I wrote a blog post about 13 places you must see in Belgium

  1. Great. I have visited most of the places you listed but I’ll give a shot to lier and one of the nature sites.

  2. Small correction: Durbuy is said to be the smallest *city* in the world, not village. That wouldn’t be particularly interesting otherwise, even though it’s untrue either way.

  3. Castles of Waltzin & Castle of Vesves : You cannot visit Waltzin, it’s a private castle. What you can do though is visit the Reserve naturelle de Furfooz that is in between the Chateau de Vesves and Chateau de Waltzin, there are amazing landscapes to see from there.

Chateau de Freyr : It’s indeed an amazing place, soon to potentially be broken by the return of the train line from Dinant to Givet. But the best point of view over it is not the one you give which is a bit further away toward Hastiere. The best one is when you go from Anseremme to Falmignoul, the last parking zone while going uphill, climb the few stairs and voila.

Abbaye de Villers la ville is indeed amazing, but it’s not the only one. Abbaye d’Aulne is pretty nice too, way less crowded.

The Hobbit House : Don’t go there in the summer, it’s OVER crowded. The Domaine de Chevetogne is free entrance from November to March ( albeit it changes as of 2022 and will have an off season entry price ). The whole place is amazing to visit, not just that Hobbit house.

On that blog, you are missing a lot, but like really a lot. You could mention in Dinant the Maison Leffe or the Abbaye of Leffe. You also don’t even mention that Dinant is the birthplace of Adolf Sax, whom invented the Saxophone and a big part of the city revolves around that. You could mention Maredsous Abbey as well, hell, you don’t even mention any of our Trappist places, Chimay and the Castle of the Prince/Abbey, Orval and it’s wonders. Rochefort would deserve to be on that spot too.

Not even a mention of Bastogne and all the sites of the Battle of the Bulge.

  4. Well done! I lived in Waterloo for a few years and now wish I had your recommendations during that time – definitely some places in your list that I regret not seeing. Congratulations on some beautiful photos!

  5. Very cool blog, you reminded me of a place I used to go when I was a kid: Chevtogne. I think I need to go there to see how it has changed in 30 years lol
