  2. I’d guess that that’s an unpleasant thing to listen to if you’re from Gibraltar. I wonder if the player who led that chant has ever spoken to anyone from there, before deciding what country they ought to be from on their behalf?

  7. To be fair, I’m fine with Gibraltar being British. That was agreed in a treaty and Gibraltarians overwhelmingly want to remain British.

    But the airport was built on neutral land during the Spanish civil war, taking advantage of the situation. That’s definitely illegal and the use and management of the airport should be shared with Spain. This was actually agreed between the UK and Spain in the 80’s, but the government of Gibraltar blocked the agreement.

  8. I’m Spanish (Andalusian), totally agree with Gibraltarians about this.

    Many ppl use football to cheer on extreme political ideas such as fascism or extreme left. None of it should be allowed in sports.

  14. I think Gibraltar should be British, since that’s what its inhabitants want. I also think the players should apologize since they were acting as representatives of the national team. But honestly, I also think that some stupid ass footballers chanting stupid ass chants for the express purpose of pissing off the rival team is not something to be offended about, especially when you’re supposed to be the nation of “just a bit of banter, mate!”.

    Yes, Spanish people in general think Gibraltar is an occupation, a rightful one but an occupation. And there is nothing bad with that.

    Spain is not going to press on that claim.

    Now, Gibraltar’s government is as usual looking for attention, they will do anything they can to become annoying. Angry bitter people, all they can think about is how to make things difficult with Spain…

  16. Makes a lot of sense. When a group chats to end your sovereignty, you have to expect some sort of response.

    I guess footballers continue to be typical footballers living in a bubble that doesn’t represent the real world.
