European R&D Spending by Country Regions

  1. As far as I can tell, the highlighted Braunschweig (Brunswick) area includes the cities of Braunschweig, Göttingen and Wolfsburg. Braunschweig has a large Technical University with over 20,000 students and a whole host of institutes. Göttingen University is one of Germany’s oldest universities and the city is home to several institutes of the Max Planck Society, which holds the record for most Nobel prizes awarded to its scientists (37). Wolfsburg is known for the headquarter of the Volkswagen AG, which spends a ton of money on research and also attracts other automotive companies and research institutions to the area.

  2. The dark blue in the UK seems to overlap with the Golden Triangle so that’s no surprise. I expected Northern Italy to be higher up though.

  3. In Germany, it’s seems to be just the clusters around the 3 big car manufactures. VW in the North, Mercedes in the south west, BMW in the south east.
