  1. Great deal for Europe while slow walking Ukrainian support.the rich have always enjoyed a good little war.

  2. When Europe buys oil from India , the people here will discuss how Europe has to do it to prevent excess oil prices / they are not violating any sanctions.

If you cut off the first part of the title and just wrote “India continues to buy oil from Russia despite Ukraine war” you would see a ton of people asking to sanction India as they are a Russian asset, which would stupidly create an Asian mega axis power while also being a stunningly ignorant take on Indias foreign policy.

I say this as an American…

The European posters here have so much to learn about global geopolitics and how badly their continent screwed up in funding the Russian economy since crimea. Every Russian missile hitting Ukraine is primarily funded by European NATO allies who purchased oil and natural gas for decades from an obvious enemy power. Indias purchase of oil from Russia in these quantities is incredibly recent and in service of European imports. The value of Indian purchases in that time span is so much lower than what western Europe has done even in the past 6 months preceding the war

You guys should start looking inwards into your own shitty corrupt greedy leaders /government instead of blaming Americans Indians and Chinese nonstop. I doubt you will do so as the blame game is what runs your continent.

  3. even nato oligarchs are buying and yet blaming india, why didn’t they stop buying, well they sell their own for their own benefits, like ukraine’s leader is doing now selling kith and kin life for his own benefit

  4. Europe has dismantled domestic production despite running some of the most environmentally sound operations in the world (to whatever extent resource extraction can be). Operators run their operations to high standards, subject to strict environmental controls such as subsidence monitoring using satellite reflectors, groundwater monitoring through boreholes, seismicity monitoring through seismometers, flora and fauna studies, plus socially you require sign off from local communities and stakeholders and in some cases royalties to local landowners.

Instead, European governments have chosen to kill the local producers with 75% tax in the north sea, freezing of exploration permits in Italy, blanket ban of specific areas above and beyond natura (Pitesai), suspension of licences in Spain. To cover our energy needs, Europe imports LNG from the USA and Russian Oil through India, and gas from North Africa.

LNG needs to be compressed, transported and regasified, resulting in an environmental footprints tens of times higher than domestic gas. Russian oil through India also comes at an environmental cost due to long transportation routes, and also possibly human cost given the situation in Ukraine. Europe is killing its O&G sector and handing the keys to dirtier, pricier and less conscientious operators.

  5. That’s disgusting. The European governments keep feeding the Russian genocidal war on Ukraine. Such a shame for the world

  6. Honestly the Russian oil seems to be selling anyway, and Russia being forced to sell it at such a discount still shows the sanction have in fact affected russian oil and gas export prospects

  7. Short term politics and delusion has poisoned Europe for the last few decades. Self reliance was sold for profit and the wishy washy idea that Russia would play nice if their economy was tied to ours.

Here in the UK the Tories closed our large Gas storage facilities in 2017 to save money which is why we got hit hard by the price gouging the other year. Idiots shutting and blocking nuclear power didn’t help in other countries.

The best thing about Green Energy is taking power out of the hands of the current oil cartel.

  8. The sheer freaking difference of tone just about sums up reddit for the most part. A previous thread was packed with people abusing India and the government, calling for ending all ties and ditching India for other economies, calls of genocide, dictatorship and fascism. Now, it is just mellow criticisms of how dependant Europe is, and any attempt by an Indian is met with chants of whataboutism and delusion and what not. People have to learn that geopolitics and economics are too complex for most of us, and that rosy dreams seldom come to fruition.

  9. People are not looking at the Ukraine war from a West Europe/US standpoint.

Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States- the initial NATO members were always safe from Russian aggression due to the buffer states as long as they played safe.

When some of the populus buffer states joined NATO, they gained manpower too.
EU stabilised the whole game economically and intellectually.

Now that China is the new economic superpower, Russia has to be more militarily advanced and cautious that China in contained. This war will restructure the Russian mentality for decades to come.

Putin was lord of scrap weapons before the war. One Putin dies, another crazy and fearful guy will ascend with a battle hardened military with better weapons and cash strapped purse. Russia will become dependent on the EU to recover from the economic shock. A perfect toy.

  10. Sure, Europe loves cheap oil while Ukraine pays the price. Not a pretty sight

  11. It’s almost like money is more important than human lives to politicians and rich boys

  12. People in “the west” really don’t care where it comes from, they buy whatever they want. They don’t care.

  13. This story is constantly repeated without proper context thus giving deceiving implications.

A, its not oil, its refined oil products. No, its not the same, because if you want something useful out of crude, you need to build a huge, capital- and expertise intensive machine called refinery. Which is how any physical product works, its like saying if you buy iron ore from Siberia and make steel out of it, the steel is Russian – it isn’t.

B, these articles write figures without giving any clue to the reader what do they mean. The articles cites EU imports of refined oil products from India doubled in 2023 to 232 thousand barrels. That sounds a lot, but what if I tell you just diesel consumption alone in the EU is around 10 million barrels a day, so thats going from covering 1% to 2% of daily consumption – exact data is either not public or hard to mine, but I’m pretty sure these imports are almost all diesel products, because pre-war the EU had about a 10% gap between domestic diesel production vs consumption , with Russia covering around 500 thousand barrels before the sanctions came into effect.

Also, this is an article from January, and I saw this same or similar headline reposted here at least half a dozen times. Feels like agenda-pushing if you ask me.

  14. Well it sure sounds like a good reason for Ukraine to step up the refinery drone attacks

  15. Quick profit for the sake of emboldening the nuclear power with imperialistic ambitions. Yeah that’s definitely not something that brings WW3 closer, unlike Ukraine being able to strike back

  16. I wonder why must country with Oil (petro) are a bunch of A-holes.

Speaking from experience from one of those countries.

My goveremnet is shit, and our “presidetn” idolize Putin.

  17. Buying at record rates in ***2024*** or ***Bought*** at record rates in 2023?

  18. 230k per day is basically nothing, no matter that it was an increase of 110%.

  19. Everyone’s ok with this. India buys Russian oil at a discount, Europe buys it from India at normal prices. The net result is Europe gets the oil at standard price, with consistent supply (Russia can’t afford to piss India off by cutting supply, like they threatened to do to Europe), and India (a more friendly country) gets to keep the 10% that this costs the Russians.

  20. Geopolitics and energy independence are often overlooked aspects to renewables.

  21. Europe is so hypocritical to demand India to stop buying oil from Russia while Ukraine burns.

  22. Why are people angry at this?

Russia is a MAJOR energy producer. You can’t just cut energy buying from them and NOT expect a world wide energy crisis. Europe felt the brunt of it at the early stages of the war.

The world needed a country like India to be a middle man. Russia exports heavily discounted unrefined fuel to India. India refines it and manufactures it down further and sells it at a market price (for huge profit), keeping a semblance of global supply chain going. It still hurts Russia’s bottom line and it basically shifts regional geopolitical power away from Russia and more into the hands of India and China. All this is happening as Russian refining industry is in a death bed and will decades before they recover the manufacturing capabilities.

Of course their is a line. India has to keep buying at a steeply discounted rate which will in the long term hurt Russia’s economy. Also India has to remember circumstances lead to their economic boom. This isnt Russia being nice and offering good prices to a friend. They are forced too. Now we just have to make sure India doesn’t become to reliant on Russian oil because in the end Russia can cut it off when they want to create their own pressure on India.

This is all to plan, what is the actual important is overall India and Russian relations. Will India become reliant on cheap discounted Russian fuel to the point their economy depends on it. Will India start exporting products under sanctions back to Russia as they become closer? these are the actual important questions.

  23. Europe supporting Putin more than trump at this point

  24. I mean when have we expected the self serving highly entitled Europeans to give a shit about anything other than shutting on America. I mean honestly, a terror government invades a sovereign country on their doorstep and they come running to the USA for everything. Now we find out they are knowingly funding the war through indirect oil purchases, is it that much of a shock?

European sensibilities have always been performative and frivolous. They are meant to make us themselves feel good, not affect change for good. There is a reason they will always be in 4th place in the world power stage.

    Also Europeans are smelly af

  25. India is buying crude oil for at price of production or lower, then refining it and reselling it. Russia still isn’t profiting from the deal

  26. Even high school kids should know that putting economic sanctions on the large country that is a big net exporter of raw materials is just a shooting in one’s own foot.

That was simply a waste of time and resources to destroy its own economy.

Every long war is in its essence the economy war and Europe doesn’t even remotely know how to fight it. Not even where to start.

Luckily at least there is a lot of capital that previous generations accumulated that will put some buffer for stupid politician actions and keep everything afloat, but in the long run politicians have to become much less stupid.

Finally it will be quite interesting to know whose capital stands behind those Indian companies that lead this operation. I highly doubt that it is Indian capital.

  27. The OG “fuck em” capitalists are the Europeans, what did you expect ?

The US might seem like they do sketchy finance decisions, but they got nothing on us, we basically invented that shit.

And no, it’s not a good thing that we live and breathe greed.

  28. Time to moonshot sustainable, self sufficient energy production. That is if roasting half the planet and being over-run with climate refugees isn’t reason enough.

  29. It was never about getting rid of Russian oil. It was about cutting Russian profits by introducing middle men into the supply chain.

  30. Yuros being hypocrites?

    Shocking. Said no one ever.

  31. People don’t know even a 10% of what is really going on…

  32. That’s not news and it’s the best not only for EU and India, but for the whole world as well.

EU gets oil at market rates, India gets a nice share without doing much, and the rest of the world doesn’t face a massive oil crisis.

Yes, from a purely ethical point of view it’s not optimal, but geopolitics are never black or white.

What EU should have done is not shoot itself in the foot by shutting down a large portion of its own production of energy. By always wanting to be greener than green they skipped tons of steps and now they’re f*cked.
