Between 1957 and 1975 you could take a bus from London to Calcutta (Kolkata). It would take about 50 days and would become known as ‘The Hippie Route’ a 10,000 mile journey.

  1. Must have been a fascinating journey crossing several very different cultural regions – Western Europe, Communist Eastern Europe (Yugoslavia and Bulgaria), the Middle East, and South Asia.

It’s sad that much of the non-Europe part of this route has been hard to travel through safely (and sometimes impossible to travel through at all) since the late 70s.
