In 1952,a closed trial was held in Moscow over 16 members of a literary circle of students who distributed leaflets about the undemocratic nature of the Soviet electoral system. Three were sentenced to capital punishment, three to 10 years in the camps, the remaining 10 people to 25 years in prison.

  1. Stalin was pretty desperate to purge the opposition of the system. Didn’t live long enough to actually succeed. Many, including CIA directors at the time, think that the USSR would still be with us today had he succeeded.

  2. First of all, I think it’s awful. But you have to try and see this from the perspective of this era: millions of dead people, the USSR recovering from the war, the cold War brewing…

    A lot of people suffered in both sides during these times. Hell, the people of Cuba are still suffering from the consequences of the US blockade…
