  1. > John Hogan, 33, was sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison by Judge Martin Nolan, who described the attack as “particularly savage”.

  2. Bear in mind that’s pretty much as far ahead as it was since covid started. A shockingly short time

  3. Jail isn’t enough. Dump him out in the middle of the sea.

  4. >Judge Nolan said if the victim had died, the level of intention for a case of murder would have been satisfied.

Why wasn’t he charged with attempted murder then?

  5. Disgraceful sentence, he should have got 15/20 years for that savage attack. I’m disgusted but not surprised.

  6. Jesús. Dublín is overall still quite safe though, no? Going for a conference in October. Any areas to avoid?

  7. “”I suspect he won’t come to this country again,” said the judge”

    Nolan is mentally disabled, right?

  8. After the attack he should have went home and downloaded 1000s of images of child porn and he would be a free man now

  9. Only in the country. That poor man.

That is absolutely awful. 5 and a half years is nowhere near enough either for attacking a random person on the street with a machete.

  10. Helen will be out to tell us how safe Dublin is any moment now

Jaysus wept. And this is with the party of “Law and Order” in charge

  11. I wonder how the powers that be would respond if an ordinary member of the public were to have a go at one of these perpetrators and send them to meet their maker?

  12. “Counsel said Hogan had written a letter of apology, which would be “cold comfort” to the injured party.

The court heard that Hogan has a history of addiction to alcohol and drugs but has undergone counselling.

Mr Moher said that when Hogan was stable, he engaged in voluntary work.

Hogan has a good work history as a bricklayer and a driver for a large supermarket chain, the court heard.

He also has five children aged between three and 15.”

Seems like a sound family man, and handy with a knife.

  13. 29 previous public order convictions, including carrying a knife. If only there were signs he was violent and armed.

  14. This is insane! Judge Nolan is absolutely useless!

I’ve often felt a judge penalizes based on the scope of the law – they have to satisfy the justification for a sentence I.e. they can’t just sentence someone to 50 years. So my mind set has been we need to revise our legal system so we can adequately penalize offenses.

But this is the exact opposite! What the actual f*ck is this sentence? Are our prisons full and they’re Looking to avoid long sentences or something? He’s clearly a danger to society – What Irish man has any need to own a machete?!

I hate the whole notion of “send a message”, but let punishment fit the crime… at least! It invariably “sends a message”.

  15. I suspect he won’t come to this country again,” said the judge

Hit the nail on the head there Nolan, let the domestic terrorist off easy and they get exactly what they want when people stop coming here, he’ll be praised as a saint by his circle when he gets out.

I’m sure he could’ve gone harder with the sentencing but that might be too much paperwork or interfere with his golfing plans later

  16. I swear Judge Nolan is one of those Energy Vampires that feeds off people’s frustration.

  17. a judge will need to be attacked before lenient sentences are addressed

  18. 29 convictions ffs. should have seen the full eight years at minimum. disgusting sentence once again and an attack on democracy and decency.

Man should have a right to sue the state. I’d imagine there was fuck all gardai as per usual on the street that evening.

  19. He was convicted of section 3 assault causing harm. Surely it’s a section 4 Assault causing serious harm? If that’s not serious harm what the fuck is?
