The Dangerous Politics of Climate Engineering The idea that humans can manipulate the Earth to reduce the risks of climate change relies on and perpetuates a futile sense of human control and domination over our planet.

  1. If there is one defining characteristic of humans is their power to shape  their habitat.

We change and shape the environment around us to fit our needs.

Sure some species do some modification of their habitat, but no species does it to the extent we do.

When there was a few millions of us the changes we made to our local habitats were insignificant relative to  most natural cycles.

Now that there are 7 billion  of us, the rather large changes we make to our local habitats accumulate  causing unintended changes to our global habitat.

Humanity can and most definitely has exerted enough  change to  overtake   natural cycles and set the whole planet on a human controlled regime.

Can humanity alter the course of the climate regime we are creating for ourselves? Can we create a global habitat suitable for the continued progress or our species?

I believe so. But it won’t happen all by itself. It will require planning, cooperation and a great effort.

Let by itself, the natural thing to happen is a global habitat collapse.

  2. 200 years of polluting our planet is what we are up against. That’s a lot of effort to overcome.
