I hadn’t notice this at first regarding Walker against Spain. But it did change my view on this.

You can also argue that if Bellingham would have been marking carvajal then Shaw wouldn’t have been out of position. You could also say that Saka could have gotten back and covered Williams. Mainoo wasn’t playing as a deep lying six, he was more box to box.
People blaming walker for this clearly don’t understand the game. It’s very rarely ever one player that is at fault.
In theory Bellingham should’ve marked Carvajal at the start of that play, and him failing to do so (+ Spain’s brilliant passing) caused the snowball effect of everyone else suddenly being out of place.
Though honestly the play from Spain was so good, it’s hard to say it was England’s fault more so than it was Spain’s merit (and this is coming from someone who’d be more than glad to blame Bellingham, or the mentioned MU players haha)
I understand Mainoo being too far forward but wasn’t Shaw supposed to be more attacking because it was a 5 at the back? According to the team sheets I’ve seen Shaw and Saka were wingbacks, and Walker was right-centreback. So I’d say all 3 were out of position
Mainoo did this constantly and Southgate did nothing to teach him.
