There’s a man in India who is singlehandedly trying to preserve as much of the native rice strains as he can. He can only grow a square meter of each type because there are so many. But he does have a few varieties that can grow in brackish water and are relatively salt-tolerant. I wonder if someone there can find him.
We have the same issue in France in the Camargue region where rice is also cultivated. It’s also a huge risk for the biodiversity with all the birds migrating or living there since they nest into freshwater habitats near the coast.
Sounds like groundwater depletion allowing salt water infiltration.
