My whole family is like this. I don’t understand why some Portuguese people have this inferiority complex with Spain. Plus, we stay winning since we get to practice another foreign language and they keep being monolingual betas. So, I love speaking Castillian when I am in Spain. Don’t really need them to try to speak Portuguese to like our hermanos. I love them either way

I never understood this. I speak spanish and I can mostly understand or deduce portuguese by default. But they insist in speaking english, dude i will understand you better in portuguese than in english.
Hell same with italians, there may be one word here or there that I miss but I can pick everything just by context because the root of the words is similar.
Portuguese do the same in France, they came in hordes in the 1960’s-1970’s and still speak in portuguese all those years later ! A language that is basically spanish with lots of sh-jh-ui.

Portugal is a useless country, Spain should be the sole country in the Iberic Peninsula !

So sorry for the idiot who visited you.
We love traveling to Spain, yes we alreayd stayed at 5 star hotels in Canary islands and… we spoke portunhol. The locals seem to like that we make an effort to speak the local language, I think it is nice to visit and try to be respectfull of the locals.
Even my boyfriend spoke German with the locals!
Wish the turists tried to speak portuguese with me here… instead I have to take with “avecs” in the summer speaking frog with me. JE NE PARLE PAS PORRA!
