I’m surprised Germany of all people would pick anyone other than Russia considering how their war played out
I have seen this already, there is another version of this but from almost right after the war.
It’s an odd question to pose, naturally the answers will be colored by whatever front was and is most publicized in each respondent country.
The question here is: who is the most popular in media from WW2 allies…
The true answer is Italy

Directly after the war, the Germans said „The Russians“ and „The Americans“ were trailing far, far behind. But 70 years of Hollywood movies changed that.
“Which of the three great allies, the U.S.S.R., Britain and the U.S.A., has contributed most to the defeat of Germany? In theory it should be possible to give a reasoned and perhaps even a conclusive answer to this question. In practice, however, the necessary calculations cannot be made, because anyone likely to bother his head about such a question would inevitably see it in terms of competitive prestige. He would therefore *start* by deciding in favour of Russia, Britain or America as the case might be, and only *after* this would begin searching for arguments that seemed to support his case.” George Orwell in “Notes on Nationalism”, 1945.
I long for the day when we can stop fighting about WWII.
Statistically it isn’t even an argument, almost all German losses were the USSR. I would love to say Britain, we fought valiantly and did a brilliant job, but Stalin’s sheer disregard for Soviet lives posed a hurdle that nothing else could. America contributed significantly via lend lease, and we did to a lesser extent, as well as in terms of fighting too, but I can’t see any answer other than the USSR.
I think the soviets sacrificed the most, but it wouldnt have been possible without any of the three so Its stupid to compare who ‘did more’
80% of all German military casualties occurred on the Eastern front. Think how offended people in Russia must feel by looking at these statistics. For them, this paints a very grim picture of objectivity in western media
Not a fan of the Soviet Union or Putin today.
But, objectively speaking, Germany did suffer 75 to 85 percent of their casualties on the eastern front. That’s basically, by and large, where they lost the war.
The US inflicted two to three times as many casualties on Germany as the UK did. This leaves five or so percent for the UK.
What’s hilarious is that this isn’t measurable. What vile bull
> Rome became for us an explosive city. […] For us, the security of the rearguard of the frontline was a severe issue. The morale of our troops was directly affected, since they could not be safely sent to Rome anymore for short periods of rest.
For sure, Americans found easier to free Europe
“The Russians” should be replaced by “The Soviets”, otherwise it misrepresents the role of other nations in WWII from the USSR side. The same goes for “The USA” instead of “The Americans”.
Soviets.
Russians were a part of the red army but it was made up of a lot of nations.
The UK and Russia deserve more credit. Honestly.
It depends on how you define “did the most”.
I mean, the british did quite literally everything they could to defeat the nazis. But the russians had much greater casualties, despite not really caring about the nazis until the nazis attacked them.
The US also didn’t get directly involved until being unwillingly dragged into the war, but their material contribution made a big difference.
All in all one can only wonder what the world would have looked like in 1950 if one of these countries would have remained neutral.
This is what decades of Hollywood propaganda does to people.
I am truly anti-communist but this is so unfair to the Russians.
The Red Army lost 8 million men fighting the Nazis whereas US lost 180k men, roughly 50 times less.
Roughly 9 of every 10 men of the Wehrmacht perished on the Eastern Front.
The Red Army defeated the Nazis, that’s simply a historical fact.
I think we shouldn’t underestimate Hitler‘s contribution lmao
O my god this is one of the worst graphics i had even see
I think it’s fair to say that the war wouldn’t have been won without any one of these countries, at the very least not least as quickly. The war was won with British intelligence, American guns, and Soviet blood. Not to mention the entirety of the rest of the allied forces and resistance movements. I think it’s incredibly reductive and disrespectful to suggest that any single country that was involved in the downfall of fascism was somehow unimportant.
I think the British are not so far off with their opinion as the comments might make it seem.
In the very Beginning of the War, Britain didnt give in, they decided to fight on.
They could also have choosen to negotiate peace terms with Germany!
Which could have completly changed up things.
(you have to see it from the viewpoint of the time)
I write this as a german
The Russians slammed 11 million soldiers and 60+ thousand tanks into Germany, which drained the Germany army dry of much needed materials and allowed the allies to push through easy. I think Russia did the most
80% of the german forces were deployed to the east, that alone tells you who won the war.
The Soviet Union (not Russia) defeated 80% of the German military and captured Berlin. Amazing how not even the Germans can get it right.
This is how history gets rewritten…
Poland be like
“All of you fucking suck”
Good evening Eurovision. Here’s Romanian votes:
10 points go to USA
11 points go to Moldova
12 points go to Russia.
And Germany never paid the last $2 billions debt for the oil we gave them.
And then the people here will smugly talk about those “brainwashed” commies, Chinese and assorted group of dark and evil people.
One person did more than anybody. He invaded Russia and declared war against USA, thus ensuring Germany’s defeat. He also killed Hitler.
It was mainly a kind of collaboration. Who cares who has done the most? Many, many innocent people have died for our freedom. And they are all heroes. It doesn’t matter if they were Russians, British, Canadians, Poles or Americans.
In 2022 we can still be happy what all those people have done for us.
Answer: it was the Russians. Yes, the Russians.
How did they forget eastern front!?
How about saying Germany itself? The amount of shit and sabotaging they did to themself is just ridiculous.
Now lets ask the swiss
Let’s be real here, Hitler is the one who defeated the Nazis.
There’s an interesting graph showing the evolution of those answers over time. Right after the war, Russia was almost the universal answer
