It’s not so much that it was a dud, since his base will eat up anything he says, but that for once there were high expectations of Trump going into the convention. There was wind in his sails because of the debate and the attempt on his life. He had a chance to deliver any kind of noteworthy speech, whether it was a fake attempt to heal divisions or an unhinged attack, but it was like a lower energy version of his rallies and full of his usual ramblings. He is past his peak

If Trump was a Democrat, the Democratic leadership would be in a panic, magnifying this so that it reduced his support within the party.
But the GOP isn’t going to throw their guy under the bus, and the average MAGA cheerleader won’t care about this at all.
Dems should take note and respond similarly to their own problems. Dems pour gas on small fires while fooling themselves into believing that this is somehow virtuous or smart, when it is neither. Maybe when he lost the last time, his peaceful transition of power to the winning candidate gained him more voters? Maybe being found guilty of being a rapist boosted his chances? Then again, being found guilty of misappropriation of corporate assets to pay off a porn actress to commit adultery, then deducting the proceeds off his taxes won him supporters from the christain nationalist and The Family at the national prayer breakfast, and the District Court of NY. Maybe after losing the election and collecting donations to “Stop the Steal,” and keeping the proceeds curried favor from individuals that wouldn’t support him prior too. Then again he did make all those appointments of individuals that were unqualified to receive those positions, like the Department of Education and the Department of Labor, let alone the AG and the SC…
