  1. the hope beyond hope: despite his defensiveness, they’ve finally gotten thru to him / his doctor comment was a window to his exit / schiff’s public comments represent confirmation and open the floodgates for the rest of dems to speak honestly

  2. I’m guessing it went something like:

A democrat congressman/woman: “Please drop out”

    Joe Biden: “No.”

Another democrat congressman/woman: “Please drop out”

    Joe Biden: “No.”

  3. “the call was controlled by the Biden team and ended before members could ask questions.”

    Such surprise 😔

  4. >”You saw what happened recently in terms of the meeting we had with NATO. I put NATO together,” Biden said.

    >”Name me a foreign leader who thinks I’m not the most effective leader in the world on foreign policy. Tell me! Tell me who the hell that is! Tell me who put NATO back together!’ he said.

    >”Tell me who enlarged NATO, tell me who did the Pacific basin! Tell me who did something that you’ve never done with your Bronze Star like my son — and I’m proud of your leadership, but guess what, what’s happening, we’ve got Korea and Japan working together, I put Aukus together, anyway!” he said.

I feel like I’m watching a family member who’s in denial about their age

  5. >One member confirmed to ABC News the accuracy of the following comments from Biden aimed towards Crow:

I gotta say, even if I am going to support Biden if he’s the nominee, this is such a bad look on him. He sounds so arrogant. This is bigger than him, but sounds like he can’t get past himself to see that.

  6. The way the Democratic Party has handled this is a shitshow. If people want Biden out okay, then plan things out on private. All the leaks to the media, individual people calling on Biden to step aside in public, all these things show signs of a weak and divisive party to everyone. Regardless if you want or don’t want Biden to step aside, they have managed this so badly

  7. I’m not a fan of how this went down but I hope it’s quick and unified.

There’s a little too much glee in people in here celebrating the death of Biden’s candidacy while seemingly forgetting that there’s a 4th Reich at our door that we were supposed to be fighting.

  8. Notably, AOC and Sanders are fully behind Biden. If they weren’t we’d be seeing ‘progressives try to tear down party’ headlines.

  9. Note that this occurred on Saturday. An eternity these days.

  10. Chuck Todd on MSNBC just said he thinks Biden steps down by next week. That’s the first “real” political analyst I’ve heard say that.

  11. The only Democrat who is polling higher than Biden in a hypothetical matchup against Trump is Michelle Obama, who has expressed no interest at all in ever running.

Yes it would be great if Biden could drop out and be replaced by a candidate that has a better chance of beating Trump, but the important thing that no one seems to be factoring in is that **according to the polls that person does not exist.**

So in all seriousness, what in the actual fuck are we even talking about this for?

  12. Spoiler alert: if he drops out regardless of the democrat chosen, the discourse will change to why they’re a bad choice. I remember the shit that was thrown at Kamala Harris when she was in the democratic primary last time.

  13. This article is referring to the call from last Saturday. I don’t think there’s any substantial new information here.

  14. This was a last year conversation. Where were all the neighsayers back when this should have been done?

  15. Ducking dems always setting our own house on fire to keep reps warm. Shiff should stfu.

  16. Ok, replace him as the candidate if there is time. While they are at it, they need to start replacing every single public servant and politician over the age of 70. All of them.

  17. House Democrats: You can’t win!

    Biden: Yes I can!

    HD: Nuh-uh!

    Biden: Uh-huh!

These phonecalls must be super productive.

  18. Why on earth would Democrats think he can’t win? This is completely baffling.

  19. Anti-Establishment Joe isn’t dropping out just because the establishment is upset. I hope he ran that teleconference like Eric Mays would have.

  20. Everything about this event is nuts, and it seems like 90% of people have terrible takes.

No one knows what to do, and every single suggestion is rife with serious issues that are at best contradictory, and more typically just void of any recognition of the reality of the situation.

I have seen people insist that Biden being nominated by voters is “undemocratic” but that party elites choosing a candidate is not.

People have put forth Kamala Harris, someone who was a bad candidate even 4 years ago, and has only gotten more unpopular in that time, and who also has the added difficulty of being a black woman in the United States trying to get elected.

Other candidates that have been put forth are I think great candidates, but there is no process by which they would be chosen democratically 4 months before the election. There is no means of running numerous campaigns for a two week or 4 week primary cycle, and then setting up new elections in every single state, approving all of the measures, reserving and preparing all of the space, and then getting voters out to vote.

That would leave, what, 6-8 weeks until the general election? And this new candidate is going to be able to run a full fledged and successful campaign against a literal cult leader who is the most famous person on earth and can do no wrong and still maintain support?

There are two basic options here:

Stop pretending you care about the democratic process by attacking the *actual democratic process* and just nominate another candidate without voter input, or stop acting like a bunch of panicky Democrats who flee at the idea of a tough fight.

There are no easy options, some of them are not democratic, but nor is Biden is being ridiculous for thinking that a sitting president with a very successful administration is the best option when there is little to no time left for anything else.

Yes, he has an ego, he ran for president of the United States so that much should be obvious, but this call went exactly as one would expect for the party’s leader and standard bearer who is being challenged by members of the party who have yet to provide *any* viable alternative.

People are here comparing Biden to Trump, as if Trump would ever even *take* this call. It’s an absurd comparison, and it’s the exact kind of “both sides” BS that is responsible for the rise of Trump and MAGA in the first place.

  21. Biden CAN win. As a technical it is possible . The Problem is Biden CANNOT campaign.

  22. If they want him out, they need to work on getting someone to oppose him at the convention. It should be obvious by now that haranguing him isn’t getting them anywhere.

  23. I’ve never seen a sitting president be so sabotaged by his own party, particularly at a point in time like this when our democracy is on the line.

  24. Like, can democrats stop doing this shit out in public.

For real. This just looks so fucking messy

  25. If anyone involved actually thought he was incapable of being president, they’d be asking him to step down from actively being president, too. Seeing as the only point of discussion is running for re-election, it feels more like they’re scared of what others may think and are shooting themselves in the foot by keeping that idea front and center. Note how the discussion has always been “we don’t think you can win” and not “we don’t think you can govern”. They’re scared of public perception and are actively making it worse in the process.

  26. This is why Trump will win. Dems are tearing down Biden so MAGA doesn’t need to.

  27. If they think Dems can’t win now, just wait until they appoint an unelected candidate to be the next President (unless it’s Harris of course).

  28. Who do they want to replace him on the ticket?

I feel like they’re trying to throw this.

  29. Party over person, right? Get the Democrats over the line so we all don’t have to put up with another four (possibly more) years of Dump.

  30. >”You saw what happened recently in terms of the meeting we had with NATO. I put NATO together,” Biden said.

    > “Name me a foreign leader who thinks I’m not the most effective leader in the world on foreign policy. Tell me! Tell me who the hell that is! Tell me who put NATO back together!’ he said.

    > “Tell me who enlarged NATO, tell me who did the Pacific basin! Tell me who did something that you’ve never done with your Bronze Star like my son — and I’m proud of your leadership, but guess what, what’s happening, we’ve got Korea and Japan working together, I put Aukus together, anyway!” he said.

    > “Things are in chaos, and I’m bringing some order to it. And again, find me a world leader who’s an ally of ours who doesn’t think I’m the most respected person they’ve ever—” he said.

    > Biden also called on members of Congress to do a “better job” of promoting his successes, implying their lack of support was somehow the reason for his eroding electoral standing, according to a source.

Based and accurate. Biden should be drawing more attention to how directly involved he was in coordinating the international response on Ukraine.

  31. They’re right. He can’t win and he’s going to take the House and Semate down with him.

  32. This call happened Saturday before the Trump assassination attempt and since then there’s been new polling showing that things are even worse for Biden in battleground states. I believe it’s nearly a forgone conclusion at this point that he will step aside and the only real question is how exactly is it going to go down and who replaces him – will he step aside immediately so that Kamala can run as President, Kamala runs as the 2024 Democratic candidate, or there is some type of brokered/open convention process where someone completely different gets the nomination?

EDIT: Oh snap, I’m now just seeing that Biden said in a BET interview today that “only a medical condition” would cause him to reconsider – that seems to me like a very intentional planting of a seed. I will be very surprised if Biden hasn’t stepped aside come August.

  33. If Biden isn’t going to step down, then I think a smart strategy would be to get a strong VP and have the VP be more or less the face of their campaign during election season.

  34. Adam Schiff is a team player. If he’s calling for Biden to exit the race then the decision has already been made. They’re either softening up the voters for the change or they’re going to move without Biden’s consent. I think it’s really sad that Biden has spent a lifetime in public service and can’t see that he’s suddenly become a liability. He needs to do what’s right for the Democratic Party and the American people.
