Before this there was St Mary's, which was even bigger! We've kept the ruins of this one, and built a new one next door. Almost all trace of the enormous St Mary's is now lost. It was the only English cathedral destroyed in The Reformation. Ironically, St Michael is the patron saint of Germany.

  1. Wasn’t St. Michael’s also the largest parish church in England prior to it gaining cathedral status?

Apparently, St. Mary’s was meant to have resembled Lichfield Cathedral, only St. Mary’s was even bigger. It sure would’ve been a sight and a half. Also, it is said that Godiva and Leofric’s unexcavated tomb remains buried somewhere underneath the houses on Priory Row.

Coventry is probably one of my favourite cities when it comes to history, it’s just a shame so much of it is either lost or not very well known. Warwickshire truly was a powerhouse of a county right up until the war.
