My name is Sam Ooghe. I’m a former freelance HLN journalist. I used to write about criminal cases for the regional pages in Ghent and het Meetjesland (which I didn’t always like). Later on, I spent some time in the Brussels/Asse offices as well, to write about more general and political topics for HLN (which I really did like). Always wanted to become a Wetstraatjournalist, but seeing political journalists working with my own eyes in Asse, that idea lost all magic and I abandoned the plan.
Currently, I’m a Humo journalist. I mainly do lengthy interviews (recently: Yanis Varoufakis, kardinaal Jozef De Kesel, Rudi Vranckx, Walter Damen,…) and ‘dossiers’ about topics that deserve some more depth (fertility problems, studentendopen, pediatric cancer, oniomania, the gamification of everyday life…). Doing an AMA as I’m seeing that 50% of the topics discussed eventually become debates about journalism/media/HLN comment sections. Saw some AMA requests as well, sometimes. As a young journalist, I think I could provide some modest insight in everyday life in media. I’m open to any question: about media, clickbait/sensationalism/paywalls, what it’s like working in journalism/HLN/Humo, whether it’s any fun, or about specific topics that I’ve written about (ex. the working conditions of delivery drivers and how to find people like sans-papiers).

Hoe hard weegt de redactie door op artikels om de toon van het blad/krant “correct” te houden? aka is er veel beinvloeding hoe/wat je schrijft over bepaalde onderwerpen?
1. What do you think of the black-practices HLN/DPGMedia is utilizing with their own affiliation platforms? Example, a lot of panic articles about energy prices that are mostly pointing people to their own energy comparison website MijnEnergie.be . One of the articles was even creating chaos by telling people to immediately look up “vaste contracten” as they only had 3 days left while everyone knows that these Energy providers change these “vaste prijzen” variables almost daily.
2. How do people react when you tell them you wrote for HLN?
3. Why did you leave HLN for Humo?
4. Why does it feel that the media tries to blow up the importance of Antwerpen so much while most of the country could not give two shits?
How are titles chosen? Are they intended to rile up people and be misleading? Does HLN realise the damage they do?

Is men bij HLN er een zich van bewust van de impact van hun comment section ? Zeker op sociale media is dat een vat vol polarisatie. De moderatie daarop is minimaal, maar m.i. heb je als krant toch de verantwoordelijkheid om dit onder controle te houden.

– What’s your opinion on the behaviour of Humo on Facebook? A lot of their headlines during the Covid crisis were not giving clear answers to clickbait questions in the title and were seemingly spreading misinformation (Does Ivermectin help? Etc.). Linking to a paywall article in that case is imo spreading misinformation/doubt on the current guidelines and vaccines.
– To which length can we allow antivax articles? Like the article of Peter Van De Begin. I remember that the journalist mainly kept asking open questions without giving a factual critcal response to false statements. This was something Humo used to do in interviews and seemingly becomes less and less.
– There was an incident with a youngster with an air gun (?) lately. In HLN, there were immediately 3 pages on how the youngster possibly had mental health issues. Do you think the same thing would happen if the youngster was named Mohamed? This with the reactions on Jurgen Conings and the refusal of multiple people to call him a terrorist.

considering your interest in politics, do you often get frustrated with politicians talking around the issue or presenting the issue disingenious?
How easy is it to get my story in the paper, how many bullshit stories do you guys disregard, and how many do actually become published?
Hoe voelt het om bepaalde zaken te onderzoeken waar je eigenlijk tegen bent? Voorbeeld: Versoepeling van de euthanasiewet terwijl je er zelf tegen bent.
Wat is jouw mening over de manier waarop de meer informele kranten (zoals bijvoorbeeld HLN) werken met de balans tussen *correcte* journalistiek en *entertaining* journalistiek?
Een extra woordje uitleg om zeker te zijn dat mijn vraag correct wordt geinterpreteerd: men vindt soms voorbeelden van journalistiek die vrij sensationeel is, en waar de drang naar entertainment duidelijk primeert op de correctheid van informatie alsook het respect naar de personen die in het artikel worden besproken. Wat is jouw mening over dit fenomeen, en welke verantwoordelijkheden hebben de redacties en de journalisten hieromtrent?
In welke mate word je geconfronteerd met de politieke stroming/oorsprong van de werkgever waarvoor je werkt? Merk je dit aan jouw collega (bv: is de werkomgeving bij Humo linkser dan die bij HLN?)

Hoeveel aandacht wordt er besteed aan het checken van artikels?
How do you feel about the lake of ethic as journalist ?
How do you know you went too far asking some questions, making choices on what you will show, playing with the words to make a better topic rather than the truth as it really is ?
As someone who studies medicine this is a personal interest of mine: do you guys have access to people who can answer technical questions on particular subjects? Currently a lot of science journalism just gets basic stuff really wrong and doesn’t investigate further so whenever you, as a lay person, start digging you realise it’s often a lot more complicated. Obviously one person can’t know everything and you have limited time, but do you have people on call, like a lawyer when there’s a law stuff that happens to explain the TL;DR, a doctor to explain a complex topic, a solicitor when it’s about the housing market etc. Or is it just “lol no deal with it” when you have a subject you know nothing about?

De publieke opinie over de journalistiek is niet al te best, mede aangestuurd door politici die dat wantrouwen extra aanwakkeren (fake news, linkse leugenpers, etc.)
1. Merk je als journalist een vijandelijker klimaat tegenover je beroep?
2. Wat zijn de grootste misvattingen over de journalistiek?
Ik wilde ook altijd journalist worden, maar uit vrees voor de werkgelegenheid de studie niet aangevat. Is print dood en hoe zie jij persoonlijk de toekomst in?
Humo maakt veel reclame met grote kortingen waar ik me wel eens de vraag stel of dit hun winst niet negatief beïnvloedt.
Daarnaast, merk je een groot verschil tussen werken voor een weekblad (Humo) en werken voor een dagblad (HLN), gelet op de druk om de deadline te bereiken?

2. How do you feel about the current journalistic degrees? Do they properly prepare people for the work as a journalist or are there improvements to be made?
3. What’s your opinion on free press vs. press with subscription? Or is the main income source of newspapers not that dependent on subscribers?
4. Any interesting future predictions about journalism as a whole? New ways to consume media, certain trends in consumers, …
5. How do you decide which topics deserve a more in-depth look? Personal preference, hinted at by Humo or any other deciding factors?
I guess you were full of dreams when learning journalism at the university. How hard was the reality check when you ended up working for HLN?
Ik weet dat de vergoedingen in de media niet overal navenant zijn. Hoe voorkom je uitbuiting als startende journalist?
Were you ever pressured to write an article or title that you knew was misleading?
Werd je ooit onder druk gezet om een artikel of titel te schrijven waarvan je wist dat het misleidend was?
Hoe geloofwaardig is de mainstream media nog?
Hoe worden columnisten opgepikt? Ik ken jonge mensen die meteen na hun bachelor in de journalistiek aan de slag konden als vaste columnist bij een tijdschrift, zonder een of andere specialisatie te hebben in een bepaald onderwerp, of zich elders hebben bewezen als auteur oid. Ik wil niet te snel ‘connecties’ roepen, maar…
Dat een gevestigde auteur als Herman Brusselmans of een econoom als Geert Noels een column krijgt begrijp ik, of je nu fan bent of niet. Gastinzendingen van iemand met een specifieke ervaring begrijp ik ook. Maar ik erger me dood aan vaste columns van jonge twintigers die nooit [dit format](https://degladiool.nl/elke-column-ooit/) overstijgen. Drie paragrafen lullen over hun avond wijnen met de vrienden, er een filosofische overpeinzing aan koppelen zoals Jayden Smith er wel twintig heeft op een uur, en factureren maar.
