>The most important European allies, like Britain, France and Germany, have not firmly committed to spending at least 2 percent or more long term, while 2.5 percent or even 3 percent is what European defense really needs.
And Germany announced cuts.
>a $7.25 billion increase in the 2025 defense budget was reduced to $1.3 billion
>Keir Starmer, arrived at the summit saying that Britain would reach 2.5 percent, but he did not say when.
Nevuary 13st.
>“European armies are too small to handle even the arms that they’ve got now,” said Jim Townsend, a former U.S. assistant secretary of defense now at the Center for a New American Security.
>“The British and the Danes, to pick two examples, are good militaries, but they would not be able to sustain intense combat for more than a couple of weeks,” he said. “It doesn’t matter how good you are if there aren’t enough of you.”
This is unlikely to change without conscription. Joining the military in Europe has been out of fashion for decades. Even Ukraine is having trouble getting enough troops.
Asthe article states, equipment, weapons, and ammo are an even bigger problem.
European countries can do the really hard part already, that of designing, developing and building the complete range of modern weapons from builds to fighters to nuclear submarines. What’s missing is the coordination and commitment to defend the continent. And it will always be impossible with people like Orbán or Le Pen or Trump or the Brexitters sabotaging everyone’s safety for their own selfish interests.
Without a real european political union (abolition of nation states) we will hardly see a european army. This is the harsh reality unfortunately
Unfortunately behind a paywall, but the title is true. We do not need usa or anyone else. Inb4 paid yankee trolls claiming I am paid russian troll: we don’t need russia either.
What happened to not editorializing the title? For those who don’t know, the original article title is “How Can Europe Reduce Its Military Dependency on the United States?”
Lol, the reality is that high cost of energy is forcing companies to move outside Europe, innovation is further taking a backseat because of increase in defence spending, and this is causing de-industrialisation in the continent as we speak. Trump coming to power will mean more EU contribution for their own security needs (which should be the case anyway) – and that will further reduce budget for research, innovation and infrastructure. Don’t mean to be too cynical but care to explain how a united Europe will solve any of these problems?
