Southeastern has announced that it will restore the frequency of the Victoria – Orpington line to every 15 minutes December this year.

We will also increase off-peak and evening stopping services between Victoria and Orpington via Herne Hill to provide trains every 15 minutes – enabling a ‘turn up and go’ Metro timetable.

However, there are still a number of routes where the service is still basically unusable during off-peak (worse than every 15 minutes) after the COVID cuts, for example:

  • Victoria – Selhurst – Sutton (previously every 15 minutes, now every 30 minutes)
  • Hounslow loop (between Waterloo and Barnes, previously every 7 / 8 minutes, now it is 8 / 22 minutes at Wandsworth Town)
  • Waterloo – Epsom (via Wimbledon) (previously every 30 minutes to both Guildford and Dorking, giving every 15 minutes between Waterloo – Epsom, now halved to useless frequency)
  • The Thameslink line between Kentish Town and Orpington, giving Blackfriars – Bromley South 4 trains per hour previously when combined with the Sevenoaks service
  • Northern City line (previously every 15 minutes on both Hertford loop and mainline via New Southgate, combined to provide 8 trains per hour from Moorgate, but now halved to useless frequency north of Alexandra Palace)

I would like to know how these service cuts have affected Londoners in general. Are people who live in affected region no longer travelling by trains, and resort to using private transport instead? Have you been put off from visiting family / friends in these regions because the train service is too bad?

  1. These frequency cuts particularly hurt suburb-to-suburb travel south of the river, as you’re forced to experience extremely long wait times at interchange stations. For example, train A is timetabled to leave Clapham Junction for Waterloo just as train B is timetabled to leave for a southwestern suburb. Both trains have a 2tph frequency, making the wait at Clapham Junction 30 minutes, when it would have previously been 15. A slow bus journey through traffic can actually get you to your destination earlier.
