Ukrainian soldiers capture a Russian T-62 ‘turtle’ tank along with its crew near Klishchiivka, Donetsk Oblast. Soldiers from the 22nd Merchanized Brigade disabled the tank using FPV drones and then rounded up its crew. Aerial drone footage shot by the Ukrainian military and published on June 17 showed the tank being captured in a wooded area along with a Russian crew. Kyiv’s forces then rode on top of the tank and waved a Ukrainian as they returned to their base. The bizarre-looking Russian battlefield vehicle shows how troops are trying to adapt to the constant threat of drone attacks. The vehicle, built from a ramshackle, rusted T-62 tank, was modified to have a boxy metal shell as its exterior, a cage at its rear and electronic warfare devices attached to it. Soldiers say it was used to shuttle around food, ammunition and troops despite the threat of drone attacks, particularly from cheaply-produced “FPV” drones that blow up on impact. Its gun turret was so old and rusty it did not function. Nearly 28 months since Russia launched its full-scale invasion, the use of drones by both sides has become ubiquitous on the battlefield, making it difficult to advance or operate. On the other side of the frontline, Ukrainian gunners use an old Soviet anti-aircraft cannon to hunt Russian reconnaissance drones gathering intelligence in the Donetsk region. Yet more footage shows another Russian ‘turtle tank’ on the receiving end of a FPV drone strike. Video taken by the Shadow Group reveals how it was destroyed. The tank – covered in armour and armed with a mine plough – was captured rolling at speed across the battlefield in Ukraine. But all the additional protection failed to save it from Ukrainian mines. The tank was hit by several explosions, and the crew forced to flee. Another was blown up by soldiers of the 2nd batallion of the National Guard. Video shows the tank being hit by a drone or anti-tank rocket in Kreminna. A third was destroyed by FPV drones flown by the TERRA unit. Russia began creating ‘turtle tanks’ in March to overcome Ukrainian drones. They are made of a tank chassis with a metal ‘barn’ welded over the top. Sometimes a mine plough is attached to the front. This makes them slow, limits the vision of the crew and the rotation of the gun, but is designed to save them from precision strikes with FPV drones. #russia #ukraine #war
