The one in my town is always pretty active (or it was pre-COVID). They also offer classes (like self defense, cooking, crafting, acting, music…) for children and teenagers and host concerts, summer camps and so on.
Sure, why not?
They have regular activities, you can rent them out for events etc.
For example the German breakdancing scene is quite strongly rooted in youth centers.
Me and my friends used to hang out there all the time when we were teenagers. Mainly because it was right near our Sportpark, so we could go there to relax, get a drink and play pool and video games on the Wii there.
I believe one of their intents is to keep problematic children and youth from the streets by offering them a save place to hang out.
I don’t think this works. I knew one group that went to one on a regular basis, but they were the opposite of trouble makers anyway.
Pre COVID I regular went youth clubs for live bands. 3-5 bands for 5 bucks. Hope they will continue soon.
As far as I know they work pretty good. Sure, not all kids go there, but those that tend to hang out on the streets often use them to play, hang out and access support.
Prevention is l unglamorous work.
Yes. Think of them perhaps as community centres, just with a certain age group in mind.
Went to a youth club every Friday to play ping pong with a good friend, that was more than 10 years ago. The other day I just met someone at kickboxing sparring who casually told me that she’s giving courses in that same youth club (that was 2019). Yes, they are alive and well.
I know some that are pretty active but I don’t know if all of them are that way
yes they are.
the smaller the city the more important they get. at least thats what i found out.
they are mainly a place for youths to meet without financial hurdles to jump through first.
When I was a kid I was scared of those places because they were inhabited by the angry problem Kids. Maybe that was only the case in the town I grew up in, but one single encounter ruined the idea of these places for me
They should
Dude that literally the city i live in , i can step out of my hous and walk few meters and then i‘m there
I used one every two weeks with my DnD group. Then came rona
back in the 90s it was the place to hang out for magic:tg and warhammer gamer
I personally never saw one from the inside, so I’d say no. Might be a skewed perspective though.
I never went to one and knew no one who went there, but the one close to my parents house had bikes infront of it everytime I went by (I couldnt look into the building because of a hedge). So I guess they are used and I think they are a good thing, especially in areas with social problems, but also everywhere else where young people life.
We have a big one around my place, with also an LGBT-Club that I visit every 2 weeks. Many different activities you could do there but after the reconstrction of the place its just bland and makes me sad to look at, I remember when it was all green outside but now its just another heartless concrete floor.
When I was a teenager me and my friends were always there. Nice, cheap food, games, a disco, football, occasional trips somewhere, very cool staff. We all loved it.
When I was kid they usually were pretty much run by the immigrant kids who reigned with absolute power and an iron fist. The boomer social workers there had seemingly no interest in protecting weaker kids like myself. Maybe it changed since then but back in my days it was pretty dangerous to go there.

I’m a 80s and 90s kid and when I was growing up the local Haus Der Jugend was a place to avoid at all costs if you weren’t a chain-smoking hooligan looking to beat up kids like me. Sometimes they had the local teenager bands play there and the *one* time I went, someone did beat me up in the bathroom for having long hair, proving my suspicions correct lol.
In my experience not. I was never at such a place and also dont know anyone who was there at some time.
I think its kinda a relict from ten or twenty years ago (atleast in bigger cities)
Different for all cities / villages.
That one actually looks pretty decent. They aren’t hugely popular but they offer many events and are sometimes a better place to hang out than at home. So yeah, ours unfortunately looks even a bit more depressing than the one in the pic but still they really try to do their best. The “Rollerpark” behind it is shit but it’s better than none at all.
Looks like the town Düren, or?
I grew up in a rather small town, which had a “Juge” (Jugendtreff) consisting of 6 containers. I have read in the comment section that many Jugendtreffs offer Clubs, activities, trips, food etc. This was not the case in my town. It was mostly used by the kind of juvenile you wanted to stay far away from as a kid. No Smoking/Drinking rules were broken frequently, violence wasn’t uncommon and the behaviour of the teens were pretty much unexeptable. It was pretty much a nightmare for anyone who wasn’t an actual criminal or some hooligan that didn’t feel wanted at home.
In fact, my mom worked there for a while but she quit that long ago because it was just too much to handle and the juveniles started threatening her for even trying to enforce the rules.
I live in a small city and do a lot of voluntary work in my Jugendhaus as an event technician, working the PA and light systems.
As far as I can tell mine and all the Jugendtreffs I know are fairly active. The house is open for secondary grade student during the day and all kind of activities for older people are taking place during the evening. Weekends are for concerts and other events, or you can rent the house for a private event.
Just walk in and ask what they have on offer.
Me and my friends never went there.
In my town it’s just used by teenagers for partying, doing drugs etc.
When I was younger (like 12 to 14) we used to hang around the o e in my village, play billiard and wii and listen to music on full blast.
There was also a cupboard to buy chocolate (quite a small place) and drinks and such.
Yeah for kids to discover the wonderful world of underage drinking, doing Ecstasy mid-week and if they get accepted by the older members, they end up doing Heroine. So Yeah, unfortunately they get used often.
In my town this was always a place to avoid during teenage years. It was always full of mainly turkish and afghan teens with severe anger problems. They didn’t want any germans in there and would beat you up if you step foot on “their property” as they saw it. The kind of guys that would freak out and start a knife fight because you apparently looked at them wrongly.
I’d bet a lot of those guys are still criminals or serve prison time right now.
Would’ve been great if there would’ve been a place like this where peaceful people and germans are welcome too.
I think they are normally used for dealing drugs like weed, pills etc.
What I would have given to have one of these…
We played Magic at the hidden corners of the super market restaurant. Greasy tables, no sleeves back then.
The jugendtreff off our town Looks cringe on the outside but is pretty chill on the inside with billiardtables, a ps4, kitchen
If you a poor than yes
In my experience: yes. Especially in low income areas. Often times it’s the only place where younger people can hang out without getting shooed away.
I never used them. lmao
In my small City (13k) our Jugendtreff is more active than it looks like from the outside. If you don’t know there is any activity you would think it’s always closed. But the audience is to young. The Teens that could really benefit from activities don’t get any and they’re going to do dumb stuff in the streets. In my old small village was one, with activities for all ages. I was there like every day. You could have lunch there super cheap for like cents and there was arts and crafts for the younger and Darts, Billard and Videogames for the older. It was a blast. And everyone would have known each other.
Back in late 90s/early 2000s we used to trade and play Pokémon and later yo-gi-oh cards with other kids in a place just like that. Great times 🙂

Ours was excellent. Some people have mentioned “problem children” and there were definitely some kids from rough homes, but in the end I think that was a huge asset for everyone. We got to hang out with kids that were maybe outside of our immediate socio-economic class, which imo really helped us to become become more compassionate and informed adults. Granted the staff was truly excellent and made sure to foster a safe environment for everyone, while also giving everyone enough space to keep coming back.
