My $5 is on future nature beating our preparations for the future for however many rounds we can last until knockout.
Until there is no longer time to recover between disasters.
Houston, Texas as a recent example. 4 weeks before hurricane Beryl, a derecho had passed through that very region with 100pmh wind gusts.
Pasts of northeast Texas (Texarkana?) has been seeing heavy rains and flooding almost ever other day since the end of April. The derecho and the hurricane also passed through that region.
This will become the norm and far sooner than anyone seems to realize.
Preparation? LOL wut?! Most countries, but especially the U.S. has spent the last 4 decades dismantling any preparations, hardening or improvements and updates to its infrastructure.

Spoiler: they won’t. One political party openly denies there is an issue and is shrieking “drill baby drill” as we speak.
Then their cities will flood, their grids will fail, people will die, and they’ll run their next election on a platform of “keeping out the other guys so we can fix our state problems”.
Rinse/repeat until civilization ends.
