to to to to get access to that money but look I mean even the conversation we’ve just had here now right we’re talking about it’s highly likely that Trump is going to win and a big question here for this new labor government is if Trump does win and that’s looking increasingly likely how are they going to to navigate that and I think it’s really interesting the sort of pivot that David Lamy our new foreign Secret’s done because he has used some very critical language of Donald Trump in the past but he is starting to build Bridges with the Trump team he did a big trip to Washington recently when he came back I did an event with him there was actually some senior Democrat people there as well and he told the assemble audience yes of course I had very good meetings with the Biden team but I also had very good meetings with the Trump team and there was a bit of a free s in the audience because they’re quite liberal Progressive people who clearly don’t love Trump but he said look I have got as a future foreign secretary I have got to start building relationships with Trump’s team so I think it’s going to be really interesting to see the sort of labor party kind of pivot to start having some kind of functional relationship I mean David Lamie said to me that from the conversations he had had this time the Trump organization was so much better than it was back in 2015 2016 they were much more organized they were much more focused the data they had was really really um precise and really clear and I you know Tim Shipman from the Sunday Times did an interesting write up of of his visit and said that in many ways David Lamy was hoping to almost become a you know to have good relations with Team Trump almost be a kind of trump Whisperer if you like I mean as you see Trump’s got a long memory he does remember stuff that people have said about him who Bears grudges yes and holds him he nurses his wrath as they say in Scotland yes but the expectation now I guess at the labor in labor High command is that this is the person they’re most likely to have to deal with and they’re going to have to they’re going to have to have a grownup respectful relationship despite what a large chunk of the labor party thinks about Donald Trump Kitty your big signal about of how they deal with Donald Trump is uh story that you’ve been pursuing which is who they put in the embassy on um is it Massachusetts Avenue in in Washington absolutely so um rishy sunak had told um Tim Barrow who’s the current national security advisor that effectively the job was his and he would become the UK’s ambassador to Washington and one of the very first acts of the labor government was to come in and say um sorry mate you’re not having it basically um and what happens to him next no one seems quite clear um but and then the sort of next question is to who does get that job and do you make it a career civil servant um and I think there’s a lot of people in the foreign office who think that you know this is the prime posting um and if they’ve worked for years in some sort of Dusty Outpost somewhere that that actually you know they should earn that right to be in Washington or do you put a political appointee in and there’s several names in the frame there’s uh David milleran former foreign secretary um Peter mandelson uh who’s in the House of Lords and uh Kathy Ashton as well um and it’ be interesting which where the kind of pendulum swings now and who’s now the favored candidate and whether they can be an effective Trump Whisperer too you you have to be very old to remember this but um the uh the Callahan government in 1970s appointed a man called Peter Jay who in fact was James kahan’s son-in-law who was clearly a straightforward political appointment so this particular appointment has always been uh it’s it’s always been at the whim and you could a signal of what our relationship with the Americans is I think when a new government comes in like this and the government is of one complexion it’s a a leftwing government and you have the possibility of a right-wing government in America there’s a lot of hopeful mood music and talk about people being able to work out a relationship between the two what David Lamy may be up to what happens if it gets really tough I just thinking back to what happen when we had Tony Blair in office and you had George W bush going one way and the hearts and souls of the labor party going the other what happens if you replicate that situation with Donald Trump now it’s true Trump’s been a great deal more disciplined I think your Republican guest was quite right about that he’s running a very discipline campaign but truthfully most of us have no idea what a trump foreign policy would be like and in the past it’s it’s been highly emotive so he looks at some pict as he doesn’t like from Syria and decides he’s going to bomb Syria he decides he’s had enough of certain uh Iranian leaders and launches a strike he decides on the other hand he wants to have a completely different relationship with North Korea you don’t know where it will go and this will be really or could be really very difficult for labor let me just bring you quickly some of the reaction from British political leaders uh the Prime Minister sakir stama released the following statement I’m appalled by the shocking scenes at president Trump’s rally with we send him and his family our best wishes political violence in any form has no place in our societies and my thoughts are with all the victims of this attack and Rishi sunak said horrified by the attack in Pennsylvania in a democracy you must be able to speak freely and stand for what you believe in violence and intimidation must never be allowed to Prevail my thoughts and prayers are with President Trump and the victims of this appalling attack um Aisha everybody is having to do a really quick pivot and you know it’s easy to be cynical about it but uh this is the the this is important for the relationships between states what we do about the Middle East what we do about Ukraine it’s there’s a reset going on already isn’t there there’s a huge reset I mean this election in in America very important for America it’s important for the whole world particular now as you’re seeing these kind of different currents in in geopolitics you are seeing a new alignment it isn’t just the dominance of the West anymore you’ve seen the rise of the global South you’re seeing new powerful alliances just look at you know um prime minister Moody getting a very warm reception from President Putin these kind of plates are shifting and the the global politics are as important as our domestic politics now and I think Paul is right I think the LI the the path ahead if it is President Trump will be unpredictable we know that foreign policy is often a a flash point particularly for a labor government but I think what you have seen from from K starma very resolutely is a sort of country first party second message and I think that even if there are very very difficult moments on foreign policy and there will be a lot of pressure from labor activists and and the left I think Karm and David Lamy will think what’s firstly what is in the interest of of the United Kingdom a hall just 5 seconds each are we’re going to see a different Trump now oh I I think it’s the same sort of you know revised reform rather more cautious Trump I mean he is who he is right thank you all very much that’s it from us this week see you back next Sunday [Music] [Music] [Music] good morning this is Sky News today it’s 10:00 the top stories take a look at what happened do M A gunman tried to assassinate Donald Trump the former president ducked to the ground before being rushed Ed Away by Secret Service agents he was then bundled off the stage but raised a fist to his supporters before being taken away in an armored vehicle Donald Trump later confirmed on social media he was shot in the ear leaving him covered in blood this evening we had we’re Rec calling an assassination attempt against our former president Donald Trump the FBI has named 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks as the alleged gunman this aerial footage shows a body lying alongside a rifle it’s also been confirmed that a member of the audience was killed with two others critically injured women were crying around me screaming it was it was it was chaotic President Biden spoke to Donald Trump following the attack before addressing the nation there’s no place in America for this kind of violence it’s sick it’s sick it’s one of the reasons why we have to unite this country we cannot allow for this to be happening we cannot be like this we cannot condone [Music] this good morning a Gman has tried to kill Donald Trump in an attempted assassination shots were fired towards the former US president during a rally in Pennsylania piercing his right ear he was rushed to safety after being hit and is said to be doing well The Spectator was killed and two other people remain in a critical condition the alleged gunman was shot at the scene and the FBI has named him as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew krooks here’s our us correspondent Mark Stone Donald Trump had been at the podium for just a few minutes in Butler Pennsylvania the latest of so many campaign rallies this one familiar like all the others and then it happened take a look what happened go down down down down watch and listen again take a look what happened two pops Trump grabs his ear then falls to the ground then a flurry we doing we doing then what appears to be one more shot and the piercing screen [Applause] it’s not clear at this point if he’s been hit how injured he might be and all this is being broadcast live on American cable news guys here get ready get ready we [Applause] ready the podium microphone is still on the Secret Service agents confirm the shooter is [Applause] down let me get my let me get my I got you sir I got you sir let me get my shoes hold that in your head bloody so we got to move to and then they begin to move the former president okay watch out it was an attempt to assassinate Donald Trump it had failed and he recognized the need for immediate [Applause] Defiance he was then bundled into his vehicle and Away the still images capture this extraordinary moment for America Trump Under Fire vulnerable defiant quickly a statement from the former president came I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound shots and immediately felt the bullet ripping through my skin much bleeding took place so I realized then what was happening the former president said and then from his political foe from President Biden a hastily arranged address to the nation the bottom line is that the Trump rally was a rally that he should have been able to be conducted peacefully without any problem but the idea the idea that there’s political violence or violence in America like this is just unheard of the political reverberations from all this are hard to judge right now they cannot be underestimated but the immediate focus is the investigation the witnesses will provide important information for the FBI and they are now leading on it I was in the set of bleachers the very far left of the podium where Donald Trump will speak president Trump was speaking um you know was there with friends I heard several gunshots um the man beside uh suffered a gunshot went to the Head um was instantly killed um fell to the bottom of the bleachers another woman was looked like she got hit in the forearm her hand and then at that point in time uh it was rather chaotic at that point you don’t like the guy don’t vote for him don’t kill him we love the guy we’re going to vote for him you know I mean what what what is up with this violence I mean it’s just it’s just terrible from Sky News analysis of the image from the scene here’s a picture of what happened this is the spot where Donald Trump was speaking the red zone is where the crowd was it’s thought the gunman was on this roof beyond the secure perimeter of the rally about 150 M from the former president this evening we had what we’re calling an assassination attempt against our former president Donald Trump it’s still an active crime scene as I mentioned we have a number of Agents on scene we also are working closely with other federal agencies our state partners and our local police Partners as well on the roof of an adjacent building is the weapon thought to have been used authorities say they have identified the dead gunman as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew krooks from a town an hours drive to the South a young man who tried to change the course of American History it will take time to process the impact of all this the consequences for America and a society already so cured Mark ston Sky News in Butler Pennsylvania and Mark sends us this update from the scene in Pennsylvania last night something extraordinary happened this field uh in Pennsylvania will now become will now always be known as the place where um a former president was almost assassinated and it really was a very very close call look at the images here you can see um Donald Trump just moments after a flurry of bullets one of them hitting his ear uh it was I mean that is how close uh it was he Rel released a statement shortly afterwards saying that he could feel uh the bullet W whooing past uh his ear the gunman uh was on a roof outside the the uh the area of the rally itself uh just over my shoulder there that’s where the rally took place beyond that on on the uh the left hand side that is where there is a building an adjacent building and on top of that building uh the 20-year-old man with a um automatic weapon uh was fired uh several shots you can see the building there and those shots rained down on those who were in uh the r who were at the rally um one person died two people are in a very serious condition Donald Trump himself is not in a serious condition injured as you saw whisked away very quickly by the Secret Service who Trevor clearly did a very good job in the aftermath it looks almost textbook he drops to the floor as a former president he would know what the protocol would be when something like this happens uh but they quickly surround him on top of him shielding him get him off the stage into the car and Away um but the the what happened before that that is um what uh will now be the subject of a of a very very difficult investigation how was a shooter allowed to be so close to the president about 100 50 m away not inside the Cordon itself but close close enough uh to create this extraordinary moment an extraordinary moment for America and I wonder what the political uh consequences of this will be very serious indeed I’m sure Mark Stone in the US Forest well as shots rang out at the rally in Pennsylvania members of the crowd were seen ducking and hiding we know that one individual in the audience was killed and two others were seriously injured we’ve heard from from an eyewitness who helped to carry a victim who is believed to have died at the incident I was attending the rally um I was in the set of bleachers the very far left of the podium where Donald Trump was speak president Trump was speaking um you know was there with friends I heard several gunshots um the man beside me uh suffered a gunshot wound to the Head um was instantly killed um fell to the bottom of the bleachers another woman was looked like she got hit in the forearm her hand and then at that point in time uh it was rather chaotic at that point because everyone half the people were looking because I thought it was fireworks I knew it was gunshots right away my friend you know hit the deck I was kind of looking around just trying to see where the shots were coming from it seemed to me like the shots were coming from behind the bleachers it seemed to me the man got hit in the head from behind um he was killed instantly as far as I could tell and at that point a state police and a SWAT team you know showed started evacuating the bleachers and then I helped carry the man out of the bleachers to a tent that was behind in the immediate aftermath of the incident of the crowd dispersed we heard from an eyewitness who was three rows back from the stage where Donald Trump had been speaking shots came from my left 50 ft from my left I’d say uh six or eight shots this it sounded like firecrackers it wasn’t a a a heavy heavy weapon it was a uh Small Arms fire and um we all hit the ground uh people on the p on the bleachers scattered uh sadly I’m hearing there were two civilians that were hit and I’m hearing that it was not well so uh I don’t know of their condition but it’s when state is not good president Trump exited the stage blood coming from his right ear as he was pping his fist in the air so the Pres former president’s fine and from what we’ve been told as well former president Trump is fine to his Rea to your reaction to that news overall he is f he he’s president Trump this is what he does uh like we all saw it and um I’m standing like an idiot I’m I me belief that he’s fine and overall the fact that this even happened at all I mean it’s it’s only hate to say it’s historic it’s terrible this this is human nature this is what we do I don’t want to go political on this but I believe in my opinion much of it comes from the left but um that hatred that has developed and taken over this uh campaign so it’s what it is it’s a shame and the fact that basically it just happened all of a sudden everyone hit the ground kind of what was going through your mind in that moment panic panic yes we all we hit the dirt and uh I saw the Pennsylvania State Police with the suspect and they guided him out appropriately women were crying around me screaming it was it was it was chaotic and something like this happened in that was supposed to be a peaceful event oh it was definitely not peace your thoughts about it I going to say president Trump was probably and I’m pretty sure it’s trying to get out I feel the maybe two minutes into his speech three and this the shots arose then again we had to come through in the mag site a MAG magal detector it was fully secured by Secret Service one per entrance and uh the they did a good Shakedown they shook us all down well another witness told a CBS reporter that they had earlier seen the gunman clambering over the roof and even reported him to officers at the scene I was up at the fence line um saw the guy move from roof to roof talked told an officer that he was on the roof um the officer come looking I went back to where I was standing um heard that there was somebody that could see the person so I went back to where they were standing saw the person went back and told the officer again that if he goes back to that particular spot he can see the person figuring that he would go in radio and when I turned around to go back to where I was is when The Gunshot started and then it was just chaos and we all came running away and that was that was that um let me get this right so you actually saw the man on top of the roof behind us yes and you’re saying people reported that to law enforcement saying there is a man on the roof of the building yes there were two two officers that were actively search you could tell they were searching and looking for somebody and we just tried helping telling where the guy was and they at some point somebody obviously found him or the snipers found him and um that was the end of his decisions did you get a good look at the guy on the roof I did not have a good look at him but um I just seen him going from one building to another there was a little Gap in between and he went and when I went back to talk to see the people that I heard that could see him um seen a quick Li look at him there and then went to the officer to tell the officer and he just that was all that I all that I got how many gunshots did you hear I have no idea it was at first I didn’t know what I heard and then once it became clear what I heard that it was just getting out of there and um I helped helped a lady that had a four-year-old kid helped them get out and that was that was it we were done and everybody went home you seem you’re obviously shaking up right now just talking to me a little bit it’s not every day that you’re that close to anything like that we can bring you now the latest pictures of Donald Trump these came in during the night our time they show Mr Trump disembarking a plane after landing in New Jersey just a few hours after the shooting he also took to his truth media Social account to issue the following statement he wrote I want to thank the United States Secret Service and all of law enforcement for their rapid response to the shooting that just took place in Butler Pennsylvania most importantly I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the rally who was killed and also to the family of another person that was badly injured it is incredible that such an act can take place in our country Donald Trump continued nothing is known at this time about the shooter who is now dead I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound shots and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin much bleeding took place so I realized then what was happening God Bless America Donald Trump finishes off there and the hours following the event politicians and world leaders were quick to issue their condemnation posting on social media site X the former president Barack Obama wrote there is absolutely no place for political violence in our democracy although we don’t yet know know exactly what happened we should all be relieved that former president Trump wasn’t seriously hurt and use this moment to recommit ourselves to Civility and respect in our politics Michelle and I are wishing him a quick recovery former President Bill Clinton also wrote on X violence has no place in America especially in our political process Hillary and I are thankful that President Trump is safe heartbroken for all those affected by the attack at today’s rally in Pennsylvania and grateful for the Swift action of the US Secret Service here in the UK prime minister sakir starma released the following I am appalled by the shocking scenes at president Trump’s rally and we send him and his family our best wishes political violence in any form has no place in our societies and my thoughts are with all the victims of this attack joining me now from New York is Charlie Cooper a former military and political adviser to the US government good morning to you Charlie thank you for joining us what’s your reaction to what happened in Pennsylvania well Matt it was a stunning turn of events last night in a campaign that has already been marked by an unbelievable amount of volatility and a lot of ups and downs it’s important to remember that political violence while not totally unprecedented even in the United States we like to think of ourselves as the beacon of democracy uh much like the UK political violence does happen here and and actually not too far in our distant past I’m not just talking about the assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan and on uh Robert F Kennedy Jr who was running for president in 1968 but as recently as three and a half years ago there was a storming of Capitol Hill on January 6 2021 when supporters of then president Trump tried to stop the electoral process we’ve entered a very frankly sad and Dangerous Time in the United States where the political tensions are raising at at a at a really rapid rate and the campaign itself is getting much much testier both sides are coming out with more and more vitriolic rhetoric more and more Angry rhetoric negative advertising attacks on social media and as shocking as today was I have to say it it in some ways it wasn’t it’s surprising to me that something like this hadn’t happened earlier you really can feel a palpable sense at many of the political rallies here on both sides for Democrats and Republicans that people are angry and they’re frustrated and they’re accusing the other side of Foul Play and I think last night it really culminated in something that hopefully reminds all Americans that this type of rhetoric and this type of violent action has no place in our system Charlie I mean you’re you’re right political violence has happened uh throughout US History uh but gun violence too let’s not forget that I mean that is a regular occurrence in the United States and here it is uh right up against the Democratic process again absolutely gun control is a is a massive debate here in the United States and it’s one that actually many other countries don’t face we have it enshrined in our Constitution that all citizens have the right to bear arms that government can’t stop that but there’s always a debate about what extent that Amendment reaches what Weaponry is and is not okay who should and should not have access to that in in an ironic twist it’s the Republican party that is often seen as being the defender of gun rights in this country against many attempts on the Democratic side to limit those uh uh limit those rights we don’t yet know about the shooter where he acquired the weapons we don’t know his motives his background there’s a whole lot we have we have yet to learn it will be interesting to see whether or not the weapon that was used in last night’s attack was purchased legally how he got his hands on this weapon how he was able to get the weapon to the site that that he was using uh and it will it will spark an interesting debate especially on the right and in Republican circles uh about the extent of gun rights given the fact that one of those guns was just used to nearly take out their candidate for president look whatever the motivation there will be questions around what the security services did or didn’t do but I just want to come back to this idea that this could inflame tensions we’ve seen President Biden uh want to try and calm things down other moderate voices on all sides saying the same thing but also Republican voices pointing the finger JD Vance the oh high senator who is we think leading the race to become uh Donald Trump’s running mate in the election he’s already blaming Democrat rhetoric for this we’d like to think that in A Moment Like This the country would come together and Unite and condemn this kind of violence and it’s true that everyone is condemning it but the finger pointing unfortunately began very quickly after this happened when no facts had been known uh it’s unclear whether or not this person had a political agenda or not it’s easy to assume that people forget though that when Ronald Reagan was was nearly assassinated early in his first term the shooter had no political agenda whatsoever he was actually trying to attract the fancy of a of a movie star Jody Foster at the time time uh he was delusional uh so the idea that this can easily be attributed to uh political speech on one side or the other or violent speech on one side of the aisle or the other I think it’s way too soon to tell but it’s not surprising that both sides are now looking at the other and blaming them for the increase in the rhetoric when you go back and you talk to people in the US about when the when the rhetoric changed when things became more toxic and more partisan both parties will blame blame the other each party has an example that they look to to say that’s when it started we were playing by the rules and the other side decided to make it nasty the reality is that isn’t the case this has been a slow ratcheting up side by side tit fortat that has been going on for decades in this country and frankly it’s culminated in in the political conversation that we have now where the two leading candidates for president attack each other on a near daily basis not violently they do so with words but words internalize in the minds of certain people and potential Killers like we saw last night this is not a clear-cut example of which side was right and which side was wrong toxicity and partisanship in US politics has been going up for decades now and La last night was the culmination and there are a lot of people to blame for this this isn’t just one side or the other Johnny Cooper appreciate your time this morning thanks for joining us on Sky News do it mat you’re watching Sky News today coming up more on the attempted assassination of Donald Trump as I’ll be joined by Trevor Phillips who’s been speaking to the former US president’s friend Nel farrage and football of course for England tonight we will be live in Berlin to look ahead to the Euro’s [Applause] [Music] final so we’re very excited um at square cut the production company I formed when I left sky uh because we think that America’s really going to embrace Cricket they did very well in the recent World Cup they made it through to the final eight they beat Pakistan um and they’re are coming force and going on at the moment is a tournament called the mlc Major League cricket it’s a league made up of the likes of San Francisco Washington um Seattle six clubs play each other then there’s a a knockout round and by the end of July there’s a there a World Cup and we’re producing a podcast us criet daily available on Amazon um and Spotify and apple Tik Tok Instagram where you can look back on the day play and we look forward to the next day’s game cricket is coming to America in a big way do they understand it yeah they do in fact cuz when you’re at your in and when you’re out America played Canada in September 1844 30 years before England played Australia oh America was ahead of the game as they are in so many ways they’ give them a run for the money on a good day they’ve got some good players and the big thing about the mlc the Major League cricket tournament is the players come from all over the world they’ve got the likes of Pat Cummings the Australian Captain playing at the moment uh for the San Francisco team um Ponting is the coach of the Washington team they’re attracting good players it’s going to be an exciting League T20 is the fastest growing format of cricket around the globe I’m Dominic wcor Sky International Affairs editor covering a world that seems to be unraveling War unrest Revolution it’s our job to try to make sense of it all [Music] okay uh let’s shift our attention to football now we’re going to cross to Berlin where excitement is building ahead of England’s huge Euros final against Spain later on tonight our Sports presenter Jackie belra is at the Olympic Stadium where the match will be held Jackie what are we now sort of 10 hours away N9 and a half hours away from kickoff has it been much atmosphere building there in the German Capital well in the center of town there definitely is there were lots of fans arriving here yesterday to take photographs because the England and Spain colors are up on the Olympic Stadium behind me a stadium which was built in 1936 for Hitler’s Olympic Games a stadium with a very dark pass but then sort of rejuvenated in a democratic Germany and now means something completely different and uh England have got a very very good record here they’ve played five matches throughout history and they haven’t lost any of them does that bode well for tonight let’s hope so there was press conferences from both sides inside last night Harry Kane and GTH Southgate speaking for quite a long time and Southgate saying that he didn’t believe in fairy tales but he did believe in dreams and they’ve been working towards winning this trophy for the last four years and Harry Kane saying that he would Swap all his individual honors all his golden boots for the chance to lift the trophy tonight so let’s see as you said just a few hours to go now and we are expecting a lot of England fans who’ve made the journey whichever way possible to be turning up tonight yeah absolutely no doubt look Harry Kane looking for a first trophy during his illustrious career I mean he mentioned those individual uh achievements of golden boots but never actually lifted a trophy so he’ll be a to do that as Captain but let’s talk about the form because I mean it’s a great line from Gareth Southgate saying he doesn’t believe in fairy tales but he believes in dreams it’s been those dreamy moments that have got England this far whereas Spain have been the form team but their boss is not taking anything for granted saying of course anything can happen in a final well that’s right it it is I mean it’s not always the best team that will win a tournament and they have been hands down the best team they’ve won their six matches they’ve looked comfortable they’ve looked spectacular at times you that last goal from Lin yal uh in the in the France match um was just extraordinary and had people in the pubs in the street sort of shrieking no one could believe that he’d done it and he celebrated his birthday yesterday only 17 if he plays um he will be the youngest ever player in a Euros or a World Cup final beating pelle’s record and they’ve also got niiko Williams uh on on the other wing and those two have just you know set Spain a light but um Roder is they think is the key man who can contain rodri tonight will they put Jude Bellingham on him um and England have had those moments of Brilliance haven’t they where they look down and out in matches and then suddenly something really special happens to turn things around often you know in the last few minutes you know look at the Jude Bellingham overhead bicycle kick against Slovakia and then Ole Watkins in the last match against the Netherlands it was audacious and he’d only had four touches of the ball so England have that quality they have that specialness going right through the bench so he’s got an embarrassment of riches to choose from tonight G Southgate we’re all wondering what changes he will make will he start with Luke Shaw on the left hand side will he stick with Kieran tripier will he stick with what he had in the last match and then bring on the Super Subs he certainly has so so so many options there uh this evening he’s he’s quite sort of cautious and conservative so perhaps he will stick with what worked so far let’s go to the center of town and speak to Shor Robbins our Europe correspondent and Sh the fans the England fans have been arriving thick and fast they’ve been driving they’ve been flying they’ve been doing bits of both um and they’ve literally been spending thousands just to be able to say that they were here what’s the atmosphere like where you are the atmosphere is already really great here I’ve just seen people walking around with laminated signs saying I need a ticket people are so desperate to get into the stadium but those who can’t say that they’re just happy to soak up the atmosphere in the fan zone now we can speak to two fans um this is Tom and Wayne they’ve come from Chesterfield now you guys had to fly to colog and then get a train to get here what’s the ticket situation for you we haven’t got one yet but 1,400 few more beers we might end up getting one each yeah five of us as well so on paper Spain obviously look the stronger team what do you think England has though that could make them Edge it we’ve got class players at the moment they’ve been under achieving but I’ve seen it Improvement in last couple of GES that we’re going to do it we’re definitely going to do it and Gareth Southgate says he doesn’t believe in fairy tales but you can dream do you think this is this is the year for England to dream we’ve seen a lot more than they SAR Wednesday fans so last season for us we believe in dream Miracles what does it mean to you even if you can’t get the tickets what does it mean to you to be here oh just being here with the atmosphere the fans would a no brainer to come do you think this is going to be the year that they make recent history who make history touch wouch I think he will yeah well stay positive um as you can see lots more people now turning up they’ve actually closed off the Brandenburg Gates you can’t get close to it but on the other side is a huge fan Zone where we’re expecting 50 to 70,000 people 10,000 tickets have been allocated to England fans in the ium lots of others trying to get there on the black market we’ve heard people paying uh 1,500 3,000 some even saying they’ve seen some advertise for 20,000 so people doing whatever they can to watch [Music] this Shor thank you and we’ve got a few England fans uh early birds arriving here uh just behind me with their England flags and they’ve got a bit of a long wait but they are here early to soak up the atmosphere take some pictures of This Magnificent stadium and it’s worth noting England go into this as The Underdogs Spain The Firm favorites uh they’ve scored more goals in 13 England have scored seven they’ve had twice as many shots on Target and they’ve had a full 24 hours extra to prepare and recover from their semifinal so lots of things pointing to Spain I don’t know if that’s an omen I’m just trying to play it down a little bit Matt just a little bit I I I get it Jackie I get it but but let’s just the the alternative point of view is that England have in Bellingham Kane and foden the best players in the Spanish German and English Premier League as well so you know could go that way listen thanks for now I’m sure we’ll chat a little bit later on as uh the atmosphere grows and uh we get closer to kickoff thanks for now Jackie uh let’s have a quick check on the weekend weather for you now though rain over Central Britain will largely die out today but further rain is heading in for tomorrow most places can expect temperatures a degree or so below average this afternoon but northern England and the far south of Scotland will be significantly colder under a blanket of crowd there’ll be outbreaks of rain there for a time they’ll tend to fade later on you’re watching Sky News coming up we’ll be bringing you all the latest on the assassination attempt on Donald Trump during his rally in Pennsylvania [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] welcome back let’s bring you up today with the developing story this morning the assassination attempt on Donald Trump overnight the former US president was speaking at a campaign rally in Butler Pennsylvania when several gunshots were heard he was then seen ducking to the ground before being bundled off the stage by the Secret Service Mr Trump says he was hit by a bullet to his ear and has thanked Security Services for their quick reaction a member of the audience was killed and two people at the rally were also left with injuries the FBI has named the alleged gunman who was shot on the scene as 20-year-old old Thomas Matthew krooks he is reported to be a registered Republican as the shooting happened the microphone on the stage was live so let’s take a look and a listen back at what happened I want to really see something that said take a look at what [Applause] happened see former president Donald Trump was shot uh in Pennsylvania the bullet he revealed later pierced his right ear that was according to a statement on Truth social from Mr Trump the alleged shooter and a spectator at the rally are dead following what happened just listen in you can hear the Secret Service managing the situation there ready Donald Trump is heard to be saying let me put my shoes on he’s bundled to the ground the FBI says it has I identify the alleged gunman as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks who is from Pennsylvania said to be from about an hour away from where the rally was being held well on his morning program uh earlier on Trevor Phillips was getting reaction to the assassination attempt and uh joins me now in the studio Trevor and uh well a shocking turn of events and given uh the background of recent political violence in our own country people will think about Joe Cox and other MPS who’ve been attacked as well H it really hits Hess it does um uh and Matt I think before I say anything else um I said at the start of our programs this morning that we should always just remember you and I do our job in scrutinizing uh politicians and so on but we should always remember in view of what you’ve just said of course about Joe Cox and David Amos and some of the events that we should always remember that there are thousands of people when they put themselves up for election these days they are putting themselves at risk uh in order to exercise and keep our democracy alive and whatever we say about and to them you know every now and again we should just say thank you to them but some this is extraordinary uh it’s changed all sorts of things but I you know the it’s really hard to imagine um what the impact of this is going to be in in the United States I was watching it last night actually and I was watching Jillian our colleague Jillian Joseph presenting News and Press riew and then she broke into it by the way fantastic professional job for by Jillian and it made me think of watching 911 uh where I I I was watching it with some other some then I was in politics with some other politicians and when we saw the second plane go in there’s a moment where you think no this can’t really be happening and I had that slight feeling here for just a moment no what I’m seeing isn’t what I think I’m seeing it’s extraordinary yes uh and it has happened in the US before there has been political violence the attempt uh on president Reagan’s life people think of JFK and Robert F Kennedy Jr and his own son RFK has been uh reacting to that we’ll we’ll get on to all of that in a second Trevor but before we do I’d like to bring in some of the reaction that you elicited from our own politicians starting with labors Lucy pal well this is an appalling horrific attack on Donald Donald Trump which we fully and completely condemn there is no place for political violence there no place for attacks like this in our democracy and the Prime Minister has already sent his thoughts to Donald Trump and his family and all those involved this is absolutely appalling and Trevor I mean this coming in slap bang in the middle of this year of democracy we’ve had our own election of course the US is on an election footing so many countries are on an election footing this year and it shows the force of democracy and also those who are trying to disrupt it yes there is for some people what you might call the politics of unreason uh people who are not particularly able to or interested in arguing the merits of policy or of philosophy in politics but there is something I think in particularly in Western politics which is kind of unfamiliar which is the investing of all political ideas and desire and enmity in the single individual we see we saw a little bit of it in our election here where it sort of became a contest between one leader and another and what were their personalities like and so on and we’ve seen that really on steroids in the United States where for the last couple of weeks all of the conversation has been about the personality of the sitting president and before that about the personality of his Challenger the issues of what would they do don’t seem to get much of a look in and as a consequence I think that um that the idea that somehow it’s all about that individual and for some people at the margins of society they imagine that maybe the way to get the politics or the future or the the way the approach that they want is to eliminate the person who carries uh the thing the the the polic the philosophy that they don’t like uh we’re in a very very dangerous situation but the rhetoric in recent years has been ramped up and ramped up on all sides I mean in response to this the Ohio Senator JD Vance who is thought to be leading the race to be Donald Trump’s running mate was pointing the finger at Democrats the Democrats have been pulling a lot of their campaign ads in response to this but also people think about the most audacious recent moment of political violence and the attack on Capitol Hill and Donald Trump’s own uh involvement in that things have been ratcheted up severely in recent years yes and I think this issue of of tone is extremely important I agree with you I I’ve got to say I was a little bit shocked last night on our own channel cuz you know we got a lot of the story uh the full story first and all of that and we talk to some people from the United States who did not waste a second in pointing the finger at Joe Biden and at the Democrats now this is not a partisan point but before before we even knew what had happened they had decided to play the man not the ball and by the way this is not one way traffic that happens the other way I mean you hear what people have said about Trump himself in in all sorts of ways and you know what you’d like to think is that this will give everybody pause for thought one of my pists this morning Paul Goodman experienced uh conservative politician however said he thought that that might last a few hours before people come back to this new thing of saying let’s not think about what people what the politician wants to do or what he or she wants to say let’s focus on their character their personality and the deficiencies as we see it in them and that I think is something that we particularly Us in the media we have to start thinking about whether we encourage that whether we amplify it uh and whether we allow it to continue in that vein I’ll come back to that in a second Trevor but first let’s hear from Nigel farage who of course himself uh faced the eye of people when he was out on the campaign Trail and of course knows Donald Trump very well here he is I have to say I I find it astonishing that members of parliament uh can walk out across the square and get on alond underground um I I I find it astonishing uh that frankly more MPS aren’t attacked that is how unpleasant so much of the narrative is uh it’s become deeply personal uh and and I I’m afraid and and a lot of the public hate this but if you want people to stand for public office we’re going to have to protect them properly the Striking thing Matt is that of course had last week’s elections worked out differently and nidel farage not won his seat in Clayton he might have been at that rally because he’s done the warm-up for Donald Trump many times at these rallies and we might be having to be honest a different conversation right now yes look regardless it’s certainly a fork in the road in terms of History isn’t it Trevor appreciate you are joining me this morning chatting about it thanks for that you’re watching Sky News today still to come we will be live at Wimbledon as the Princess of Wales is set to attend the men’s singles final later on her second public appearance since Her diagnosis of cancer [Music] that has happened within minutes and now it’s coming from both sides and it’s moving this way hey hey hey hey only about half a mile from the Turkish coast and it’s evident that both seriously overcrowded this is one of the most severe viruses in the world I’m Alex Crawford and I’m Sky’s special correspondent based in Istanbul this is going to be the biggest party triple has ever seen that’s it it it got us then there’s a lot of action going on a lot of hits com in [Music] still we aim to be the best and the most trusted place in news clearly not had very much to eat at all a lot of them extremely thin and very frail look at her arms I can put my entire hand round this is the cocktail of drugs which the doctors at this Hospital have been giving their Corona virus patients made for people who want Clarity in an uncertain World mother dangers can be vicious absolutely Savage the world’s largest Falls now down to a trickle in places I can’t imagine how much plastic is lying at the bottom of this huge Lake who close and personal with ar this is what makes the job so fantastic [Music] a e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e in through my skin much bleeding took place so I realized then what was happening the former president said and then from his political foe from President Biden a hastily arranged address to the nation we cannot allow for this to be happening we cannot be like this we cannot condone this and so and I want to thank the Secret Service and all the agency including the state agencies that have been engaged in making sure that the people who and we have more detail to come relative to other injur other people may be injured in the audience I don’t have all that detail we’ll make that available to you I may be able to come back a little later tonight but we’ll put out a statement if we don’t if I’m not able to give if if it’s not convenient for you all but the bottom line is that the Trump rally was a rally that he should have been able to be conducted peacefully without any problem but the idea the idea that there’s political violence or violence in America like this is just unheard of the political reverberations from all this are hard to judge right now they cannot be underestimated but the immediate focus is the investigation the witnesses will provide important information for the FBI and they are now leading on it I was in the set of bleachers the very far left of the podium where Donald Trump was speak president Trump was speaking um you know was there with friends I heard several gunshots um the man beside me uh suffered a gun shot went to the Head um was instantly killed um fell to the bottom of the bleachers another woman was looked like she got hit in the forearm her hand and then at that point in time uh it was rather chaotic at that point you don’t like the guy don’t vote for him don’t kill him we love the guy we’re going to vote for him you know I mean what what what is up with his violence I mean it’s just it’s just terrible from Sky News analysis of the images from the scene here’s a picture of what happened happened this is the spot where Donald Trump was speaking the red zone is where the crowd was it’s thought the gunman was on this roof beyond the secure perimeter of the rally about 150 M from the former president this evening we had what we’re calling an assassination attempt against our former president Donald Trump it’s still an active crime scene as I mentioned we have a number of Agents on scene we also are working closely with other Federal agencies our state partners and our local police Partners as well on the roof of an adjacent building is the weapon thought to have been used authorities say they have identified the dead gunman as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from a town in hours drive to the South a young man who tried to change the course of American History it will take time to process the impact of all this the consequences for America and a society already so fractured markstone Sky News in Pennsylvania well Mark sent us this update from the scene in Pennsylvania last night something extraordinary happened this field uh in Pennsylvania will now become will now always be known as the place where um a former president was almost assassinated and it really was a very very close call look at the images here you can see um Donald Trump just moments after a flurry of bullets one of them hitting his here uh it was I mean that is how close it was he Rel released a statement shortly afterwards saying that he could feel uh the bullet W whooing past uh his ear the gunman uh was on a roof outside the the uh the area of the rally itself uh just over my shoulder there that’s where the rally took place beyond that on on the uh the leftand side that is where uh there is a building an adjacent building and on top of that building building uh the 20-year-old man with a um automatic weapon uh was fired uh several shots you can see the building there and those shots rained down on those who were in uh the ra who were at the rally um one person died two people are in a very serious condition Donald Trump himself is not in a serious condition injured as you saw whisked away very quickly by the Secret Service who Trevor clearly did a very good job in the aftermath it looks almost textbook he drops to the floor as a former president he would know uh what the protocol would be when something like this happens uh but they quickly surround him on top of him shielding him get him off the stage into the car and Away um but the the what happened before that that is um what uh will now be the subject of a of a very very difficult investigation how was a shooter allowed to be so close to the president about 150 M away not inside the Cordon itself but close close enough uh to create this extraordinary moment an extraordinary moment for America and I wonder what the political uh consequences of this will be very serious indeed I’m sure in the immediate aftermath of the shooting as the crowd was dispersing we heard from an eyewitness who was three rows back from the stage where Donald Trump had been speaking shots came from my left 50 ft from my left I’d say uh six eight shots this it sounded like firecrackers it wasn’t a a heavy heavy weapon it was a uh Small Arms fire and um we all hit the ground uh people on the p on the bleachers scattered uh sadly I’m hearing there were two civilians that were hit and I’m hearing that it was not well so uh I don’t know of their condition but it’s from when I understand is not good president Trump exited the stage blood coming from his right ear as he was pping his fist of the air so the Pres former president’s fine and from what we’ve been told as well former president Trump is fine to his Rea to your reaction to that news overall he is f he he’s president Trump this is what he does uh like we all saw it and um I’m standing like an idiot I’m I’m in belief that he’s fine and overall the fact that this even happened at all I mean it’s it’s only ha to say it’s historic but this this is human nature this is what we do uh I don’t want to go political on this but I believe in my opinion much of it comes from the left but um that hatred that has developed and taken over this uh campaign so so what it is it’s a shame and the fact that basically it just happened all of a sudden everyone hit the ground kind of what was going through your mind in that moment panic panic yes we all we hit the dirt and uh I saw the Pennsylvania State Police with the suspect and they guided him out appropriately women were crying around me screaming it was it was it was chaotic and something like this happened in that what’s supposed to be a peaceful event oh it was definitely not peaceful your thoughts about it I going to say president Trump was probably and I’m pretty sure it’s trying to get out I still see the maybe two minutes into his speech three and this the shots arose then again we had to come through in the mag site a mag magnetic detector it was fully secured by Secret Service one per entrance and uh they did a good Shakedown they shook us all down the former US ambassador to the UN Kip Tom was just yards away from the stage when the gunshots were fired he spoke to NBC well I was just with the president a few moments earlier before he came on stage and everything seemed like a normal day uh but when he walked down that red car carpet and walked up to the podium uh and after he spoke for about 10 minutes I was sitting in the front row at the end of the runway but uh all a sudden these shots broke out and I think there was people that actually thought it was possibly fireworks but I seen the gun smoke and obviously uh there was a person about 15t behind me that was hit I think severely wounded at least at the least uh but uh nonetheless uh the crowd stayed pretty calm for the most part and uh but you know it sounded like there was six seven shots to start with and then it seemed like there was a little pause and then we heard a different caliber gun uh fired which I assume is probably the Secret Service but uh then I thought I heard another couple rounds come off but it felt like it was behind me but I it could have been the echo did you hear the did did did President Trump say anything no he was just giving a the typ rally speech uh that he typically does everywhere you know and trying to encourage voters to get out and vote and talking about his plan for America but but but as the as the shots rang out did you hear did he cry out uh did someone tell him to get down or was that instinctive yeah we heard that we heard everybody say get down but I think he was already going down um that’s when everybody thought at first maybe he had been hit uh more severely than he was I mean it’s already severe and let’s face it it hit his ear it could have been a little bit closer it could have been disastrous but uh uh when he went down to the ground then he got up he put his fist up in the air and or his hand up in the air so we knew he was okay there are U presumably at least it appears to be a lot of people in that Crowd by now you have heard that one spectator was killed another critically wounded um has it settled in of of of how close a brush everybody in that Arena or setting came tonight yeah you know there was a lot is interesting listening to the people as they Departed the the scene and you know what was going through my mind and of course being a little older than many of those that were there but uh I was recalling the Kennedy assassinations and some of the other attempts that were made during my lifetime and I was recalling those and thinking about those and then moving forward to where we’re at today and this is we still have a problem with this so um it’s shocking uh but most people uh are pretty upset there’s no question about it let’s bring you the latest pictures of Donald Trump now and these came in during the night our time they show Mr Trump disembarking a plane after landing in New Jersey just a few hours after the shooting he also took to his truth media Social account to uh truth social I should say uh to say this I want to thank the United States Secret Service and all of law enforcement for their rapid response to the shooting that just took place in Butler Pennsylvania most importantly I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the rally who was killed and also to the family of another person that was badly injured president Trump continues it is incredible that such an act can take place in our country nothing is known at this time about the shooter who is now dead I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound shots and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin much bleeding took place so I realized then what was happening God Bless America is how Donald Trump finished that on Truth social in the hours afterwards politicians and world leaders were quick to issue their condemnation of what happened posting on social media site X the former president Barack Obama wrote there is absolutely no place for political violence in our democracy former President Bill Clinton also wrote on act violence has no place in America especially in our political process Hillary and I are thankful that President Trump is safe heartbroken for all those affected by the attack in the UK prime minister sakir starma released the following I am appalled by the shocking scenes at president Trump’s rally and we send him and his family our best wishes political violence in any form has no place in our societies and my thoughts with all the victims of this attack we’re joined Now by ey witness s Rob sha who was at the rally good morning to you sir Rob just tell us what you experienced absolutely so I was standing maybe 40 feet from president Trump as he gave his remarks we had all been standing out there for maybe four or five hours and everyone was in a very excited mood they were ready to hear him speak the energy on the campaign has been electric and then about s minutes into his speech beginning he was talking through this chart that was on one of the televisions about immigration and I’m very very grateful to whoever put that chart in his speech because it was because of the Turning of his head to the left and to the right that I think that bullet barely missed him but we heard two rapid uh popping sounds and frankly everyone around me thought that they were fireworks or BB gun very few people registered it as a firearm immediately but we all hit the ground regardless and then saw as Secret Service in their sort of turtle shell formation over president Trump tried to take him out we did see him fist pumping the crowd reassuring them that he was okay but as I looked to my left president Trump was to my right uh we could see that someone had been a lot more severely injured there was a lot of blood on the bleachers and I believe that’s the person who has turned out to be either badly injured or dead so it was it was a shocking experience um haven’t really seen anything like it but I will say that I think president Trump’s fist pumping the crowd probably saved a lot of lives yesterday because this crowd did not behave like a normal crowd in the immediate aftermath of the shooting they were significantly more calm because they had been reassured by the president and were relatively orderly leaving the venue I I appreciate what you’re saying there sir Rob I mean people watching this happen would be surprised RIS that people didn’t just want to get away at that point in time there seemed to be a lot of defiance almost immediately afterwards and people standing up the whole time like you said perhaps they didn’t realize what was going on absolutely there was this almost funny phenomenon I mean it was there I feel like I can say that where people were getting down to the ground and then they would pop their head back up to see what was going on mostly to see what had happened to the president and then you know people around them with maybe slightly cooler heads would say no get back down it’s still not fully safe and there was no guarantee among the audience goers in those uh early moments frankly for the first half an hour or so that the shooter had been killed we just heard a series of gunshots we didn’t know as we would find out later that one of them towards the end was the Secret Service uh killing the shooter and so people really didn’t seem particularly vigilant for their personal safety they were really worried about the president even on the way out I didn’t hear people uh screaming or you know frustrated they were mostly quiet they were mostly walking uh slowly and they were mostly worried uh was President Trump okay look we’ve heard from other eyewitnesses immediately afterwards saying their feeling initially was was Panic which is entirely understandable I mean especially given the regularity unfortunately of shootings uh in the US you didn’t know that this was one person it could have been several I mean now it’s starting to sort of sink in how do you reflect on what you experienced yourself yeah I mean I think it could have been a lot worse uh there was originally rumors that President Trump was going to announce his running mate at this rally and so you could have seen a moment where not only the leader of the Republican party but his anointed Deputy or successor however you’d like to frame it were also killed uh this is one of those moments that will be in the history books regardless but it was almost certainly um very close to being significantly more consequential so I think for those rally goers it’s it’s going to be a highly motivating event I know it certainly is for me realizing the stakes of our politics how existential they are I mean every single person that was in that Arena yesterday is going to walk through broken glass and volcanoes and hellfire to to vote for president Donald Trump but I I think that for the entire Republican party it’s really been a galvanizing cry that uh we have to get this guy elected we have to get him back into the White House because of this specific event that galvanizes people even more you think oh oh absolutely um you know there there’s a line that’s gone around on social media for many many years uh when it comes to supporters of the president which I consider myself among uh is that they’re not going after him because of him they’re going after him because he stands uh between them and us you know talking about the establishment the powers that be in the United States and so um for him to let me just interject a second there because nobody knows as yet as to the motivation of this individual whether or not there was any motivation at all that will come out in the fullness of time but the the final very brief question to you is do you hope though that some of the rhetoric that May from any side or all sides that some of the rhetoric that causes this um divisiveness in American politics perhaps dampens down as a result of this look I certainly hope that the Congressional Democrats and others in the United States that have been saying that President Trump is the incipient rise of fascism dies down if you keep telling people that uh Hitler is about to be elected then plenty of people are going to fill in the gaps and uh decide to do something about it so I certainly hope this soers and calms down a lot of the political rhetoric in the United States this is still normal politics this is an election between Joe Biden and Donald Trump May the best man win um through through ordinary means so yes I I certainly hope that people stop saying that President Trump is some unusually evil figure that is going to destroy American democracy because that’s what led to today sir Rob sha thank you very much indeed for joining us thank you you’re watching Sky News Today coming up will it I’m going to say it come home for England tonight e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e welcome back let’s bring you up to date with the developing story this morning the assassination attempt on Donald Trump in the US we can take a look back at what happened now former president Trump was shot at a political rally in Pennsylvania the bullet pierced his right ear according to a statement from Mr Trump the alleged shooter and a spectator at the rally are dead following the incident the FBI says it’s identified the alleged government as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Kooks who is also from Pennsylvania early this morning Trevor Phillips my colleague spoke to the leader of Reform UK Nigel farage who very nearly skipped running in the general election to support Donald Trump’s presidential campaign in the US well I was very upset when I heard the news late last night I mean Donald Trump has survived by Miracle frankly but one innocent man is dead two are fighting for their lives in but I’m afraid you know Donald Trump is not perfect and but some of the things that are allowed to be said about him are frankly appalling and we always have a real extremist or even terrorists on either side of the political divide that’s just a fact of life but it almost becomes mainstream you know for millions of people to hate political figures uh and normally this is not because of what they’ve said or done it’s because of what is said about them and yes we know social media plays a role in this but I’m afraid mainstream media does as well and and and Trevor you know I’ve I’ve been through over a decade of this in fact I had a drink thrown at me as recently as last Wednesday to what extent do you think politicians uh and I include you here have some responsibility for the the polarization that’s taking place yeah I think the main problem is liberal intolerance liberal intolerance that runs through the education system that runs through mainstream media that is common place on X formerly Twitter look that’s not to say there aren’t people on the right who don’t say vile abusive things there are but but I’m afraid there is there is increasingly inre too much of one side on this um have you been in touch at all with Mr Trump or his people yes I have um I have heard saw another while r for okay and as as a new member of parliament I mean what would you like uh Lindy Hil and the uh I spoke this morning to uh Lucy Powell the new leader of the House of Commons what do you think they ought to be thinking about in relation to MP’s safety candidate safety and so on because it sounds like this will be a a major issue for our politics in the years to come yeah I mean Lindsey Hy did a big interview in the telegraph yesterday which he said that MP safety was the one thing that keeps him awake at night um and and that Focus will be even sharper I think after what happened all be in America overnight uh I have to say I I find it a Asing that members of parliament uh can walk out across the square and get on blonded underground um I I I find it astonishing uh that frankly more MPS aren’t attacked that is how unpleasant so much of the narrative is uh it’s become deeply personal uh and and I I’m afraid and and a lot of the public hate this but if you want people to stand the public office we’re going to have to protect them properly that was Mel farage speaking to Trevor Phillips earlier on joining me now from New Hampshire is Sebastian gerker the former deputy assistant to US president Donald Trump good morning to you your reaction to what happened in Pennsylvania tragic uh an outrage historic in not a good way but sadly utterly [Music] EX for s only people who died were supporters of the president and today somebody tried to assassinate him do you think it’s um a bit too soon to politicize what happened last night I F I I find that comment really strange because I’m stating facts so let let me give you a few incontrovertible ones that aren’t politicizing anything thing the most senior Democrat in America Chuck Schumer said on the steps of the Supreme Court about two of President Trump’s nominees Gorsuch and kavanau you have reaped the world win threatening two supreme court justices because they were nominated by my former boss Maxine Waters a leading Democrat member of the House in public when we were in the White House said the following words if you see a member of the Trump cabinet in public surround them and harass them the current incumbent vice president Cala Harris and again you can fact check all of this raised funds for BLM arsonists to pay for their bail that’s a statement of fact that’s not politicizing anything that is what the Democrats have done and they have said now for n on three years president Trump is a threat to democracy if you say that again and again and again if you say he’s hitlerian on cable news every evening sooner or later somebody’s going to act on that and that’s exactly what we witnessed I’m not politicizing anything they are instigating violence yes but there’s still quite a gap between rhetoric and and action I appreciate you are quoting there you’re saying these are facts but in reality you’re stating an opinion that seems to connect one thing to another we and by the way we don’t Sebastian we don’t know we do not know the motivation of the person responsible is is mind Camp irrelevant to the creation of the Third Reich is D capital and the Communist Manifesto are those just rhetorical tools or did they lead to the death of a 100 million people in the last 100 years don’t be obtuse whoever you are rhetoric leads to action If you deny that you are a pinnacle imbecile sir appreciate your opinion thanks for joining us this is Sky News Today coming up let’s change Tac a little bit and talk football will it come home for England tonight we’ll be live in Berlin to look ahead to the Euro’s final [Music] [Music] that has happened within minutes and now it’s coming from both sides and it’s moving this [Music] [Applause] way hey hey hey hey only about half a mile from the Turkish coast and it’s evident that the boat seriously over crowed this is one of the most severe viruses in the world I’m Alex Crawford and I’m Sky special correspondent based in IST Umble this is going to be the biggest party tripa has ever seen that’s it it it got us then there’s a lot of action going on a lot of hits coming in [Music] still we aim to be the best and the most trusted place in news clearly not had very much to eat at all a lot of them extremely thin e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e uh morning to you James and uh America waking up well it’s the morning after the night before there really isn’t it and as uh as we heard there an historic moment really uh historic and astonishing very shock set of circumstances M we saw it play out as Mark said live on cable news another Trump rally uh the like of which we see on a regular basis but this time uh of course it came to a tragedy the death of one individual two others critically injured and uh Donald Trump of course um suffering that escape but obviously injured as we can see from the pictures we have seen overnight serious question questions to be asked initially about how this was allowed to happen at the uh the Butler Farm Show ground uh it’s an area where uh they host a range of events it’s a flat area uh there are buildings surrounding it and the key question uh uh for the FBI um secret service and others who will conduct an investigation lasting many months they say the key question is how was an individual wielding what appears to be an AR-15 style semi-automatic weapon able to get that close into an elevated position uh in terms of uh the proximity he was something like 150 M away from former president Trump and the advanced security team mat will go to an arena like this days in advance of a a trump event and assess the security requirements the Gathering of a presidential candidate and a former president uh the security there is always tight I’ve been to these occasions uh and it’s a process of application identification you go through airport style security uh and the first thing they do of course is set up a perimeter a safety perimeter within which there can be as close to zero threat as possible the question is where was the perimeter Why didn’t it take in uh the building where the shooter was ultimately located uh and how was he allowed to get there in the first place and how was he allowed to stay there given that law enforcement officials were warned that he was he was present and uh was in possession of a weapon there were police there who were told he was there we have that from eyewitnesses why wasn’t the appropriate action taken before he was allowed to to fire off several rounds so all sorts of uh questions for secret service and others uh to answer President Biden has had briefings a couple of separate briefings from the head of Homeland Security he was at church when this happened yesterday uh on rohoboth beach his weekend family home he’s since been relocated to the White House we had that statement from him uh it may be that we hear again from him in due course in terms of Donald Trump he made his way to New Jersey last night uh was treated in Hospital of course uh and was seen just after midnight getting off uh a plane surrounded by tight security got off the plane uned uh that was New Jersey he does of course um have the Bedminster uh golf club nearby uh no indication yet that we will hear from him today but uh it would be unsurprising we just have that statement as you heard referenced in Mark report where he gave uh his own um his own take uh and his own uh story of what had happened to him while all this this goes on of course um there is the The Fallout the political Fallout questions about the implications of all of this principally uh in Practical terms for the Republican National Convention due to start in uh Milwaukee tomorrow Donald Trump’s plan had been to to go there and be there over the course of several days he is due to be anointed as the Republican nominee due to name his uh vice presidential pick that is the expectation that has been the big political story uh for the past or going into the Republican National Convention JD Vance is the hot tip to to be Donald Trump’s number two to be his pick he um has made a statement of his own in relation to what happened last night um and I’ll read it to you Matt he uh he says this this is JD Vance the man who might be VP or Donald Trump’s VP candidate the central premise of the Biden campaign is that president Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all cost the rhetoric that rhetoric led directly to president Trump’s uh assassination so finger pointing a blame game as to what lay behind this and that kind of comment I suppose entirely in keeping with a politically divided country and a political landscape uh in which there has been a rise in tension certainly and a rise in danger uh associated with uh being in political office running for political office in this country um President Biden last night he called it sick called for Unity and I suppose we wait to see what the implications will be of this incident for the tenor of political debate and and essentially where it goes from here but extremely worrying for mon short of a US presidential election but just just one more quick question to you James because you’re right we wait to see the response but already partisan from many people you mentioned JD Vance there but the imagery from that moment the Defiance of Donald Trump with his fist in the air look his in his instinct is to know how to play this and that imagery well we’ve heard already is is rousing his supporters yeah uh that will you know fight fight fight uh he appeared to say as he was led away and those images that we’re looking at um already iconic images that will run through this presidential campaign and we hear it from his supporters already that this is a man um who won’t be beaten that’s the way they are styling these images and uh you know it was a horrendous situation a very shocking set of circumstances and there can only be sympathy for for somebody at the center of all of that not just for Donald Trump but for the members of the public of course who were caught up in this one who was killed and another two critically injured so um these images will be at the heart of the election campaign to come and the question would be how they are spun by his supporters and by his opponents um are these the images of somebody yes who was at the center of an assassination attempt who has come through it uh with extreme bravery and courage who has put his fist in the air told his supporters to fight um and that you know is that the call to fight an election campaign and will it play into a political environment that is the better for what happened last night that is uh that does pull back from the kind of division and hatred frankly that has been l through the political discourse in this country that’s the big question uh it remains to be seen we we’ve yet to hear from Donald Trump we’re hearing from his supporters we will hear in due course again from Joe Biden the president those two men have spoken of course uh on the phone last night extreme political tension between two extreme political enemies it must be said and perhaps uh a path forward towards uh a better more gentle Al more accommodating political environment perhaps that path is led by these two individuals we wait to see we do James thank you very much indeed well following his release from hospital Donald Trump made his way back to Bedminster which James referred to there these images came in during the night they show Mr Trump disembarking his plane after landing in New Jersey just a few hours after the shooting he also took to truth social to issue the following statement he wrote on his social media I want to thank the United States Secret Service and all of law enforcement for their rapid response to the shooting that just took place in Butler Pennsylvania most importantly I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the rally who was killed and also to the family of another person that was badly injured it is incredible that such an act can take place in our country Donald Trump continues nothing is known at this time about the shooter who is now dead I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear he continues I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound shots and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin much bleeding took place so I realized then what was happening God Bless America is how he finishes his statement in the hours following the event politicians and world leaders were quick to issue their condemnation of what happened posting on X former president Barack Obama wrote there is absolutely no place for political violence in our democracy while former President Bill Clinton wrote on X violence has no place in America especially in our political process Hillary and I are thankful that President Trump is safe heartbroken for all those affected by the attack here the Prime Minister K starma released the following statement I’m appalled by the shocking scenes at president Trump’s rally and we sent him and his family our best wishes political violence in any form has no place in our societies and my thoughts are with all the victims of this attack we can speak now to Ed Hill who’s Global security specialist and a former rawal Marines Commander good afternoon to you good afternoon hard to say from afar of course as to exactly what happened here or what the security services were doing but if you were setting up that situation if you were making sure someone stays safe how would you go about it well we’re talking when when you’re looking after or taking care of someone whose profile is as big as Donald Trump it takes it takes a lot of planning a lot of preparation um and again it’s it needs a lot of it needs the right people with the right experience to to do that job so I think again it’s very easy after the event to sit back and start criticizing because these events do happen we saw it recently in in the UK with uh with Nigel farage and and the the milkshake incident and the aftermath of that everyone becomes very critical but when you’re looking after someone of the the magnitude and someone who’s as uh divisive if you like of trump then you have to realize that there are people out there that that don’t like him there are people out there that that want him dead so you have to put plans in place to mitigate any possible eventual when someone wants to get out there on the campaign Trail and speak to people speak to voters face to face how do you find the right balance between that and keeping them safe yeah it it is a difficult balance to be fair um and again it’s it’s within the interest of politicians to go out and mix with the public and be amongst the public so it is a very very fine balance and again it comes into having the right planning the right preparation contingency plans and being alert being alert to eventualities considering all possible eventualities and having plans in place for those but it is having said that it is difficult and there will be hiccups there will be things like this that um that do happen uh and again I’ll I’ll go back to the Nigel farage milkshake incident it look it of course is not an exact science head but as we see these pictures of the immediate aftermath of the shooting with Donald Trump being uh bundled into a vehicle what is fairly striking is the reaction of the crowd they seem to on mass assume that well they’re safe now the shooter has been has been uh taken out but they don’t know what else is going on I mean we’ve seen shooting incidents in the US where there’ve been more than one person responsible so when you talk about contingency plans and how to keep people safe does it look to you like they were thinking about the crowd immediately afterwards or not um I think from from their perspective they’re just looking after after their principle all their concern is the safety of Donald Trump there will be other security staff other elements within the crowd that are responsible for taking both for the welfare and looking after the crowd but the immediate close Protection Team of Mr Trump their concern is the safety of Mr Trump nothing else and and again just coming back to the immediate response of the security services there I mean it didn’t take too long for him to be surrounded by his team and they it was we’ve seen with American presid presidents and former presidents previously they are trained to then put themselves In Harm’s Way yeah for sure take their principle just describe that yeah so again it’s well all sides after this all sides there’s absolutely no doubt everyone will be reviewing the footage and everyone will will be looking and saying right we could have done this better we could have reacted quicker here we should have done this we should have done that and again having been in these situations and having come under Fire myself nothing actually prepares you for what will actually happen on the day of the race um and again you can practice practice practice as as we did when you know during my time in the Marines but until you’ve actually got those bullets coming in your way you you don’t know how you’re going to react and you don’t know how the other team are going to react this is when the training the preparation The Continuous drills start to start to in and again you can never ever react and plan for every eventuality so so yeah it it is difficult and I do think the the team there the protection team did well they they they they got him down they they got him safe initially and then they bundled him out so all in all I think they they did a reasonable job Ed really appreciate you uh joining us this morning here on Sky News talk about that as Ed Hill Global security specialist and former Royal Marines Commander you’re watching Sky News today still to come will it come home for England tonight Jackie’s in Berlin for us and she’ll be looking ahead to the Euro’s [Music] final so we’re very excited um at square cut the production company I formed when I left Sky uh because we think that America’s really going to EMB race Cricket they did very well in the recent World Cup they made it through to the final eight they beat Pakistan um and they’re are coming force and going on at the moment is a tournament called the mlc Major League cricket it’s a league made up of the likes of San Francisco Washington um Seattle six clubs play each other then there’s a a knockout round and by the end of July there’s a the World Cup and we’re producing a podcast us Cricket daily available on Amazon um and uh Spotify and apple Tik Tok Instagram where you can look back on the day’s play and we look forward to the next day’s game cricket is coming to America in a big way do they understand it yeah they do in fact CU When you’re at you’re in and when you’re out America played Canada in September 1844 30 years before England played Australia oh okay America was ahead of the game as they are in in so many ways they give them a run for the money on a good day they’ve got some good players and the big thing about the mlc the Major League cricket tournament is the players come from all over the world they’ve got the likes of Pat Cummings the Australian Captain playing at the moment uh for the San Francisco team um Ponting is the coach of the Washington team they’re attracting good players it’s going to be an exciting League T20 is the fastest growing format of cricket around the globe I’m Dominic wns International Affairs editor covering a world that seems to be unraveling War unrest Revolution it’s our e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e is dominating things this morning we’ll continue to do so and we’ve had a reaction from K starma as you’d expect condemning what happened to to Donald Trump but this is going to this is going to run and run this one it really is absolutely right M and I think it’s one of these moments that you that you live through where you think this is historic this is something people are going to be talking about uh for the rest of time in in politics and even wider and further a field uh there isn’t anybody on Earth who doesn’t know who Donald Trump is regardless of our political views about them obviously political violence can’t be tolerated in any way shape or form so it is shocking um but it just shows I think how heightened these tensions are in America everybody I know in America uh is extremely concerned about the situation I’ve heard Democrat Strat just describe it as a a powder keg at the moment and of course the the real danger of that is as we approach this presidential campaign and eventually the the general election date that things are going to become even more heightened and events like this could be the spark to ignite the whole thing it’s really really concerning times Henry what do you think yeah it’s absolutely extraordinary uh not unpr ented in American political history of course during the the’ 60s and 7s there were um a raft of bombings at one period and and targeted assassinations at another but nonetheless just you you always think that you’ve moved past it right I think you can take Democratic stability for granted and this is a reminder that we’re never quite as far away from history as we might like to think it’s going to be fascinating to see how it plays out in terms of the impact on the general election over there but it is a horrifying precedent and we just have hope that given the the vast proliferation of firearms in the United States more people don’t take the shoo’s example look we’re not immune to political violence here in the UK of course people’s minds will instantly go to uh the killings of David Amos and Joe Cox in recent years what I’m interested to talk to you both about is the unified response here to what happened versus what is already a partisan response in the state so James let’s just dwell on first and foremost the response here to those those actions that uh that led to the deaths of those MPS because it was unified for the most part yeah you’re absolutely right um I mean I don’t think it’s surprising that everyone is horrified by the concept of any kind of assassination attempt at all um I think we are lucky here I mean I will always come on and critique British politics and critique all the ugly parts of it but I think we are immensely lucky here not just for our situation with gun laws and and lack of guns and firearms and availability of them in this country but also our general attitude towards that and and the lack of um tension that there is lying under the surface of British politics but as you rightly point out we saw that come to a head and we’re not immune to it because you know when Joe Cox lost her life obviously before David Amos uh was killed as well we saw that was a result of language inflammatory language and really dangerous rhetoric that was being spouted at the time by elements of the far right and of course it was a political murder um so we’re not immune to that here and really the risk is that any kind of inflammatory language or rhetoric can cause people who are in this situation who are likely to act on these things to take action so I’m I’m pleased to see a unified response in Britain from our kind of political establishment but um I’m not surprised yeah let’s just pick up on that theme Henry in terms of the response here versus the response in America we’ve SE look we’ve seen heated debates between the leaders of the two main parties here in recent weeks but there are handshakes afterwards there seems to be well certainly in rishy Sak’s exit speech from Downing Street and karma’s arrival there seemed to be some humility some understanding some appreciation for what the other has to do that people will be well it would be good if people noticed that as opposed to uh some of the rhetoric that causes problems yeah I think it’s the classic press problem which is that the journalists who cover politics know that behind the scenes most politicians are perfectly decent to each other there are lots of friends across the aisle but naturally it’s the fights it’s the disagreements that make the stories that generate the coverage so it is I think a a challenge for journalism to cover what needs to be covered but to try and do so without doing an injustice to British politics now I write lots of scathing things about British Politics as anyone who who reads conservative home will know but it is important America really is a contrast because it’s Mo it is it’s so much about political and National culture because you know gun laws are important but Northern Ireland Northern Ireland oh I think we’ve lost you there Henry for a second sorry we’ll try and get uh we’ll try and get Henry back but uh look James if I come back to you let let’s shift Focus then to the the US response and despite that unified and Universal condemnation from I mean from Obama from Clinton to prominent Democrat uh presidents already there’s the finger pointing it seemed to start with JD Vance the Ohio senator who seems to be the most likely person to be running mate for Donald Trump and then others are picking up on that blaming the left blaming the Democrats and the Democrats respond by pulling their advertising it it seems that it’s n and impossible for people to not to have some sort of polarized reaction to this yeah of course I I don’t know how you even get beyond that mat now because they’re at such a level where they’re at each other’s throats and I mean I was shocked I mean I I was watching the coverage last night on sky as obviously you’d imagine I would no other provider of course I would watch uh but you saw on those interviews uh following up um in the in the kind of immediate hours after the event uh there were there were representatives of of various movements for Trump and supporters of trump and I think there was one of the students for Trump Advocates and he was he was cut off midair because he started um using profanity aimed at the Democrats and this was immediately and of course this is an emotional you can imagine having an emotional response to an assassination attempt that’s understandable but it’s the fact that this seems to have been jumped on immediately as an attempt to use it politically to their advantage now of course it’s going to be used politically Donald Trump’s Advantage anyway I mean the photographs are quite incredible when you see him in front of the American flag with blood trickling down his face with his fist in the air I mean that’s going to be lapped up by Republican voters um and it will be used to drive them out to the polls but to hear the voices throwing blame in any particular direction especially when the shooter um I believe is a republican there’s a card carrying Republican it seems quite shocking we have a new statement from Donald Trump which I’ll read in just a second but before we get that Henry final final word to you um do you Echo those concerns from James as we head towards November and the uh the general election in the US who whoever is uh is fighting uh for the uh for the Democrats and Republicans yeah America is a big country much bigger than us both in terms of just geography and the vast range of different micr cultures and lifestyles in it and it is a real challenge to keep a country that big cohesive and America has been failing and it’s a real contrast you know I’m a conservative I don’t think a labor government is a threat to the country increasingly American voters a section of American voters on either side genuinely don’t think that the other side is part of the democratic process that is extraordinarily running and whoever wins has to try and bridge that divide Henry James appreciate you joining me uh this lunchtime uh thanks very much indeed as I mentioned there Donald Trump has put out a new statement just now on Truth social it says thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers yesterday as it was God Alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening we will fear not but instead remain resilient in our faith and defiant in the face of wickedness our love goes out to the other victims and their families we pray for the recovery of those who were wounded and hold in our hearts the memory of the citizen who was so horribly killed in this moment it is more important than ever that we stand United and show our true character As Americans remaining strong and determined and not allowing evil to win I truly love our country and love you all and look forward to speaking to our great nation this week from Wisconsin referring there to the uh Republican uh Congress that is uh due to take place this week in Milwaukee you’re watching Sky News Today coming up England expects we’ll return to Berlin ahead of tonight’s Euro’s final as well as speaking to footballing e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e New Jersey last night he has Bedminster uh golf and country club nearby of course we’ll see if he makes a statement publicly in person he has met in the past uh half hour made a new posting on Truth social his social media site I’ll read that to you um he says this thank you to everyone for their thoughts and prayers yesterday as it was God Alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening we will fear not but instead remain resilient in our faith and defiant in the face of wickedness our love goes out to the other victims and their families we pray for the recovery of those who are wounded and hold in our hearts the me memory of the citizen who was so horribly killed in this moment it is more important than ever that we stand United and show our true character As Americans remaining strong and determined and not allowing evil to win I truly love her country he says and love you all and look forward to speaking to our great nation this week from Wisconsin he signs that with a A Prayer emoji and DJ T Wisconsin of course is where the Republic National Convention will take place that has been in his diary uh for some considerable time he had been due to go there tomorrow spend several days um it’s the big Gathering of Republicans at which he will be anointed as their nominee so he’s saying that is due uh to proceed and as I say JD Vance is among those hot tips to be made as his vice presidential pick although there are others in the frame that will be or that had been due to be the big head headline coming from the RNC I suppose that’s been overtaken by very dark events events that are the subject of course of uh an ongoing investigation by the FBI Secret Service and others they’re saying this will take several months looking into the individual and how that individual Thomas Matthew KRS was able to get so close to Donald Trump uh in a situation where security would have been and should have been uh as tight as it needs to get for a presidential candidate and a former president clearly something badly went wrong last night being looked into by those who protect are charged with the protection of Donald Trump James thanks very much indeed well in the immediate aftermath of the incident the crowd was dispersing we heard from an eyewitness who was three rows back from the stage where Donald Trump was speaking at the time shots came from my left 50 ft from my left I’d say uh six or eight shots it sounded like firecrackers it wasn’t a a a heavy heavy weapon it was a uh Small Arms fire and um we all hit the ground uh people on the p on the bleachers scattered uh sadly I’m hearing there were two civilians that were hit and I’m hearing that it was not well so uh I don’t know of their condition but it’s from what I understand it’s not good president Trump exited the stage blood coming from his right ear as he was pping his fist of the air so the Pres former president’s fine and from what we’ve been told as well former president Trump is fine to his Rea to your reaction to that news overall he is f he he’s president Trump this is what it does uh like we all saw it and U I’m standing like an idiot I’m I’m I’m in belief that he’s fine and overall the fact that this has even happened at all I mean it’s it’s only be hate to say it’s historic but it’s terrible this human nature this is what we do uh I don’t want to go political on this but I believe in my opinion much of it comes from the left but um that hatred that has developed and taken over this uh campaign so it’s what it is it’s it’s a shame and the fact that basically it just happened all of a sudden everyone hit the ground kind of what was going through your mind in that moment panic panic yes we all we hit the dirt and uh I saw the Pennsylvania State Police with the suspect and they guided him out appropriately women were crying around me screaming it was it was it was chaotic and something like this happened in that what supposed to be a peaceful event oh yeah was definitely not PE your thoughts it I going to say president Trump was probably and I’m pretty sure it’s trying to get out I still see the maybe to minutes into his speech three and this the shots arose then again we had to come in the mag site a mag magnetic detector it was fully secured by Secret Service one per entrance and uh they did a good Shakedown they shook us all down the former US ambassador to the UN Kip Tom was just yards away from the stage when the gunshots were fired he spoke to NBC News well I was just with the president a few moments earlier before he came on stage and everything seemed like a normal day uh but when he walked down at Red Carpet and and walked up to the podium uh and after he spoke for about 10 minutes I was sitting in the front row at the end of the runway but uh all a sudden these shots broke out and I think there was people that actually thought it was possibly fireworks but I’ve seen the gunm smoke and obviously uh there was a person about 15t behind me that was hit I think severely wounded at least at the least uh but uh nonetheless uh the crowd stayed pretty calm for the most part and uh but you know it sounded like there was six seven shots to start with and then it seemed like there was a little pause and then we heard a different caliber gun uh fired which I assume is probably the Secret Service but uh then I thought I heard another couple rounds come off but it felt like it was behind me but I it could have been the echo did you hear the did did did President Trump say anything no he was just giving a the typical r speech uh that he typically does everywhere you know and trying to encourage voters to get out and vote and talking about his plan for America but but but as the as the shots rang out did you hear did he cry out uh did someone tell him to get down or was that instinctive yeah we heard that we heard everybody say get down but I think he was already going down um that’s when everybody thought at first maybe he had been hit uh more severely than he was I mean it’s already severe and let’s face it it hit his ear it could have been a little bit closer it could have been disastrous but uh uh when he went down to the ground then he got up he put his fist up in the air and or his hand up in the air so we knew he was okay there are U presumably at least it appears to be a lot of people in that Crowd by now you have heard that one spectator was killed another’s critically wounded um has it settled in of of of how close a brush everybody in that Arena or setting came tonight yeah you know there was a lot is interesting listening to the people as they Departed the the scene and you know what was going through my mind and of course being a little older than many of those that were there but uh I was recalling the Kennedy assassinations and some of the other attempts that were made during my lifetime and I was recalling those and thinking about those and then moving forward to where we’re at today and this is we still have a problem with this so um it’s shocking uh but most people uh are pretty upset there’s no question about it well following his release from hospital Donald Trump made his way back to Bedminster these uh images came in during the night and they show Mr Trump disembarking his plane after landing in New Jersey just a few hours after the shooting he also took to a truth social to uh issue a statement in the hours following the event politicians and world leaders were quick to issue their condemnation Sky International Affairs editor covering a world that seems to be unraveling War unrest Revolution it’s our job to try to make sense of it all [Music] welcome back to Berlin where we’re outside the Olympic Stadium excitement really building ahead of England’s huge Euros final tonight against Spain some England fans have already been Gathering outside here at the Olympic Stadium which will be center of town at the Brandenburg gate where hundreds of fans have been Gathering and and Sh on so many different stories of people who just decided at the last minute that they just had to be here just in case this was the moment where England finally lift a trophy for the first time in 58 years that’s exactly right Jackie it’s been a fascinating 24 hours meeting people who’ve been Gathering here get going down to the Brandenburg gate to get pictures we’ve met fans who’ve cycled from Amsterdam spent six days on their bikes not even knowing at the time when they began that Journey if england would get to the final others who as soon as uh that final whistle went from the semifinal they went online uh managed to get tickets jumped in camper vans we’ve met other people who’ve uh have that debate because you know if you thought things would polarize Before You Ain’t Seen Nothing [Music] Yet e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e since wrote on x violence has no place in America especially in our political process Hillary and I are thankful that President Trump is safe heartbroken for all those affected by the attack meanwhile here prime minister sakir stama released the following statement I am appalled by the shocking scenes at president Trump’s rally and we send him and his family our best wishes political violence in any form has no place in our societies and my thoughts are with all the victims of this attack let’s takeing live now to our International Affairs editor Dominic wag horn and Dominic clearly widespread condemnation around the world and all eyes now of course um on President Trump um as he responds to this and President Biden who made a late night uh uh emergency addressed to the nation yes we’ve we’ve yet toar he from Donald Trump in terms of um being on camera and speaking but we’ve heard from him in terms of what he’s put on Truth social I mean it is a huge moment a moment that that will clearly help to Define not just this election uh but also the state of politics um in America as we’re hearing from those world leaders there that you were reading out their responses to this a lot of leaders are kind of drawing parallels with with concerns about political violence the state of polarized politics not just in America but in their own countries as well so it’s I think it’s a moment for for um some very somber reflection on the state of politics outside of America but also particularly in America of course and it’s obviously a huge moment in terms of defining what happens to Donald Trump uh and you know he’s a man who’s been through extraordinary moments uh throughout his life uh an extraordinary life but this is arguably the most important uh moment that very nearly claimed uh his life and I think it’s very important to see how that he response but also the other politicians we’ve been hearing from as you were quoting there um and James was was quoting those of his acolytes his supporters who’ be more um aggressive pointed the finger of blame directly uh at the Democrats uh saying that they’re responsible for the kind of climate that has led to this attempted assassination very contentious controversial claims there but Donald Trump himself uh in his words or the words that were written for him possibly on Truth social striking more consiliary uh a more sort of measured tone uh and none of the ranker that we’re more used to with uh Donald Trump from his first term in office um only two words in capitals for instance uh those words are fear not and several references to God saying it was God Alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening we will fear not but instead remain resilient in our faith and defiant in the face of wickedness and I think that’s reflecting a couple of things one is of course that Evangelical Christians are very much part of his his base uh he is seen by many Christians as as sent by God to save and promote their cause and they will see the fact that he came so close but his life was saved uh last night it seems just by a turn of the head they will see that as divine intervention but I think it’s also a reflection of the fact that he is aware uh that the voters who will swing this either way won’t be those hardcore supporters they will be people who possibly uh will be worried about a return to the madness the shenanigans the craziness of the first uh his first campaign for office and his first four years uh in office would be worried about fears of political uh violence he was the victim this time around but I think his fear and his campaigns maybe that this reminds them of what the country’s been through particularly that assault on Capitol Hill uh on janary the six that many people blame on on Donald Trump he’s been very disciplined so far through this this campaign so I think it’s it’ll be interesting to see how this plays in the minds of those crucial swing voters will they be encouraged by his Defiance the fact that he stood there looked strong holding up his clenched fist or will it will it be a worrying reminder for them of the dangers of polarization and division uh in America should he return to the White House and of course also really crucially is what will this do to the mind of the candidate himself uh how will he be affected by this will he lose his composure will he become less disciplined will he become more emotional um because of what’s just happened to him and also will he be able to campaign as he has done so effectively because these huge rallies that uh this was one of many were thousands sometimes tens tens of thousands of people come to really are the lifeblood of his the way he operates and the way he campaigns is he going to be deterred by what’s happened or will he carry on as defiantly as he looks like he’s going to in those extraordinary pictures on the uh the podium there moments after the attempted assassination Dominic thank you well in the immediate aftermath of the incident as the crowd were dispersed we heard from an eyewitness who was three rows back from the stage where Donald Trump was speaking shots came from my left 50 ft from my left I’d say uh six or eight shots list it sounded like firecrackers it wasn’t a a a heavy heavy weapon it was a uh Small Arms fire and um we all hit the ground uh people on the p on the bleachers scattered uh sadly I’m hearing there were two civilians that were hit and I’m hearing that it was not well so uh I don’t know of their condition but it’s from when I understand it’s not good president Trump exited the stage blood coming from his right ear as he was pping his fist to the air so the Pres former president’s fine and from what we’ve been told as well former president Trump is fine to his Rea to your reaction to that news overall he is f he he’s president Trump this is what he does uh like we all saw it and U I’m standing like an idiot I’m I’m I’m in belief that he’s fine and overall the fact that this even happened at all I mean it’s it’s only hate to say it’s historic it’s terrible this this is human nature this is what we do uh I don’t want to go political on this but I believe in my opinion much of it comes from the left but um the hatred that has developed and taken over this uh campaign so it’s what it is it’s a shame and the fact that basically it just happened all of a sudden everyone hit the ground kind of what was going through your mind in that moment panic Panic yes we all we hit the dirt and uh I saw the Pennsylvania State Police with the suspect and they guided him out appropriately women were crying around me screaming it was it was it was chaotic and something like this happened in that was supposed to be a peaceful event oh it was definitely not peaceful your thoughts about it I going to say president Trump was probably and I’m pretty sure ha trying to get out I still see the maybe two minutes into his speech three and this the shots arose then again we had to come through in the mag site a MAG magntic detector it was fully secured by Secret Service one per entrance and uh they did a good Shakedown they shook us all down we have some more information coming into us here at Sky News on on the type of weapon used by the uh shooter and according to three senior US law enforcement officials um they say the person who fired at former president Trump in Pennsylvania used a semi-automatic rifle based on what was found at the scene so that’s according to three separate senior US law enforcement officials who are speaking to our sister station NBC of course we don’t have um that independently verified or confirmed by the investigators and this video uh that’s come into to us um is of Witnesses on the ground who seemingly spotted the shooter you can just see him there um when the camera goes down it’s mobile phone footage on top of the building so three separate senior US law enforcement officials are saying that the shooter used a semi-automatic rifle well a former US ambassador to the UN Kip Tom was just yards away from the stage when the gunshots were fired he spoke to NBC well I was just with the president a few moments earlier before he came on stage and everything seemed like a normal day uh but when he walked down at Red Carpet and walked up to the podium uh and after he spoke for about 10 minutes I was sitting in the front row at the end of the runway but uh all of a sudden these shots broke out and I think there was people that actually thought it was possibly fireworks but I seen the gun smoke and obviously uh there was a person about 15t behind me that was hit I think severely wounded at least at the least uh but uh nonetheless uh the crowd stayed pretty calm for the most part and uh but you know it sounded like there was six seven shots to start with and then it seemed like there was a little pause and then we heard a different caliber gun uh fired which I assume is probably the Secret Service but uh then I thought I heard another couple rounds come off but it felt like it was behind me but I it could have been the echo did you hear the did did President Trump say anything no he was just giving a the typical rally speech uh that he typically does everywhere you know and trying to encourage voters to get out and vote and talking about his plan for America but but but as the as the shots rang out did you hear did he cry out uh did someone tell him to get down or was that instinctive yeah we heard that we heard everybody say down but I think he was already going down um that’s when everybody thought at first maybe he had been hit uh more severely than he was I mean it’s already severe and let’s face it it hit his ear could have been a little bit closer it could have been disastrous but uh uh when he went down to the ground then he got up he put his fist up in the air and or his hand up in the air so we knew he was okay there are U presumably at least it appears to be a lot of people in that Crowd by now you have heard that one one spectator was killed another critically wounded um has it settled in of of of how close a brush everybody in that Arena or setting came tonight yeah you know there was a lot is interesting listening to the people as they Departed the the scene and you know what was going through my mind and of course being a little older than many of those that were there but uh I was recalling the Kennedy assassinations and some of the other attempts that were made during my lifetime and I was recalling those and thinking about those and then moving forward to where we’re at today and this is we still have a problem with this so um it’s shocking uh but e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e politics stand today right I mean this is obviously such a shock to everyone um what we saw last night you almost couldn’t believe it just watching your TV screen and there are a couple of different investigations that are going to be going on right now one is obviously the Secret Service looking into just procedurally you know how this was allowed to happen especially since we’ve seen some videos that appeared to show some people actually glimpsing the shooter before the the Secret Service did and before he fired those shots so the secret service is going to be looking into that and the FBI separately is now going to be looking into the motives of the shooter you know why did he do this what was he thinking what were his motives and we don’t know much about that now but what we do know is a couple of things one is obviously this question of gun control in the US how was this 20-year-old man able to get his hands on a on an automatic weapon uh an assault rifle and use it to Target a former president and the other of course is the incredibly divisive political rhetoric that we’ve seen in the US for years now and questioning you know how much did that political rhetoric and that divisiveness lead us up to this moment and what are we going to do about it moving forward it’s interesting you mentioned the divisive political rhetoric uh president Trump’s supporters already pointing the finger uh almost directly at President Biden some of them um saying that he was actually in fact behind this uh attack but also saying that it was the Biden Camp’s rhetoric that led to this uh of course we also have the context of January 6th we saw president Trump’s defiant fist pump after being shot up in the ear saying fight fight fight now we don’t know what he meant by that but there is a lot of division there absolutely is a lot of division and you know these accusations that are coming out now obviously aren’t helping you know we’re pointing fingers again the the biggest lesson that we should be learning at this moment is that that kind of rhetoric has brought us to a very dark place this is one of the most important elections that you know I have certainly seen in my lifetime I think you know the world is watching to see who is elected president but also how this election continues to unfold and it’s really jarring I think when we look at some of the language that’s being used by by by people you know the the the um rhetoric that you’re referring to that people are blaming President Biden for is that he had recently said that we need to put president Trump in a bullseye um and people are taking that to mean that he was implying you know violence of course he wasn’t but we have to be really careful about our language in this really really sensitive times we have to look at how how um you know this Cowboy rhetoric in the US where people are talking about fighting and Bullseye and all of that kind of stuff and how it just really needs to be examined especially as we’re going into these last critical iCal months uh into the election yeah and a republican convention underway uh this week so um in fact we we were discussing the impact this could potentially have uh on the election campaign how these are conducted but also how people turn out to vote I was discussing it with Dominick waghorn and James Matthews on the Sky News Daily podcast so let let’s talk about what you think will happen in terms of the election campaign how this might impact both the campaign and politics in America going forwards that’s a great question and I think it’s a really important one to think about you know where do we go from here and I think the answer is it’s going to depend a lot on how Donald Trump chooses to talk about this moving forward you know as you said his initial reaction was to put up his fist and say fight fight fight um but he could choose to take it in another way at the convention he could choose to really use this moment to tone down the red to say look we have gotten to an incredibly dangerous place maybe he points a finger at himself and accepts some responsibility for the kind of rhetoric that he’s used um you know famously obviously lead leading up to the January 6th in Insurrection but certainly since then as well so it could be a really defining moment for his campaign to say look uh I certainly have been guilty of this um but we need to stop this has become dangerous I almost died now is not the time to to point fingers but the time to really reflect and use this as a as a teaching moment as a learning moment and I think that we’re GNA have to leave it there Jasmine sorry to interrupt you we’ve run out of time but we’re going to have to leave it there but um indeed president Trump has certainly appeared very differently in this campaign let’s see how he responds later Jasmine Al gal thanks very much indeed for joining us thank you so much thank you okay we’re going to turn our attention to sports now and the men’s singles final is currently underway on Center Court at Wimbledon with the Princess of Wales watching on she was met with a standing ovation as she took her seat in the roll box alongside her daughter princess Charlotte and sister pipper our roal correspondent Laura bondok is there hello from Wimbledon where the Princess of Wales her sister pipper and Princess Charlotte have all now arrived to watch the men’s singles final this is really big moment for Kate she is of course no stranger to Wimbledon she is Patron of the all England Club but ever since her cancer diagnosis earlier this year and subsequent course of treatment she has had to step down from all engagement so being here today is a really big moment for her personally we last saw her four weeks ago attending trooping the color but that was the first time she’d been back on official duties since her cancer announcement was made so this her second official engagement and her first solo engagement Prince William heading to watch the football in Germany later it is a big personal moment for Kate though she is a huge tennis fan it’ll be a big moment for Royal fans as well who have missed seeing her out and about so much remember just before trooping Kate issued that really personal statement saying that although her treatment was going well like anyone undergoing chemotherapy she has good days and bad days but this surely one of those good days as she takes a seat and and watches the match it is worth pointing out though that the last time the two men played in this final the same Men last year the match went on for 4 hours and 42 minutes and although everyone here including the princess is of course a huge tennis fan I reckon there’ll be a few football fans who perhaps are hoping this match won’t last quite so long so they can all get home and watch the other big sporting final taking place later today and that will be the Euro fever that’s gripped the nation and Sky Fraser M has been seeing how people are marking the historic day joins us live from a family fond day at a park in lanen Shire I think it’s going to turn into a fan Zone later too crossed it’s been a bit painful so far hasn’t it the the game against the Netherlands was fantastic up until then little bit edge of the seat stuff wasn’t it yeah it’s been bit tense and some games have been a bit boring but I’m hoping for a win we don’t care if they’re boring as long as we win we don’t care how boring it is do we no definitely not let’s have a chat here Jackson young man are you looking forward to the game tonight they’re coming home it’s coming home of course it is what do you think the score is going to be uh 31 and who’s going to score the goals who are our best most uh well the Harry Kane handed the ball in the L A Harry Kane fan of course mom Kaye you’ve got your England shirt on your match fit ready for action tonight you looking forward to it or do you think it’s going to be a bit nervy I think it’ll be nervy but like I’ve said to everybody that sport to today it’s been touch and go but it’s not about what’s happened how they’ve played it’s about what happens tonight and and that’s all that matters do you have trust in Gareth I do I do it pulled it out the bag every time so far so that’s he had a fair bit of criticism hasn’t he but he’s done the job he’s got us there yet again and hopefully we’ll be bringing it home family and we’ll have some good news for a change and some to celebrate for a change oh those celebrations are going to be big though aren’t they going to be wild absolutely Wild and the one thing we don’t want to guess is the tense uh you know the tenseness of a a penalty shootout although if it does go to penalties we’re pretty good at that now I think we’ll be Ely say it goes to penalties I think pford is absolutely amazing and I think he’ll do it for us if we go to penalties fantastic Kaye Jackson Atlanta thank you so much enjoy the game tonight let’s hope it’s an England win we’ll stay here for a little while so C the atmosphere here fantastic enjoyment here at the moment great atmosphere here in alen significantly colder under a blanket of cloud you’re watching Sky News Today coming up we’ll be bringing you more on the assassination attempt on Donald Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania we’ll bring you the latest pictures and everything on the investigation stay tuned to Sky News [Music] [Music] [Music] e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e attempted assassination of Donald Trump calling for Unity in a seeming conciliatory statement there you are watching Sky News Today coming up we’ll speak to former US National Security adviser to Donald Trump John Bolton on that attempted assassination on the former president e e e e e e who saw a shooter on the roof get over here Ro get over here Ro get over here I hope he’s turning this way be careful [Music] guys okay well let’s look at what the shooting means for National Security uh in the buildup to November’s presidential election this was of course a political rally I’m joined by John Bolton a former US National Security advisor as well as the US ambassador to the UN uh uh it is extraordinary isn’t it and it’s this question that keeps coming up over and over again John Bolton how did a shooter manage to get a clear line of sight in a building right next to this open air rally and the former president well we don’t obviously know the answer to that and I’m sure it’s going to be the subject of uh of considerable attention and uh and and controversy it’s uh purely a matter of luck really I think that former president Trump uh surviv that attempt and uh so there’ll be there’ll be a lot of discussion about it but I I I can’t give you the answer I’m not sure who can at this point yeah exactly I mean the investigations are uh underway and I I suspect it will take some time before we here but in the immediate aftermath it is of course uh all concern for president Trump his safety uh you’ve worked with him uh how do you think he will react to this well I think uh he he gave a reaction that uh may may well have effectively ended the presidential campaign already by pumping his fist in the air and uh know showing that he was uh he was okay and would make it out and uh the iconic pictures that were taken of him showing his Defiance with the American flag in the background I I I think the uh the the effect on the Republican Party whose convention begins in Milwaukee tomorrow will be electric and uh his appearance uh to accept the party’s nomination uh Thursday will be even more electric and compared to the confusion and disarray in the Democratic party as I say I I’m not sure they’ll replace Biden on the now I’m not sure there’s anybody in the Democratic party who wants to step forward and say they they’ll be the nominee in these circumstances it sounds like actually you’re saying that you think uh this may have uh won president Trump the election exactly the the the impression that people had uh you could see it in the crowd reaction when when Trump was on his feet and and uh and raised his fist uh and the crowd began chanting not a partisan or political slogan but began chanting usausa I mean I think this is going to bring a lot of people who uh were not going to vote for Trump Republicans who are disillusioned Independents who were disillusioned even some Democrats uh in in into a an environment where Biden’s campaign was in deep trouble already after his debate performance the party was divided uh and and I think it’s uh uh it’s it’s the kind of event that changes the mood in the country I think now the the biggest political question is how many additional Senate and House Seats Republicans will pick up uh if Democrats stay home or if Biden loses in in more Battleground states where there are key Congressional elections as well interesting and in in terms of National Security uh a former president always has a secret service security detail with them we saw them willing to lay down their lives uh for him yesterday trying to protect him last night so so what how do you think this may well impact both security throughout the national uh through the throughout the election campaign but also in uh an America going forwards well I think uh it will certainly have a significant effect because now they’ll review every protocol they have their the Secret Service now is reviewing the arrangements for the convention in Milwaukee which is I say opens tomorrow uh I still have Secret Service protection because of Iranian efforts to assassinate me I I feel perfectly comfortable and safe don’t get me wrong uh uh because I have great faith in the Secret Service but when you come this close there’s no no doubt that uh it’ll receive a lot of scrutiny and protection levels for for the candidates I think will go up no no doubt about it so if you were if you were advising him would you say that it’s still okay to do these open rallies to continue uh uh like this in the presidential campaign look I I think that to to behave in a different fashion would be to give in to these kinds of threats and whatever whatever their source is and and let’s be clear we don’t have the slightest idea what motivated this particular shooter and he was killed in the attempt so we’re not going to hear it from him that’s for sure uh uh but but if if uh in a Democratic Society you can’t mingle with the people that’s a huge problem it just means the Secret Service and others will have to be more creative and and and more concerned in in the future okay John Bolton we’re going to leave it there thanks very much indeed for joining us with your analysis thank you uh some other news that’s coming to us this afternoon the American actress Shannon doti the star of Beverly Hills 90210 and Charmed has died at the age of 53 she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 and last year had a brain tumor removed and she revealed the disease had spread to her bones okay to the men’s singles final now which is currently underway on Center Court in Wimbledon where the princess a Welles is watching from the roll boox she was met by a standing ovation as she took her seat with her daughter princess Charlotte and her sister Pippa our Royal correspondent Laura bondock has the latest from Wimbledon hello from Wimbledon where the Princess of Wales her sister Pippa and Princess Charlotte have all now arrived to watch the men’s singles final this is a really big moment for Kate she is of course no stranger to Wimbledon she is Patron of the all Sky News Today coming up excitement bills in Berlin ahead of tonight’s Euros final between Spain and England we’ll speak to former thre line star Gary [Music] [Music] mot that has happened within severe viruses in the world I’m Alex Crawford and I’m Sky’s special correspondent based in Istanbul this is going to be the biggest party trip has ever seen that’s it it it got us then there’s a lot of action going on a lot of hits com in [Music] still we aim to be the best and the most trusted place in news clearly not had very much to eat at all a lot of them extremely thin and very frail look at her arms I can put my entire hand round this is the cocktail of drugs which the doctors at this Hospital have been giving their Corona virus patients made for people who want Clarity in an uncertain world Mother Nature is can be vicious absolutely Savage the world large as Falls now down to a trickle in places I can’t imagine how much plastic is lying at the bottom of this huge Lake who close and personal this is what makes the job so so fantastic [Music] more now on the build up to England’s big Euros final against Spain now our correspondent Lisa Dow is in starbridge visiting Forest Falcons FC a youth club near where England star Jude Bellingham grew up well we are at Forest Falcons and just down the road from here was where uh the Local Hero Jude Bellingham began his playing career so there’s are a lot of excited children playing football tonight excited about the game tonight excited about having met Bellingham a few months or so ago because in a surprise visit he came down to meet some of the kids Eli can you show me your photo there just the other way around what was it like meeting Jude bellingan what was he like he was nice yeah and James I know you met him as well didn’t you um what kind of top tips did he give you um St the keeper down in the penalty um you get the ball for outside the box have a shot and yeah Jonathan you bought your brother down didn’t you and you were shocked to see JW Bellingham down here what’s it like having someone like that as an inspiration for all of the kids it’s definitely really important e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e falls to the ground then a flurry then what appears to be one more shot and the piercing [Applause] screams it’s not clear at this point if he’s been hit how injured he might be and all this is being broadcast live on American cable news go guys here here mov get ready get ready you ready the podium microphone is still [Applause] on the Secret Service agents confirm the shooter is [Applause] down let me get my shoes let me get my shoes got you sir I got you sir let me get my shoes hold that in your head bloody so we got to move to the and then they begin to move the former president watch out it was an attempt to assassinate Donald Trump it had failed and he recognized the need for immediate Defiance he was then bundled into his vehicle and Away the still images capture this extraordinary moment for America Trump under Under Fire vulnerable defiant quickly a statement from the former president came I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound shots and immediately felt the bullet ripping through my skin much bleeding took place so I realized then what was happening the former president said and then from his political foe from President Biden a hastily arranged address to the nation we can not allow for this to be happening we cannot be like this we cannot condone this and so and I want to thank the Secret Service and all the agencies including the state agencies that have been engaged in making sure that the people who and we have more detail to come relative to other injur other people may be injured in the audience I don’t have all that detail we’ll make that available to you I may be able to come back a little later tonight but we’ll put out a statement if we don’t if I’m not able to get if it’s not convenient for you all but the bottom line is that the Trump rally was a rally that he should have been able to be conducted peacefully without any problem but the idea the idea that there’s political violence or violence in America like this is just unheard of the political reverberations from all this are hard to judge right now they cannot be underestimated but the immediate focus is the investigation the witnesses will provide important information for the FBI and they are now leading on it I was in the set of bleachers to the very far left of the podium where Donald Trump was speak president Trump was speaking um you know was there with friends I heard several gunshots um the man beside me uh suffered a gunshot wind to the Head um was instantly killed um fell to the bottom of the bleachers another woman was looked like she got hit in the forearm her hand and then at that point in time uh it was rather chaotic at that point you don’t like the guy don’t vote for him don’t kill him we love the guy we’re going to vote for him you know I mean what what what is up with this violence I mean it’s just it’s just terrible from Sky News analysis of the images from the scene here’s a picture of what happened this is the spot where Donald Trump was speaking the red zone is where the crowd was it’s thought the gunman was on this roof beyond the secure perimeter of the rally about 150 M from the former president this evening we had what we’re calling an assassin attempt against our former president Donald Trump it’s still an active crime scene as I mentioned we have a number of Agents on scene we also are working closely with other federal agencies our state partners and our local police Partners as well on the roof of an adjacent building is the weapon thought to have been used authorities say they have identified the dead gunman as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from a town an hour’s drive to the South a young man who tried to change the course of American History it will take time to process the impact of all this the consequences for America and a society already so fractured Mark Stone Sky News in Butler Pennsylvania well Donald Trump’s uh wife Melania Trump has released a lengthy statement following the shooting at the rally in Pennsylvania in the statement she says America the fabric of our gentle nation is tattered but our courage and Common Sense must Ascend and bring us back together as one a Monster who recognized my husband as an inhuman political machine attempted to ring out Donald’s passion his laughter Ingenuity love of music and inspiration the core facets of my husband’s life his Human Side were buried below the political machine let us not forget that differing opinions policy and political games are inferior to love our personal structural and life commitment until death isn’t serious risk political Concepts simple when compared to us human beings well let’s uh bring in our International Affairs at it’s Dominic quorn and and Dominic a significant statement there from the former first lady uh and wife of course to the former president Donald Trump we’ve had widespread condemnation from around the world but this is the first time we’ve heard from uh Melania Trump and significantly what I would what I would pick out is that conciliatory tone to look at Donald Trump as a human being first and a politician second yeah the man that she knows her husband to be and it’s a similarly conciliatory tone that we’re hearing from Donald Trump himself and his second pronouncement online uh since this extraordinary attack uh on Truth social he posted this day it’s quite lengthy but it’s important of report I think saying thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers yesterday today as it was God Alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening we will fear not but instead remain resilient in our faith and defiant in the face of wickedness our love goes out to the other victims and their families we pray for the recovery of those who were wounded and hold in our hearts the memory of the citizen who was so horribly killed in this moment it is more important than ever that we stand United and show our true character As Americans remaining strong and determined and not allowing evil to win I truly love our country and love you all and look forward to speaking to you speaking to our great nation this week from Wisconsin Wisconsin of course uh the state where the Republican National Convention uh will be hosted um this week where Donald Trump will give a an important speech on Thursday and and be appointed the uh nominated candidate for the Republican party that statement reads rather like a kind of preacher statement it’s it’s straight out of church isn’t it lots of references to God it’s a much more measured tone than we’ve been come become used to from Donald Trump there are only two two words in capitals sometimes he he writes all his statements in capitals and he’s really worked up the two words fear not and the message is one of I think uh you might say of a more consiliary tone and more measured almost one of of restraint um there and I think that’s it obviously the religious tone is is reflecting partly the fact that a lot of his base are Evangelical Christians but also I think a recognition uh that uh as we’ve seen throughout this campaign he wants it to be more uh disciplined more of a considered tone to the campaign aware that swing voters in the states that really count in this election uh could be worried about the return to the chaos the craziness of the first term in office for Donald Trump and I think the key question really is is that iconic image of and he stayed on the stage until he could uh clenched his fist his face um stre with blood is that going to project strength and determination and resolve to those important swing voters or will it just reinforce the impression this is this is a man around which chaos and ranker seems to swell and will that put off swing voters or will they be encouraged by the fact that he got up and as I say project try to project strength in the wake of that attack I think that’s one of the key questions the other one of course is what will it do to him psychologically will it restrict the way he campaigns uh will he be emotionally affected by it in the closing weeks and months of this election campaign Dominic good to have your analysis thank you well joining me now from from Tampa Florida is Matt Shoemaker who is a Former Intelligence officer at the defense intelligence agency um uh good afternoon to you uh we’ve talked about these so many questions that need answering surrounding uh what is uh being dubbed a security failure but what about the intelligence because uh this must have been planned for quite some time thanks very much for having me on and that’s that is certainly a great question there’s it’s still unclear at this point in terms of how quickly this rally was organized you know often times these can be a spur of the- moment thing especially the way that President Trump likes to throw these he does like a crowd so it could have been a spur of the- moment thing but it’s unclear if this was actually planned depending if it were planned this certainly would give the the shooter an opportunity to research the area now with regards to the intelligence failure about that this is all going to have been scoped out you know previously from a security perspective by the Secret Service prior to that and I think one thing that is missing in this discussion is the recognition that when it comes to these uh the way that the the Secret Service operates is that they operate in what they call the bubble they create this security apparatus of layered tiers of security the first and closest tier is as you see in the video right now the Secret Service agents that rush to the president and guard him on the ground level the second tier which branches out a little bit farther from that is usually going to consist of local law enforcement that’s simply because the Secret Service doesn’t have the manpower to to completely you know flood the area with security and then the third tier from that is when you see things like these counter snipers it’s where you see these things the use of drones and that’s when you start seeing the intelligence uh use such as cyber signals intelligence and that that matter now from my perspective this looks like this may have been a failure on the law enforcement the second tier level that is usually the the general operating level that these are going to work at and the reason why that that may have been the actual failure is because the communication between local law enforcement and Secret Service is often times delayed and in these sorts of situations time is of the essence and of course how hard is it with um you’d assume that with social media if someone was posting stuff online talking about we haven’t seen anything yet from Thomas krooks but you’d assume that if it’s out there it can be found but the sheer amount of traffic online must also create some problems and hurdles for intelligence gathering absolutely you know trying to find out what is a legitimate threat one that seems to be you know in the process of being acted upon versus you know people who are saying stupid things uh and and letting their emotions get the better of them those are all you know finding a needle in the Hast stack if you will between between the legitimate threats and those that are just uh exasperated individuals so whether or not this individual even said anything on social media more than likely when this you know previously how this these things tend to happen is that you know some comments are made to someone uh whether it be family or friends or as you mentioned on social media or they’re being a digital Trace so the FBI that has now taken over this uh investigation will certainly be looking into that as much as they can I’m going forwards do you think this uh will force uh both intelligence and security agencies in America to uh go back and address how they handled these situations or look into these situations because of course a lot changed after 1981 when Ronald Reagan was targeted uh uh by John Hinckley Jr that was a really significant moment in American political history and the Secret Service had learned from from that attack which is why we see the kind of security these days yes so and not trying to get ahead of ourselves or anything like that since since any report hasn’t been issued yet about where exactly the failures may have uh may be placed I would at least expect going forward that most likely what we’re going to end up seeing is an increased use of bulletproof glass around the podium that is uh unfortunately become a Hallmark of some uh political speeches here in America uh another thing that may be used more widely uh is the use of drones it’s unclear exactly what role drones played in this incident whether it was whether they or not they were being used at the time of the shooting or if they were simply used prior to uh the looking at the security situation um at hand those are two things that I would imagine that would just happen uh off the bat anything further whether it be Communications between local law enforcement and and Secret Service that will certainly be investigated if that was the the cause of failure or the point of failure um and and we’ll see and we’ll go from there yeah Matt shoe maker a lot more no doubts to discuss in the coming weeks and months in this seismic moment in American political history thanks very much indeed for speaking to us on Sky News thank you very much you’re watching Sky News Today coming up excitement bills in Berlin e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e I’m surprised that you don’t feel like you’re getting ahead of yourselves because we don’t know this guy’s motive you you’re suggesting that he was motivated by some sort of political ideology perhaps it’s it’s not political in motivation at all I mean maybe this is a press conference you might want to have in a couple days yeah I listen we have a couple of months to we have a few months to the uh to an election that will determine who the leader of the Free World is uh as I said I think it’s too late to ask questions obviously uh I think it’s too late to do what President Obama suggested last night that we need to do and I think we should listen to him which is we need to get rid of this hate uh rhetoric the president former president Obama believes that that is what has contributed to this obviously or would said that every former president last night said this kind of hatred they said violence has no place uh in politics nor does hatred nor does the demonization of your political opponent nor does the weaponization of the full force of the government against your political opponent they’ve arrested him they’ve indicted him they’ve tried him they’ve convicted him so I don’t think it’s too early to ask those questions and as I said I think it’s uh I think we’re allowed to use our common sense to say or to ask the questions hey is there something that’s happening in society that contributes to to this type of thing and we do know his motive it’s obvious to anyone kill I was a former prosecutor in man District Attorney’s Office his motive was clear he tried to assassinate the candidate the leading candidate for the presidency of the United States now I think it’s appropriate that we asked what led that derange demonic human being to that point and every former president of John Hanley yeah did not get a political answer every former president if you don’t believe me listen to President Clinton President Bush President Obama listen to them listen to President Biden last night who said we’ve got to get the hate out they must be saying that because they believe the hate contributed to what happened last night I’m wondering what you guys are uh thinking about the contribution that Donald Trump has has played in this I mean none of you spoken about that what are you suggesting that he that hate that he wanted to get shot he says all the things he says with his rallies you guys don’t hear that all the time okay so I just want to be very clear okay violence has no place in the political process in this nation no I understand that but you’re saying that the rhetoric and things that are being said by you know any anybody else but what about what it is that Donald Trump says do you guys ever are talk about that at all y it is bizarre that you would say that the person who got shot in the head his rhetoric was responsible as though there’s some justification for bad things being said to shoot someone the leading candidate for politics in the head that is bizarre but to to the last point that you made 2011 you had Gabby gords who got shot tragically and the media and I’m not sure if Channel 7 did or any other network but the media by and large put together a fact pattern that a woman from Alaska who had a pack in Washington who some staffer put Bull’s eyes on a map saying these are the districts we’re going to Target was responsible the leading newspaper of record the New York Times editorialized it was just in court right so to to to imply that there’s no ret rhetorical cause and effect that motivates crazy people to do things is absolutely bizarre I woke up this morning to the Staten Island in advance with a bizarre headline today 6 a.m. we got to get those Trump magga thugs or gangsters that was today’s newspaper of the Staten Island Advance I don’t even have a subscription to cancel anymore it’s just bizarre you have Keith obman right not just anyone someone who is the media saying he had hope for the Trump assassination you had other people called Trump Hitler saying he’s a threat to democracy I’ve never heard anyone just go back at any of these representatives and say how is he a threat to democracy because you don’t like the things that he’s going to do with the Constitutional power he gets that’s not a threat to democracy that is the result of democracy if you don’t like what’s happening run for office support candidates you like and that’s that but this rhetoric that we have heard over and over over and over again equating someone with a mass murderer to think that that didn’t contribute to this is bizarre the guy is also by the way a registered Republican do you guys know about that so I don’t know who you are so I just like to before I answer your question what’s your name Daniel Daniel from where from NBC and Sir where are you from sorry NJ bur with ch okay so you want to talk about the guy the fact the guy may be in Republican or at least registered the Republican party which anybody in this country is free to do I didn’t ask that question that’s fine but you did suggest and you’re talking about rhetoric so are you saying that it’s not okay for us to denounce violence are you saying that we should wait until we know what’s going on everybody on the planet knows that you have MSNBC The New York Times Rachel mat The View you have Maxine Waters oh let’s get in their faces you have this going on every day and you dare to say to us shouldn’t we wait no we shouldn’t wait right now is the time to say that we need to cool things down we don’t have to wait for your permission we don’t have to wait for anybody’s permission regardless of this Mo of this this young man’s motivation what he did was wrong he tried to assassinate a president of the United States and you stand there and say well maybe I should wait maybe it’s okay are you saying the fact that he was registered to the Republican Party absolves him of everything absolves all of the media of all of the coverage they’ve done for the last 10 years absolutely not that is a pathetic question and I think you guys should be ashamed I mean I don’t know you personally but it’s pathetic that you would even suggest that he’s a republican therefore everything is okay when you have social media you have control of the media you talk about the laptop you talk about Russian collusion all of that that we have to forget cuz maybe this guy was registered or is registered to the Republican party you should be ashamed of yourselves I don’t think what he saying is that I think what they’re saying is when when he says they did it yeah they did it they did it they they don’t know that what I’m say knows who he is it’s what I’m saying listen I take all these Dei classes right and in the Dei classes they say that it’s not what the question is it’s how the person who perceives the question takes it that’s how I take it you may very well you don’t know what he is listen and listen I’ll say it one more time I’ll be bipartisan President Obama President Obama President Clinton President George W Bush President Biden last night said they did it they said the people the hate in the process did it every single one of them said that so you don’t have to listen to us but we’re not going to stand here and told that we’re not seeing what we’re seeing which is what we’ve been told by the left for years now the left suggested January 6th was something it wasn’t and was as a result of people spewing hate that’s what you all said and continue to say and when we say when a deranged demonic shooter decides to take out the person who you say is going to destroy America we can’t say that maybe you saying that he’s going to destroy America has something to do with it it’s Common Sense we’re going to continue to fight for what’s right we’re going to continue to take down this curtain of lies and let the people know that it does matter thank you just that just and just to end on this note it doesn’t matter who he is it doesn’t matter why he did it the fact is that he tried to kill President Trump that’s it and we are here to condemn those actions to say violence is not the answer violence should not breed more violence and you want to do something about it you don’t like the the direction our country is headed make your voice heard in the political process and then the ballot box and that’s the reason why we’re here today what would you say to Staten Islanders who may fear for their lives going to a political rally in the future that’s a that’s a great question actually S Advance yeah okay great question we cannot let this incid incident stop us from participating in the political process if anything it should motivate us to participate more in the political process I assure you that on Staten Island we have an adequate police we support the police department we have have more than enough police officers that live on Staten Island off-duty police officers more than enough people that have carry licenses to carry firearms because they are either retired law enforcement Personnel or active law enforce law enforcement Personnel any political events that we have on Staten Island I assure you the Republican party will take safety as a top priority and any people that would like to come in will be uh secure great question any other questions yeah yes Fernando Fox Five nice meet um what what would you guys say about the actual problem where where many families throughout the United States has suffered deaths in terms of gun control should there be more gun control uh in terms of letting a 20- yearold go in buy a gun and pretty much and take care of an event like this that’s a good question Fernando gun control we don’t know right now this an ongoing investigation so we don’t know what type of gun was used at least I don’t know we don’t know if it was legally bought we don’t know if it was bought off the street I was a prosecutor for almost a decade okay our streets are filled with illegal guns not once did I ever prosecute a crime where the person was a legal gun owner they are all illegal guns okay so I don’t want to answer at this point we don’t know enough on this investigation to for me to answer answer that question to you but there are a lot more illegal guns on the streets of New York City and that’s what the criminals are utilizing to commit crimes including homicides and robberies and those are the guns we need to get off the street any other questions one more men a question of political rhetoric on the left is there any is there any indication I mean that rhetoric on both sides sort of the whole thing up we are here as a St Republican party to condemn the actions that occurred yesterday we need Cool com cool heads to Prevail okay and we are saying that if people are upset as to what happened yesterday they need to get involved in the process and that that’s what we’re saying any other questions okay thank you so much they so impartial [Applause] what state state e e e e e e e e e get over here what doing I hope he’s turning this way be careful guys [Music] this photograph taken by New York Times photographer captured an image of one of the bullets the thin horizontal line there showing its flight as it was captured on film our us correspondent Mark Stone takes us through how the attack unfolded Donald Trump had been at the podium for just a few minutes in Butler Pennsylvania the latest of so many campaign rallies this one familiar like all the others and then it happened take a look what happened watch and listen again take a look what happened two pops Trump grabs his ear then falls to the ground then a flurry then what appears to be one more shot and the piercing [Applause] screams it’s not clear at this point if he’s been hit how injured he might be and all this is being broadcast live on American cable news guys here mov get ready get ready we ready the podium microphone is still [Laughter] [Applause] on the Secret Service agents confirm the shooter is down we’re [Applause] clear come let me get my shoes let me get my shoes got you sir I got you sir let me get my shes hold that in your head bloody so we got to move to and then they begin to move the former president watch out it was an attempt to assassinate Donald Trump it had failed and he recognized the need for immediate Defiance he was then bundled into his vehicle and Away the still images capture this extraordinary moment for America Trump Under Fire vulnerable defiant quickly a statement from the former president came I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound shots and immediately felt the bullet ripping through my skin much bleeding took place so I realized then what was happening the former president said and then from his political foe from President Biden a hastily arranged address to the nation there’s no place in America for this kind of violence it’s sick it’s sick it’s one of the reasons why we have to unite this country we cannot allow for this to be happening we cannot be like this we cannot condone this and so and I want to thank the Secret Service and all the agency including the state agencies that have engaged in making sure that the people who and we have more detail to come relative to other injur other people maybe injured in the audience I don’t have all that detail will’ll make that available to you I may be able to come back a little later tonight but we’ll put out a statement if we don’t if I’m not able to give we if it’s not convenient for you all but the bottom line is that the Trump rally was a rally that he should have been able to be conducted peacefully without any problem but the idea the idea that there’s political violence or violence in America like this is just unheard of the political reverberations from all this are hard to judge right now they cannot be underestimated but the immediate focus is the investigation the witnesses will provide important information for the FBI and they are now leading on it I was in the set of bleachers to the very far left of the podium where Donald Trump was speak president Trump was speaking um you know was there with friends I heard several gunshots um the man beside me uh suffered a gunshot wind to the Head um was instantly killed um fell to the bottom of the police teachers another woman was looked like she got hit in the forearm her hand and then at that point in time uh it was rather chaotic at that point you don’t like the guy don’t vote for him don’t kill him we love the guy we’re going to vote for him you know I mean what what what is up with his violence I mean it’s just it’s just terrible from Sky News analysis of the images from the scene here’s a picture of what happened this is the spot where Donald Trump was speaking the red zone is where the crowd was it’s thought the gunman was on this roof beyond the secure perimeter of the rally about 150 M from the former president this evening we had what we’re calling an assassination attempt against our former president Donald Trump it’s still an active crime scene as I mentioned we have a number of Agents on scene we also are working closely with other federal agencies our state partners and our local police Partners as well authorities say they have identified the dead gunman is 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Kooks from a town an hour’s drive to the South a young man who tried to change the course of American history as the enormity of all this sinks in so too does the reality of just how close a call this was how close a former president was to assassination on the roof of an adjacent building the weapon thought to have been used a semi-automatic rifle bought legally by the gunman’s father it will take time to process the impact of all this the consequences for America and a society already so fractured Mark Stone Sky News in Butler Pennsylvania well Donald Trump’s wife Melania Trump has released a lengthy statement following the shooting at that rally in Pennsylvania in the statement she says America the fabric of our gentle nation is tattered but our courage and Common Sense must descend and bring us back together as one a Monster who recognized my husband as an inhuman political machine attempted to ring out Donald’s passion his laughter Ingenuity love of music and inspiration the core facets of my husband’s life his Human Side were buried below the political machine let us not forget that differing opinions policy and political games are inferior to love our personal structural and life commitment until death is at serious risk political Concepts simple when compared to us human beings well Mar stone is at the site at Butler in Pennsylvania where the Donald where Donald Trump was shot shortly after beginning his rally speech last night James Matthews is in New Jersey where the former president is still recovering from the ordeal let’s go to mark first mark this is a seismic moment in American history and so many questions about how this was able to happen where is the investigation it’s in its very early stages I think um that is clear uh this morning Jonathan it’s just gone quarter past midday uh here in Butler Pennsylvania and the field that is beyond that garage behind me uh will now forever be be the place where a former president was almost assassinated I think it will take a long time uh for all of this to sink in certainly for those people who were here at the rally yesterday uh but for Americans across the country to are quite extraordinary moment I think there are two strands to the story now there is the the investigation and within that there are many strands and then there’s the politics how all this uh impacts the election how it impacts Society uh in the United States the investigation uh is as I say in its early stages the FBI are still in what is now a wider Cordon uh than it was last night last night we were able to get much closer uh to the uh the point where Donald Trump was speaking the point where he was shot at just after quarter past 6 last tonight now The Cordon is wider and we’re told this FBI officials are combing the area trying to piece together the minutes and hours before those shots were fired how did the gunman get to that roof how was he able to get within about 150 M of the former president an elevated point a high shot able to clearly um uh Target um Donald Trump how was this possible clearly massive failures uh by the Secret Service who were tasked with protecting uh the former president a detail that should and probably would have combed the area beforehand have staked it out have worked out any V vulnerabilities clearly they missed something then of course there is the the the the gunman himself who was he what was his motive was he acting alone these are questions that they will be beginning to answer now but it will take some time we know that we know his identity we know he is from a town just south of Pittsburg around an hour or so from here intriguingly he is registered as a republican I think that will clearly formed part of the investigation was he acting alone well the suggestions today are that the gun that he used an AR-15 style automatic weapon which may have been modified uh to be used as a sniper rifle uh was legally owned by his father now that is the current understanding although this will all become clearer as the hours go on and of course the failings the Secret Service appeared to do a pretty good job in the moments after the the shooting uh but what about before uh why were why was the shooter as I say allowed to get so close uh to the former president so many many unanswered questions and of course there is then the politics the political reverberations for this country uh will be profound I have no doubt about that Donald Trump has always tried to cast himself Jonathan as the victim right now he is the victim Mark in Pennsylvania thank you let’s turn to James who is in New Jersey uh James what does this now mean for not only this camp pain but for American politics and indeed for the Republican National Convention do you to start tomorrow yeah and nothing will be affected we’re told at the RNC that’s due to continue as scheduled indeed Donald Trump is expected to make his way here uh make his way there from here in Bedminster New Jersey in due course we have not heard from Donald Trump the last we saw of him was when he got off the plane uh in New Jersey just after midnight uh surrounded by tighter than normal security but he was walking on 8 according to his son Donald Trump Jr he is in great spirits as to when we will hear from him in a public statement that’s unclear it may be that he waits until he reaches Milwaukee at the RNC but that continues as planned as scheduled a setpiece event at which of course he’s due to be anointed as the Republican nominee to run for president and he’s due to pick uh um his vice presidential pick speaking of that JD Vance he’s the hot tip to be the man selected and you know he’s posted something interesting uh on X in the past uh 24 hours uh interesting in the context of hopes perhaps that this is some kind of reset moment for America it takes a sober look at where it is in terms of political division but this is the response to events from JD Vance the man who could be Trump’s vice president if he gets elected he said the central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs that rhetoric led directly to president Trump’s attempted assassination so that’s JD van pointing the finger at Joe Biden he’s not the only one not the only elected representative in Republican ranks because uh representative Mike Collins was among those he deleted his tweet but not before he posted that Biden had um had been responsible basically in the wake of the TV debate Biden made a remark saying we’re done talking about the debate it’s time to put Trump in a bull’s eye this representative Mike Collins said that led directly to what we saw yesterday according to Mike Collins Biden sent the orders to quote him so that’s the tenor of some of the Republican reaction not promising for those who are viewing this as a an effort as an opportunity for politicians across a political landscape to sober up effectively and to take a step back from political violence and political politically violent rhetoric which has scaled up in grandstyle over the past weeks and months Donald Trump we have heard from only on Truth social uh I’ll read you what he’s posted he posted this a couple of hours ago Jonathan thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers yesterday as it was God Alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening we will fear not but instead remain resilient in our faith and defiant in the face of wickedness our love goes out to the other victims and their families we pray for the recovery of those who are wounded and hold in our hearts the memory of the citizen who was so horribly killed in this moment it is more important than ever that we stand United and show our true character As Americans remaining strong and determined and not allowing evil to win I truly love our country and love you all and look forward to speaking to our great nation this week from Wisconsin it may be that it’s in Wisconsin we hear first words from uh the former president Donald Trump Jonathan but questions right now given the immediate reaction of some in the Republican movement questions about clearly what brought us to this and where American politics goes from here James in New Jersey where Donald Trump currently is thank you very much for that update I just want to show you the scene in Butler where the Democrat Governor of Pennsylvania Josh Shapiro will be giving an update shortly just waiting for him to turn up at those microphones we’ll bring you that live when it happens lots more on Donald Trump to come here on the newsour but let’s begin the buildup to tonight’s European Championship final between England and Spain my colleague Jackie Bel TR is live for us in Berlin hi Jackie hello Jonathan yes we are outside the Olympic Stadium while the crowds and the excitement is growing ahead of England’s huge Euros final against Spain tonight there are so many England fans here they totally outnumber the Spain fans uh let us go to our Europe correspondent sihor Robbins who is also in Berlin at the Brandenburg gate where e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e need to take down the temperature and rise above the hateful wret Rick his message to Americans was be firm in your beliefs and be engaged in the political process but do it peacefully we’re also hearing that US President Joe Biden will address the nation after a situation run briefing he’ll address the nation on the uh the latest in the Donald Trump rally shooting in about an hour’s time but we’ll bring that to you live here on Sky News at halfast 6 well I’m joined now documentary filmmaker uh good to see you James um just explain whereabouts you were yesterday and what you saw so I was about 50 to 100 meters from the stage uh it’s important to explain that these events are designed mainly for television so unlike a a music concert where everybody would expect to see the artist on stage the majority of people of people at a trump rally are watching it on big TV screens um because it’s not a tradition venue so uh being I was one of those people that couldn’t see the stage and therefore couldn’t see former president Trump um he’d been speaking for about five minutes he’d gone into uh his pretty well rehearsed speech uh and was talking about immigration and referring to graphs on the monitors to the left and right of the stage as the gunshots hit him um what one heard in the audience was a mixture of quite high winds which you saw from the big flag hanging above the stage uh the general noise of the event uh and the distance of the shooter meant that the rounds actually didn’t sound very loud or definitively like gunfire but the very notable thing was that they were short purposeful B well burst there was single purposeful shots meaning that very quickly it became obvious it wasn’t a mass shooting but as we’ve subsequently disc discovered it was an attempted assassination meaning that the crowd actually calmed down fairly quickly and people weren’t running around in panic um and then order set in pretty quickly and there weren’t stampedes or dangers as you often see when there are stampedes and things like that yes you’re right the crowd certainly did seem relatively calm afterwards and I believe you spoke to people in fact you filmed people afterwards and got their reaction what did they say to you well you know initially I think most people are in shock and it’s it’s very hard to explain how disorientating this is because you just don’t know what’s happened and so it probably takes five to 10 minutes for people to understand that they’re safe they’ve they’ve personally got nothing to worry about um but then um they’re angry they’re upset uh people were crying uh it was a combination of the risk they felt to themselves but of course more importantly to the person um persons they come to see um on stage yeah we’re just looking at some of the footage that that you filmed last night how was security when you were there did you feel it was tight presumably you had to be cleared you had to go through some sort of security process that’s right as a as a former president Donald Trump has Secret Service uh for life um can you still hear us we still got you sure can yeah sorry I thought it was an audio overlap um so uh um what happened was um uh the Secret Service would run the security of the event um because Donald Trump as a former president and obviously a presidential candidate uh does have Secret Service protection and it was airport style security uh very well managed very thorough all our bags were gone through um you know very very properly and and with proper time taken um so you’re going into a secure area and that’s the important thing to understand because the shooter at this event was not in the secure area the shooter as it turns out was outside the secure area however there are already a there is a lot of conversation here about why that perimeter was relatively small in in relation to the location of the stage and I think in time to come there will be huge conversations and recriminations frankly with the Secret Service who failed uh in their duty of care to a presidential candidate absolutely that investigation ongoing um your documentary The Accidental president was about the 2016 campaign and how Trump won how do you think today’s events will change the course of of this campaign well I’ve been speaking to some pollsters here um in America uh yesterday in Washington and there is a view that people will calm down uh and possibly return to their candidate of choice but a one or 2% difference in either vot voted turnout um uh or not or not going out I know I can’t get into the politics now uh but I think there is a substantial possibility that this event that yesterday will have a bearing on the outcome of the 2024 election do you hope the rhetoric from both sides which causes so much divisiveness in American politics will calm down we heard the the governor of Pennsylvania state there saying that that temperature does need to be turned down do you think it will there seems to be already finger pointing I think it’s knowing America as I do I think it’s very unlikely to cool off anytime soon uh there are a lot of questions that don’t have answers and those answers most uh uh likely will not materialize till after the election uh people are angry there were obviously some fairly there was some fairly wild accusations of who may have done this at the event yesterday um and that’s pure conjecture um but I feel while the polarization that one talks about so often in politics uh is active and real and believe me here it is there is not going to be a cooling off um and I think uh the recriminations on the or the uh let’s say after Tremors of this event will uh uh play out for quite some time to come yeah it’s pretty depressing isn’t it and and when it comes to these rallies these huge open air rallies that are so much part of uh American political campaigns do you think that they will go ahead um as we’ve been seeing or do you think there’ll need to be some sort of radical redesign I think again having studied Trump in the 2016 election it’s very likely that he uh will be defiant in the face of this there’s no question of him sitting inside a building or anything like that as an alternative uh the energy and the Heat and intensity of these events is a propelling factor for him in in particularly this election um and of course he can do these events in a way Joe Biden cannot and again he understands the value of that in political terms uh so I think it’s extremely unlikely that there will be a moving away from Live Events because they are such a huge part of his Playbook yeah and of course in any democracy it’s vital isn’t it for our politicians to be able to to meet up close uh voters and members of the public uh we really appreciate your time um must have been traumatic for you as it was for everyone else but thank you very much for explaining what went on to us James Fletcher filmmaker who was at the rally yesterday much appreciated uh let’s bring in our International Affairs editor Dominick waghorn who’s been following events all day today and as we heard Dominic a short time ago from the governor of Pennsylvania uh speaking quite movingly about the member of the public who was killed and you have a little bit more information on him that’s right Jonathan yes I’ve got a state statement uh put on uh Facebook from the sister of the man who was killed um in this attack on Donald Trump and um what she’s had to say this is the sister of Cory comparator who is the the man who was killed uh in the shooting saying the the PA Trump rally she says claim the life of my brother Cory comparator the hatred for one man took the life of the one man we love the most he was a hero that shielded his daughters his wife and girls just live through the unthinkable and unimaginable my baby brother just turned 50 she says and had so much life left to experience hatred has no limits and love has no bounds pray for my sister-in-law nieces my mother sister me and his nieces and nephews as this feels like a terrible nightmare but we know it is our painful reality so that is the sister of Corey comparator uh lamenting uh the passing of her 50-year-old brother who was uh killed in this attempted assassination of Donald Trump and I think it has to be said that actually uh the plight of her brothers kind of been a bit overlooked today not much cover coverage of what happened uh to him and his uh killing at the hands of uh the attacker of who carried out this attack uh but now we have an update from the family there as the uh Nation as that family digest what’s happened to their family but also uh the nation digest what’s happened uh this attempted uh assassination of of Donald Trump the first attempt to kill a uh president or former president since Ronald Reagan was attacked in 1981 Dominic in The Newsroom many thanks Dominic they giving us an update on the member of the public who was uh tragically uh shot in that assassination attempt yesterday on uh former president Donald Trump and just a reminder at half past 6 we are expecting to hear from President Joe Biden he’s currently having a briefing and he’s going to up upd date the nation uh at halfast 6 UK time you’re watching the newsour coming up in a moment we’ll the Turkish coast and it’s evident that both seriously overcrowded this is one of the most severe viruses in the world I’m Alex Crawford and I’m Sky special correspondent based in Istanbul this is going to be the biggest party has ever seen that’s it it it got us then there’s a lot of action going on a lot ofat com in [Music] still we aim to be the best and the most trusted place in news clearly not had very much to eat at all a lot of them extremely thin and very frail look at her arms I can put my entire hand round this is the cocktail of drugs which the doctors at this Hospital have been giving their Corona virus patients made for people who want Clarity in an uncertain World Mother Nature is can be vicious absolutely Savage the world’s largest Falls now down to a trickle in risk of localized flooding Northern parts meanwhile can expect some good Sunny spells away from The Damp Northeast but a scattering of heavy showers will develop the Northeast looks quite a bit warmer North Wales and Central England will’ll see showery rain spreading in later while the Southwest will see more scattered showers taking over pollen counts will be high for many low to moderate in the cool North and wet South Sky News pollen reports brought to you by the cleanex your pollen Pal app welcome back to valin’s Olympic Stadium where the fans are arriving thick and fast ahead of tonight’s Euros final between Spain and England I’ve just been down there there are so many England fans but I’m happy to say that Spanish football journalist Gabrielle Garcia is with me now um the editor of Agora football and Gabrielle you’ve been down there as well and the Spanish fans are completely outnumbered is that going to make a difference in the stadium tonight what do you think well I hope not but the truth is that the England fans are uh a big number it’s a very big number of of fans much more than the Spanish ones but I hope uh the players they don’t uh realize that when they are playing and it’s like 50/50 well you’re saying that they’re buying they’re more willing to pay the black market prices and the Spanish fans convention uh the message is going to be consistent and that’s how to make America great again uh by nominating Donald Trump there are going to be a lot of people coming from all over the country who are hearing about what happened in Pennsylvania they’re going to be in Milwaukee what do you really want them to know ahead of this convention in light of the shooting with Mr Trump that Milwaukee is uh we’re going to be in a safe situation here in Milwaukee not only here in the convention hall area but at the hotels around in the communities uh the the Republican National Committee the convention committees have worked very very hard this is probably one of the most secure areas on the face of the planet right now we have thousands of law enforcement agencies from all over the state and all over the Midwest here and uh I think they’re doing a great job I really do what did the campaign tell you today have you talked to the campaign Direct what have they told you about how Mr Trump is doing and why they still want to go through with this convention Mr Trump is doing just fine he’s doing well he’s obviously been through a lot in the last 24 hours but he’s doing well his thoughts are of course are focused on the victims as well as we all are today but um we we will proceed with the convention and we will do it on time I don’t there’s no announce changes today frankly I don’t anticipate anything I think the week will go smoothly did you ramp up in what ways did you ramp up security and how many people did you add on in Wake of the shooting yeah I’m I’m not in charge of that so I can’t speak to that what I will tell you is there is so much security and so much law enforcement presence in downtown Milwaukee and the region already that uh I feel safe I’ve had an office in Milwaukee for years and uh I feel safe in downtown Milwaukee I’m absolutely confident uh that the delegates and alternates and guests 50,000 people coming to this town will as well were well I think on the front end of the convention of course we have delegates coming in today I think uh everyone’s you know thinking today as as we will all week about the victims in Pennsylvania uh but I will tell you that the messaging of this convention will not change in terms of we are here to nominate a ticket and we’re going to do it this week and uh folks will be hearing a very consistent message all week about that and I don’t expect that to change at all question eoms Milwaukee tourism that kind of I hope so uh it’s a $200 million spend uh here in the city of Milwaukee and in the region we have dozens of hotels of course hundreds of restaurants and others I I think this is going to be I mean I’m a homer so I’m a little biased but but I I’m excited that it’s coming to my home state of Wisconsin and I think the money spent here is going to be great it will help people of all economic St I mean I really it’s going to be fantastic and we get to Showcase Milwaukee to the world so personally I’m excited about that I can take a few more questions how do you think this is going to impact the tone of the convention oh well s sorry uh uh the question was how would affect the tone of the convention and uh I think certainly on the front end and really all week we’ll be thinking about the victims uh in Pennsylvania but I I will tell you uh we’re also here to to nominate a major party ticket that it this situation at this point uh is ahead in almost every single in fact is ahead in every single Target state in the country so there’s tremendous optimism amongst the delegates and the guests and of course the Trump team uh about winning this election and and I would remind you too I mean Wisconsin as some of you know uh we’re we’re kind of one of the big seven on the target States we’ve had 12 elections in the last 24 years in Wisconsin a state of about 6 million people that have been decided by less than 30,000 votes 12 elections in 24 years by less than 30,000 votes so we are truly a purple State and uh my focus State chairman is to turn it red other questions or yeah I I think I don’t I don’t know a specific schedule this week but I have not had it suggested to me that there will be any major changes uh in his schedule at all or for for that matter for the schedule for the whole convention uh we aim to have a very very good convention here as I say there are no changes on the schedule right now and I don’t anticipate any changes on the schedule uh we’re really in a very confident situation here and uh we intend to show the whole country why Donald Trump needs to be returned to the White House chairman where were you when you about shooting did you go through I was at my hotel I immediately my phone uh started buzzing for about 3 hours straight uh at my hotel and uh so it was I talked to folks I’ve talked to folks on the ground in Pennsylvania and uh you know as the tragedy kind of unfolded as we went along and uh it’s uh it’s tough you know it’s tough it’s tough and i’ I’ve been through a lot of demonstrations in my 40 Years of politics uh here in the state and elsewhere and uh so seeing something like this happen which shouldn’t happen anywhere uh it just shouldn’t and and we have some victims now and it’s terrible I’m I’m so grateful uh I’m praying for the victims as are the other members of the committee and the people here in Wisconsin I’m very grateful that President Trump uh was not injured more seriously but my thoughts today are with the victims and uh and we have a responsibility to have have a good convention here in Milwaukee and we’re going to all right thank you everyone thank you thanks thank you to see youon e e e e e e e e [Music] it’s 6 o00 I’m Jonathan Samuels this is the newsour the top stories look what happened the moment a gunman tried to assassinate Donald Trump the former president ducked to the ground before being covered by Secret Service agents a raised fist of defiance as he was escorted to an armored vehicle and taken to hospital the FBI has named 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Kooks as the gunman but investigators are still searching for a motive a photographer catches on film one of the bullets fired at the former president Joe Biden spoke to Donald Trump following the attack before addressing the nation there’s no place in America for this kind of violence it’s sick it’s sick it’s one of the reasons why we have to unite this country we cannot allow for this to be happening we cannot be like this we cannot condone this I’m Jackie B TR live in Berlin where the Euro final between England and Spain kicks off in just two hours time Gareth Southgate team have the chance for a men’s England side to win the championship for the first time in England’s way the team of the tournament Spain have won all of their matches with the help of teenage Superstar lamin yal tens of thousands of fans have traveled to Berlin hoping to be a part of History those lucky enough to have tickets have started to arrive here in the Olympic Stadium which is already quite full and one other piece of sports news after wowing sent to court the Princess of Wales crowns Carlos alcaras as the men’s Wimbledon champion for the second year in a row hello there good evening we start with a moments that could have changed the course of American History Donald Trump targeted by a lone shooter at a campaign rally a bullet grazed his ear drawing blood but ultimately failing in the attempt to assassinate the former president a member of the crowd was killed as was the gunman 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks but Trump was safely removed by security Personnel before returning to his estate in Bedminster in New Jersey his wife Melania has tonight sent an open letter to the American people saying she realized her life was on the brink of devastating change and C calling on the country to reunite this is the moment the shooting happened recorded on a mobile phone by people who saw crooks on the roof get over here get over here I hope he’s turning this way be careful guys [Music] well the person who died has now been named as Corey comparator his sister has posted a statement on social media saying he was a hero who died shielding his daughters and they and his wife are living through the unthinkable and unimaginable the governor of Pennsylvania has also paid tribute to his bravery I asked Corey’s wife if it would be okay for me to share that we spoke she said yes she also asked that I share with all of you that Corey died a hero that Corey Dove on his family to protect them last night at this rally Corey was the very best of us may his memory be a blessing last night was shocking for this community and for this Commonwealth and I know for this country the governor of Pennsylvania there our us correspondent Mark Stone takes us through how the attack unfolded Donald Trump had been at the podium for just a few minutes in Butler Pennsylvania the latest of so many campaign rallies this one familiar like all the other and then it happened take a look what happened we doing we doing watch and listen again take a look what happened two pops Trump grabs his ear then falls to the ground then a flurry then what appears to be more shot and the piercing [Applause] screams it’s not clear at this point if he’s been hit how injured he might be and all this is being broadcast live on American cable news guys here get ready get ready we [Applause] ready the podium microphone is still on [Applause] the Secret Service agents confirm the shooter is down we’re [Applause] clear come let me get my shoes let me get my shoes I got you sir I got you sir let me get my shoes hold that in your head bloody so we got to move to the CL and then they begin to move the former president watch out it was an attempt to assassinate Donald Trump it had failed and he recognized the need for immediate Defiance he was then bundled into his vehicle and Away the still images capture this extraordinary moment for America Trump Under Fire vulnerable defiant quickly a statement from the former president came I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound shots and immediately felt the bullet ripping through my skin much bleeding took place so I realized then what was happening the former president said and then from his political foe from President Biden a hastily arranged address to the nation there’s no place in America for this kind of violence it’s sick it’s sick it’s one of the reasons why we have to unite this country we can’t cannot allow for this to be happening we cannot be like this we cannot condone this and so and I want to thank the Secret Service and all the agencies including the state agencies that have been engaged in making sure that the people who and we have more detail to come relative to other injur other people may be injured in the audience I don’t have all that detail we’ll make that available to you I may be able to come back a little later tonight but we’ll put out a statement if we don’t if I’m not able to get if it’s not convenient for you all but the bottom line is that the Trump rally was a rally that he should have been able to be conducted peacefully without any problem but the idea the idea that there’s political violence or violence in America like this is just unheard of the political reverberations from all this are hard to judge right now they cannot be underestimated but the immediate focus is the investigation the witnesses will provide important information for the FBI and they are now leading on it I was in the set of bleachers to the very far left of the podium where Donald Trump was speak president Trump was speaking um you know was there with friends I heard several gunshots um the man beside me uh suffered a gunshot wind to the Head um was instantly killed um fell to the bottom of the bleachers another woman was looked like she got hit in the forearm her hand and then at that point in time uh it was rather chaotic at that point you don’t like the guy don’t vote for him don’t kill him we love the guy we’re going to vote for him you know I mean what what what is up with this violence I mean it’s just it’s just terrible from Sky News analysis of the images from the scene here’s a picture of what happened this is the spot where Donald Trump was speaking the red zone is where the crowd was it’s thought the gunman was on this roof beyond the secure perimeter of the rally about 150 M from the former president this evening we had what we’re calling an assass ination attempt against our former president Donald Trump it’s still an active crime scene as I mentioned we have a number of Agents on scene we also are working closely with other federal agencies our state partners and our local police Partners as well authorities say they have identified the dead gunman as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from a town an hour’s drive to the South a young man who tried to change the course of American history as the enormity of all this sinks in so too does the reality of just how close a call this was how close a former president was to assassination on the roof of an adjacent building the weapon thought to have been used a semi-automatic rifle bought legally by the gunman’s father it will take time to process the impact of all this the consequences for America and a society already so fractured Mark Stone Sky News in Butler Pennsylvania and some breaking news uh from Downing Street we are hearing that the Prime Minister sakir starma has spoken to former president president Trump this afternoon following the attack at yesterday’s rally the Prime Minister condemned the violence expressed his condolences for the victims and their families and also wished Donald Trump and those injured a quick recovery so Donald Trump and prime minister sakir stama speaking on the telephone a little bit earlier well James Matthews is in New Jersey for us where the former president is still recovering from the ordeal James uh reaction to this uh not only reverberating around America but indeed around the world that’s right yeah and that benevolence being channeled towards Donald Trump from Britain’s new prime minister but that’s also shared uh worldwide as you say that others have been in touch most pertinently perhaps the president of the United States himself you’ll remember last night that Biden gave a statement on camera before he’d been in touch with the man he referred to as Donald uh later they spoke on the phone it’s not clear what the content of that conversation was perhaps uh we will learn some more in about half an hour’s time because Joe Biden is due to address the nation from the Rosevelt room inside the White House he was in rohoboth Beach his weekend K home he was at church when this happened yesterday he’s been relocated to the White House overnight and this morning has been given a briefing alongside vice president camela Harris uh and other senior members of his administration uh briefings about the assassination reasons behind it and the fine detail that he will want to know about what happened and where things stand going forward because clearly that is an issue here we are 4 months from uh an American election in November and the election campaign uh has been laced with hostility and division that’s been the way of American politics uh over the past months and years and it is a context about which there’s been much talk today you know is this a moment uh to reset American politics the state of political discourse in this country an opportunity to turn the corner for the better and to step back from Division I have to tell you uh there are sentiments sentiments expressed by uh Republicans in particular I mean many are saying look this is a time to call a halt and to move forward and pursue a more peaceful path uh lindsy Graham a senior uh Republican figure is saying that today but others uh are less gracious in their remarks and some are pointing the finger at Joe Biden himself let me read you a tweet Jonathan this is from JD Vance he’s the hot tip to be Donald Trump’s vice presidential pick at this week’s Republican National Convention uh Vance tweeted this overnight on the xplatform he says this the central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs that rhetoric led directly to president Trump’s attempted assassination so that’s a man who would be a heartbeat from the president presidency if he’s chosen by Trump and Trump wins in November let me read you something else this is from the house representative U Mike Collins Republican he tweeted something which he deleted but he made a reference to Joe Biden’s remarks after the TV debate Biden had said we’re done talking about the TV debate it’s time to put Trump in AB bull’s eye that’s what Biden said Mike Collins tweeted last night that this was Biden and I quote him saying he said that Biden sent the orders uh for this assassination attempt so that’s the tenor of some of the Republican reaction uh some of the political Fallout in all of this it doesn’t Bard well for those who would seek to use this as a positive and we’ve yet to hear of course from Donald Trump uh President Biden last night talking the language of a constructive reaction of positivity moving forward we’ve yet to hear from Trump uh it may be that he waits until he gets gets to Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention that is going ahead as planned uh so that will be a big setpiece occasion big setpiece opportunity for Donald Trump to address the Republican party at large but more widely uh the American public we wait to see how he shapes the reaction or his reaction to what’s happened uh but as I say we expect to hear from President Biden in about 20 minutes uh that will be his opportunity to give consider reaction we heard from him last night fairly soon after the shooting but this will be a considered reaction uh following his conversation with Donald Trump and following extensive briefings this morning uh about the specific detail of what happened and clearly uh we would expect to hear his thoughts on the political path forward James in New Jersey thank you well the attack on Donald Trump has thrown up crucial questions about his security and the arrangements for the rest of the presidential campaign starting of course with the Republic Republican National Convention this week here’s our International Affairs editor Dominic wagle at a crucial moment in this most consequential of us elections with American politics rarely so volatile a presidential candidate is centimeters away from being assassinated this photo showing one bullet whistling past his head so how could this happen the scene of the crime viewed from above a farm show ground in Pennsylvania this is where Donald Trump was speaking the area in red in front of him where his audience was gathered there were two sniper teams stationed on the roofs of the buildings behind the former president one at either end somehow a gunman had managed to reach the roof of another building only around 130 M away from his Target if you want to really see something that said take a look at what happened he was able to fire at least three shots from a semi-automatic rifle while Donald Trump ducks for cover and Secret Service agents try to protect him then the sniper teams return fire the gunman had a clear view of Donald Trump but Sky News analysis shows he was hidden from the nearest sniper team by a tree at the edge of the site only the second team further away were able to respond effectively while the others tried to reposition to a better line of fire by that point the former president had been hit shot through the a one former FBI agent says it was a massive security failure based on that direct line of sight from that particular building to the campaign rally stage it just doesn’t make a lot of sense uh that the Secret Service who are in charge of the security for these uh type of political events then because you have a former president there um didn’t clear the building hours before and even if they didn’t clear the building in that period of time why wasn’t there some kind of observation capability the FBI must work out how Thomas Matthew krooks penetrated security but also why the young Gman has little social media presence we have just these shots of him from his graduation the attack in Pennsylvania will require a review of the way America’s politicians are kept safe just as their campaigning begins in [Applause] Earnest I would at least expect going forward that most likely what we’re going to end up seeing is an increased use of bulletproof glass around the podium that is unfortunately become a Hallmark of some political speeches here in America uh another thing that may be used more widely uh is the use of drones Donald Trump is a man who’s indulged in and pedal conspiracy theories his attempted assassination will spawn many more unless investigators can explain quickly exactly how this occurred and how they intend to stop it happening again Dominic waghorn Sky new news well I’m joined Now by Dr Linda chinsky presidential historian and author of the cabinet good to get you on the program this evening thank you very much for your time a seismic moment then in American politics put this into context for us we’ve not seen A Moment Like This uh since the 1980s and Ronald Reagan that’s right it is definitely a pivotal moment in American history and we have seen periods of intense political violence before namely the 1880s and90s the 1960s and of course the attempted assassination of Ronald ran in 1981 we’ve been fortunate that all of the attacks and plots that have occurred since then have been uncovered and none of the presidents or former presidents or candidates have been injured but what it’s you know important to look at is the broader context of this moment and we have seen a great deal of political violence in the last decade so in some ways it was almost only a matter of time before someone tried this type of action and fortunately uh the former president seems as though he will recover and um will not suffer hopefully any long-term implications afterwards uh President Biden said we cannot be like this but American politics as you’ve been saying has been divided for years and has been fueled by that that dangerous rhetoric from from all sides well I do think that we are at a particularly difficult moment it’s not unprecedented we have been divided before the problem is when those divisions start to become very personal and there’s virent R rhetoric and people are almost condoning violence through their language and we have seen that over the last 10 years or so and as a result you start to see people feeling like their world is under threat their Community is under threat and any means are Justified to try and defend that behavior and so things like like the shooting of Gabby gords or the January 6 uh Insurrection these are acts of political violence and they tend to escalate as opposed to deescalate what does history tell us uh about assassination attempts in the past and how it changes the course of uh politics and uh electoral campaigns following those attempts well it can really go one of two ways so for example after the 1912 assassin attempt of Theodore Roosevelt it was really a sobering moment and all of the candidates sort of hit paw and tried to bring the country together tried to Tamp down that sort of partisan animosity and recognized how dangerous it could be the other option is that it could get worse that this would be the start of a cycle of escalating rhetoric of attempts of Retribution and Vengeance and it’s really essential that political figures Leaders with any sort of platform speak out against violence it has no place in a republic and encourage their their supporters their candidates their um any of the one that they represent to express themsel with freedom of speech and with their ballots but that violence is is never the answer and that photo of Donald Trump his arm in the air his fist clenched the Stars and Stripes fluttering against that powder blue sky well it’s going to become an image of our age isn’t it an iconic image if you like which will be studied by historians and people such as yourself for many years to come it certainly I think will be one of the defining images certainly of his time in public life and of this era in which violence and political rhetoric has become so intense and he is certainly somebody who has embraced that which is of course not to say that this was justified by any stretch but he has very much been a part of that process and so I think that image will capture all of the fight that has gone in to this particular moment of course he would also argue that the Democratic party has been uh guilty of U of rhetoric as well in in in a similar vein it was interesting that Donald Trump on Truth social struck a more measured tone I thought than perhaps he has done previously fear not he said in capital letters there were several references to God uh Evangelical Christians we know are a big part of his base he said we will remain defiant um what do you think his strategy will be going forward well I will admit that it’s very difficult sometimes to predict what he is going to do next and historians are notoriously terrible at predicting the future anyway but I could see I could see one of two possible options either he could allow some of his allies and supporters to really go on the offense but he would remain more calm and measured which he has done for the last couple of weeks weeks and sort of appear to be above the fry and you know allow people to feel like he is um maybe a little bit of a a murder for the cause but isn’t the one actually doing the fighting or we could see a shift in tone especially as the Republican National Convention is coming up this week and he could you know seek the sort of Vengeance and retribution that we’re talking about and really talk about the importance of this fight and include some of the violent rhetoric that he has used in the past I personally hope it’s the former because his words do have so much power and I hope that we can stop this cycle of escalation but as I said he’s he’s very difficult to predict what he will do yeah and once again we should reiterate that the rhetoric has been coming from all sides hasn’t it but we thank you for your time Dr Linda chinsky presidential historian author of the cabinet thank you and just to remind you we are expecting President Biden to speak at the White House that’s going to take place in around 5 minutes or so time if if indeed he sticks to time we’ll bring that of course live here on Sky News uh stay with us coming up on the program excitement is building in Berlin ahead of tonight’s Euro’s final between Spain and England we’ll hear from none other than the sugar babes after the [Music] break we’re seeing the world get more and more divided and it’s our job to try to make sense of it all war unrest revolutions it’s not his country it’s ours they have succeeded for the first time in their country’s history in removing a leader from Power there was fighting here but there’s Clearly Now a lull and they’re using it to bring up more ammunition we aim to be the best and most trusted place for news this is a mass Exodus in which Russia is hemorrhaging some of its brightest and its best been more than 2 and a half thousand lightning strikes torrential rain and Flash ing all on top of this week’s lethal tornado holding leaders to account and Reporting on those caught up in the chaos would you like to take the opportunity Mr President on Sky News to invite Barack Obama to come here Mr Trump are you running for president can you confirm it we’re going to take a look on that day we saw your Fighters killing women killing children was that a mistake did you go too far star what do you think the Russians wanted to do with the children it’s half an hour now past the uh deadline that Hamas issued with its ultimatum to the people of ashalon and we’ve now seen a third barrage of rockets coming in another alarm the mood here is jittery and nervous I’m Dominic W horn Sky International Affairs editor [Music] e

  1. almost 300k views and only 8 comments from what i see? some of them saying it was staged!? with a man dead? the lack of comments…. do we not think that is strange?

  2. Watch the 1974 movie The Parallax View. They ALWAYS say it is a lone crazed gunman who is killed on the scene.
