“But in the winter solar farms produce almost no electricity in Britain. This is because it is dark for around 16 hours a day and when the Sun does appear it is weak and usually hidden behind thick cloud. Solar energy may make sense in some countries, for example the countries of North Africa, but building solar farms in Britain is completely brainless”
This is complete bullshit. Solar is capable & needed in winter. They do produce less energy due to fewer sunlight hours but they on average lose only around 25% of their efficiency
Annoyingly I have watched the government try their hardest to install ‘battery sites’ on protected green belt land.
Just seems like the government don’t care anymore, use green belt for houses or whatever they feel like. Wasting potential farmable fields for this seems wrong.
Because of our crazy insistence on net zero while exporting all our energy production to offset carbon emissions?
All while there are massive oil reserves that can be used for energy while we transition to nuclear and renewable?
Solar and wind are stupidly expensive ways to generate electricity and we’re wondering why our bills are going up. The problem is they do not generate enough energy for the cost. People who advocate for solar and wind are either stupid, or they have invested in a solar panel production.
Yep.
Covering arable/pasture/woodland with solar panels that give 20% if you’re lucky in winter and zero at night is about the most stupid decision possible for powering the grid.
Solar + batteries make sense if you are in a canal boat, or otherwise very much off grid – when you have virtually no other options.
For an installed site – utterly utterly stupid.
You don’t have to be a scientist to understand solar in the UK isn’t the best idea.
Wind however would be much better, given we are a naturally more windy country, both onshore and offshore would be beneficial to the UK.
But the Tories opposed onshore wind.
With every renewable technology, they don’t provide a sustainable source of electricity as they rely on nature, so there will always need to be a backup source and a source that come go up and down quickly, like nuclear.
The usual tripe spewed out by anti environmentalists to argue against any progress. “But, but, in the winter there is no sun…. wind only works… when its windy”. Yes, that is why we need a mix of clean a renewable energy sources, not abandon them all on individual issue. Nuclear, tidal, wind, hydro, solar. And do you know what… if there are issues with storage and capacity, we overcome them with innovation, because that is what progress actually is. We could even sell that shit to other countries, because thats what rewards progress and innovation.
“But, but whatabout China.” Ok China is building coal power plants, so we should too…. lets just say fuck it and join them the, because we want smog and shitty air too. Or do we go all in on gas…. because it burns cleaner. And fuck up our energy security and need to forever be reliant an Putin and the middle east.
“But, but the cost”….. thats why its called investment. We invest for the future and all the progress that comes with it.
Reposting this, because my last one got downvoted by closed minded greenies who can’t be bothered to look up readily available data. READ THIS FIRST: Bottom row, third from left chart – look at solar: [https://www.gridwatch.templar.co.uk/](https://www.gridwatch.templar.co.uk/)
