Is he waiting for another manager to act before responding?
He could stay to torture English fans or watch his awful football in the next WC.
lol The guys a joke. My main gripe with him is he literally won’t pick Trent because apparently he’s not “defensive” enough to fit in his park the bus system despite him being the best attacking fallback in world football but he’ll pick Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier who have been stinking up the tournament defensively and offer absolutely fuck all going forward.
He’ll wait until he’s fired, then come up with a brilliant reason why he shouldn’t be fired, then when they say they might not fire him he’ll sit in silence until fired anyway
I believe most of the negativity against Southgate is unwarranted as he achieved FAR more than any other England manager in the last 5 decades.
On the specific of the tournament, he was heavily let down by his star players (Kane, Foden, Bellingham) and probably tinkered a bit too much with the line up and module in order to find a way to make them shine. He clearly failed to do so, but was it really his fault?
He still got quite a few substitutions spot-on and gave the team the right mentality (late winners, comebacks and faultless penalty shootout do not happen by chance).
That said, 8 years in charge is a long spell and he should simply step down.
There were enough chances and lucky breaks. Time to go
Is every other manager but Spains getting sacked too?
Sure they didn’t win, but they got further than all the other losers.
Let’s face it, nobody likes England and we had the whole European bloc and the other Home Nations cheering against us because we’re a nation of arseholes.
We vote for Brexit, vote consecutive Tory governments into power, give Nigel Farage a 14% vote share and go to every foreign country acting like pissheads who own the place, and we’re surprised nobody cares about the (now 58) “years of hurt” we sing about when It’s Coming Home starts playing. (By the way, fuck that song, it’s overplayed and feels as if David Baddiel put a voodoo curse upon us.)
And nowhere does this show more than us talking about replacing Southgate, despite him having a better track record than any past England manager, all because we’re a bunch of whiny little children who can’t take a loss.
A lot of England’s players are massively overrated due to playing alongside much better players with their club sides.
Dude has a 1-billion lineup but they played like total strangers in every match, and fans thinking it’s ok because “we reached the finals”. You should sack him even if they won ffs
He’ll go, but the list of potential replacements isn’t exactly inspiring. Potter, Howe and Carsley are the most likely and knowing the FA it’ll be Carsley. Why any genuinely “world class” manager would want the job is beyond me.
Why do England fans act like coming second is a loss? We don’t have some God given right to win anything and therefore any lesser result than absolute victory is a total failure.
I’m not a football fan, but apparently the players adore him and feel cared for and supported by him. That’s worth a hell of a lot surely? AND he’s got them to second place, twice, silver medals!
I support my local team, they have their moments but by and large set up not to be beat as that’s what the personnel affords. And I am all for it watching how frustrated it makes the opposition.
When I tune in to watch England I kind of don’t expect to have to watch the same formation as my local team nor same tactics of sitting back and hoping to snatch one.
There is 300m+ talent up top, and the way we set out absolutely starves it of chances.
They were bailed out on numerous occasions by moments of magic. When the keeper is the player of the team in a team worth what this team is you know something isn’t right.
Speaking as a non-football fan who just happened to Google how the team has done in the past, I love the fact that everyone is like “sack him, he sucks” while completely ignoring the fact that, by all objective standards, the England team has consistently done among the best it ever has in terms of the final results under his leadership (I mean, when was the last time England have even got to the finals twice consecutively?).
I’m not saying he’s necessarily the best manager ever, but I think there would be a lot of international football fans who would think we’ve gone completely mad if we said “oh yeah, we want to fire him and get someone new because we think he’s crap” to them and, if people get their wish, likely will a lot of “why did we do so terribly, we fired the last guy because he was crap, how did we do WORSE” comments four years from now and wishes to get Southgate back.
Southgate has been the right manager at the right time for England, when you consider the mess of an England team he inherited.
He has done a brilliant job of lifting the weight of the England shirt on the players and coaching the players to deal with the levels of pressure and expectation that comes from playing for England. The players have. for the most part, look like they actually enjoyed playing for the national side (which is something that was rarely the case before), the media circus around England is much better managed, and I think that has showed in results.
But there is equally a point where you have to question whether Southgate’s tactical limitations have taken England as far as they can. It is one thing to look good in qualifying, and to bumble through the tournament, but it’s another to take on the better teams in tournaments and come out on top.
Southgate plays safe and he plays percentages – that will get you so far. But there is a point where you have to ask whether he has made the most of the talent he has available to him, and that is where I think you have to thank him for is undoubted good work, but politely suggest that someone else should take it from here.
I assume he’ll want to move on as much as the fans want him too. He’ll know he’s had a successful era (sorry if you’re too young to remember 1996-2016) but now that’s come to an end. He will now look to club management and we’ll move forward to a new manager who’ll either take us to the next level with attacking football or, probably more likely, back to the joys of autumn 2007.
Just resign ,its time for another to take the reins
There’s no hurry.
There are no competitive international matches until next March, so there’s lots of time for Southgate and the FA decide what happens next.
It’ll be interesting to hear what the current squad say about Southgate in 10 years or so. Obviously he does have good man management skills but the players obviously won’t come out and criticise him mid tournament, but I do wonder if any of them disagree with the set up, especially those stuck on the bench
Carried by big moments by big players, but he isn’t a good tactical manager. These last few years are 100% missed opportunities
England needs a manager who has won a major international tournament before; World Cup, Euros or Copa America
the starting line-up should be players who can play precise 1 and 2-touch football, route-1 doesn’t work any more
and they must have the courage to start the likes of Kane and Bellingham on the bench if they’re not paying well during the tournament
Lol hate this narrative that England only get far in tournaments because they get the easy draw
It’s random and if this time all the big teams were on the other side it’s not exactly Gareth’s fault.
He’s been good for England. I think his contribution to English football is actually bigger than most realise. He’s been instrumental in pushing the youth coaches and schools to train players a different way rather than 442 long ball.
His progression to England manager would always put him under extra scrutiny. English press are ruthless though it has helped that the power of the press has dimmed as newspaper circulation has fallen. Maybe that’s why he’s lasted this long.
Initially he was criticised for his lack of substitutions which even now is was visible though the subs he was making were influential to the game.
However this tournament he regressed tactically. Whether it was to save the players energy levels or not they just played too reserved. He sat back when England were leading 1-0 rather than try and extend the lead. When they went 1-0 down it’s like the players threw the playbook out of the window and pushed them selves. So they were going through in spite of his tactics. The players do share a portion of the blame for this but then the tactics didn’t help them.
Maybe they need to really look at the constant issue of too many games.
Southgate has been great for the England team. But he’s taken them to a point but can’t seem to get the further.
Thank you for the two finals Gareth you will always be a legend for that. For sorting out England’s penalty shootout block and for making England FA a more modern movement.
Thank you and goodbye.
Of course, he’s not going to go.
Let’s be real.
He’s paid £4.9m a year.
We are basically paying him £10m to have another crack at it.
It’s soooo much higher than what the other international managers get and he’s so shite. Like many £mil higher – think next highest was £1.2m.
I’ll be fucking stunned if he goes.
Please go.
Time to go. I fear the next manager won’t be so lucky with the kind draws he’s had.
he should take another penalty and if he scores he keeps his job lol
Southgate is obviously well-liked and is an excellent man manager. The players love him.
But tactically he is poor and he is reactive in his decisions. There is a reason we have lost 80% of the games against other top 10 teams.
At this point I just want to enjoy watching England – I’d prefer us to play brave, progressive football and lose in a quarters – then this pragmatic, disjointed tournament approach.
England need a coach who can foster a good spirit in the camp, make brave decisions about big players that are under performing (ahem Kane, Foden, Bellingham, Walker) and is tactically adept and can promote a high line, high press. Is Klopp free 😂👀
You guys are weird, he has taken England to the semi final of the World Cup, and final of 2 Euro’s – a little bit of luck and those could have been trophies.
He’s a good guy, a man I look up to, and largely he’s done well, but we need a new approach now. It’s time for someone else.
