Ocasio-Cortez Warns of ‘Enormous Peril’ if Democrats Push Biden Aside – Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said the idea of having an open Democratic convention where candidates would compete for the nomination was “crazy.”

  1. How do they campaign against each other. Any negative would be an absolute disaster.

  2. If Biden is pushed out, the endorsements from all the top Dems need to be behind the same replacement. The party needs to be united before the convention.

  3. Clyburn likes the idea. While he thinks Harris would do well and he would support her, he wants to hear from different democratic state governors as well.

    >”I would support that absolutely. We can’t close that down, and we should open up everything for the general election. … there will definitely be other candidates.”

  4. She’s right that they need to have a concrete plan in place. There doesn’t seem to be any discussion of that behind the scenes.

  5. The party will unite once the person nominated is set in stone. Hopefully.

  6. So if Biden drops out who picks the nominee?

We won’t be able to have a primary before early voting starts.

So do the party elite and the mega donors now just get to choose the nominee?

If so that’s fucked and I don’t support that.

  7. I’m all over the map on this one. I started off with thinking replacement is a pipe dream, that we are too late, and that it’s not likely to end up improving our chances.

Then I came to decide Biden should drop out because the optics are insurmountable. We need to put our best foot forward and Biden doesn’t appear to be that.

But now I’m ready to just stick with Biden and move on. Especially when rich fucks are trying to force Biden out by withholding their money. Rich people need to fuck off from politics. Don’t want to get to a place where the rich think they can override primary votes going forward.

  8. This is unbearable. We sat and watched the Republican Party eat eachother alive for the past 3 years until its crunch time and now the democrats can’t get it together for the next 4 months when the future of our country and our world relies on it.

  9. Yeah an open convention is going to lead to all the rich Dem. mega-donors trying to buy the most corporate friendly shitty centrist pick that Democratic money can buy. They want their guy. Remember the wealthy mega donors may be helping the Democratic cause but they’re not necessarily our friends.

I wish Harris was polling obviously better than Biden but her poor performance in them is a tough spot.

  10. This is turning into when your Mom is trying to finish your science project a day before it’s due.

They had four fucking years to figure this shit out. We deserve the hell we get if Trump wins based on this ineptitude.

  11. I do not understand this fear at all. Every single Democrat I know cares WAY more about beating Trump than any potential candidate. People might have a favorite going into the convention but are people really so attached to *potential* replacements already that the party couldn’t rally immediately? Like who cares, the thing we need is someone who can deliver the message.

  12. Are the democrats trying to go down in history as the most incompetent political operation the world has seen?

These fucking morons are going to be remembered as the idiots that couldn’t stop the fascist take over of the country by the dumbest biggest fucking degenerate humanity has to offer.

  13. It happened in 1968 when Lyndon Johnson dropped out of the race. RFK was the frontrunner until he was assassinated. The convention- in Chicago that year, l might add- was an absolute madhouse. That’s why Nixon was elected president.

  14. Interesting to see r/politics go against Bernie AND AOC in the span of a few hours.

  15. People seem to forget that AOC said herself that replacing Biden with a new person would open a legal gray area with courts and the GOP is already waiting to contest the election results (it’s been done before for Bush)

We KNOW the GOP will do this if they get the chance and we KNOW the Supreme Court would award the election to Trump.

They made him immune for fucks sake. We just gotta stick it out. The polls are misleading and there is another smear campaign to devide the Dems. We just need to support Biden or Harris.

  16. I’m paying close attention to what AOC and Bernie say.

Opening the convention will simply assure that it becomes a buyer’s market, where “buyers” = mega donors who want to control the direction and policies of the Party.

Keep Biden or don’t keep Biden. The damage of being seen by everyday folks as a party that obsesses on personality and makes leadership decisions based on polling, pundits, and media has already been done. But if we’re gonna dump Biden, we sure as hell better not even entertain public discussions about dumping Harris. No one in their right mind would believe that either of those decisions comes from the ground up. In the US, only big money is allowed to make those kind of quarterly bottom line decisions, and voters will recoil from the stench of the assertion of privilege.

  17. I didn’t really get that energy. She seemed neutral on Biden or Harris, she just warned of many issues with throwing a completely random candidate in a couple months before the voting starts, and like less than two months before candidates HAVE to be selected to meet deadlines on the ticket. Republican orgs have made it clear they’ll Stall any attempt too. We don’t want the dem candidate to not even be on the ballot.

  18. Thank God AOC is saying this about the open convention idea. Way too many people don’t realize what an awful and chaotic idea that is. I’d rather stick with Biden if that is the alternate road.

  19. All of Britain and France managed a whole election in a month. Forget the media circus and do your job.

  20. It’s wild to me that a highly reliable DC insider who is professional, highly informed and intelligent is like “there is no plan, this is a bad idea” and comments on the internet are like “respectfully disagree” like ok you know more than her????

  21. I think she’s right here. I’ll admit I don’t usually agree with a lot of what she has to say but I think she’s right. An open convention isn’t a good idea. We have primaries for a reason and an open convention would be insane. If dems go down that path then we should just eliminate primaries

  22. I can’t believe I’m saying this… but maybe we should look at the French

  23. Look, maybe, just maybe, the time for this was, you know, during the fking PRIMARY.

  24. Ever wonder if the dem leadership is in on it, and there never was a two party system…..

  25. Ultimately it will be Biden’s choice, I think he will step down. And I think it will give the Democrats a boost. Big news good or bad is good.

  26. The entire sequence of events between the Biden-Trump debate and present day has been like an unbelievable hurricane. We had insanity in the Supreme Court and nobody has even digested that. It seems so deeply improbable that a shooter would be able to just barely graze Trump between them and the RNC convention where Trump’s VP was almost kind of picked out of a hat at the last possible minute.

Stories about Biden and his status as a candidate, by definition of the magnitude of events that have been occurring in the meantime, are manufactured nonsense. Personally I would like to see him step aside but this is the most manufactured crisis I have ever seen. This is insanity. Every bit of modern politics has become complete insanity. Assassination attempts don’t even make it through a full week news cycle. It’s impossible for our country to exist like this. Things are breaking.

  27. Not if we can get people on the same page behind closed doors about who our options should be. Find two to three people that won’t suck/poll better than Biden, and then pick them and have Harris be their VP to even further simplify things(her numbers are worse than Biden’s so she can’t be the nominee).

Is this the way it should be done? No. Is this the best solution given the cards we’ve been dealt? Yes.

  28. Does anyone else feel that Kamala could’ve sounded the alarm on Biden earlier, but found it advantageous to let other people figure it out when it was too late to have a proper primary? I mean she had to have seen that he was slipping but she also could’ve realized that she would’ve struggled in primary due to very recent experience in 2020
