Keir Starmer says there is ‘no silver bullet’ to end child poverty. KEIR Starmer said there is “no silver bullet” to end child poverty but that “it’s good that we’re having a debate” about the two-child benefit cap as he faces growing pressure for the measure to be dropped.

  1. Yeh, but don’t forget the free slice of toast for primary kids during term time in England.

  2. What’s the point of this new government. Absolutely everything from them has been either doubling down on Tory policy, issuing lies to defend Tory policy, or saying deviating from Tory policy is just too hard.

  3. According to the IFS, [once fully rolled out, the two-child limit will increase the number of children in child poverty by 500,000](https://ifs.org.uk/articles/two-child-limit-poverty-incentives-and-cost).

There is no single silver bullet to end child poverty. Ending it requires a benefit system that ensured no child was ever left in poverty and a leader who wouldn’t be “welcoming a debate about the benefit cap”, [whose spokespeople wouldn’t defend the policy and equivocate on its effect](https://www.thenational.scot/news/24457255.pat-mcfadden-whether-two-child-cap-causes-harm-is-open-debate/), but who would end the benefit cap *and* be committed to far more radical action. Instead? We have a man who doesn’t know whether he wants to keep a policy that’s driving more children into poverty.

  4. Labour’s idea of ending child poverty seems to be, enabling both parents to work full time at exhausting jobs to improve productivity.

Nobody seems to care about people’s quality of life and the upbringing the kids will receive.

Still Labour’s hit the ground running apparently.

    🥸🥸🥸

  5. Every time this guy opens his mouth I am amazed that he was ever a human rights lawyer.

  6. “We’ve tried nothing and we’re all out of ideas!”

  7. What a weak sauce response. But it’s to be expected.

  8. Step 1 Sell all the council houses.

Step 2 Allow mortgages x 4.5 joint salaries.

Step 3 Watch house prices and rent’s rocket.

Step 4 Enable both parents to work full time.

Step 5 Impose two child benefit cap.

    Bingo 🥳 Modern Britain 🇬🇧

  9. Already Labour are backtracking and shafting everyone.

  10. Scottish child payment costs £450m, so say £4-4.5bn for rUK. Clearly there is a price for poverty and it’s too big for Labour to consider.

  11. Politics is more important than poverty to this slimy fucker.

  12. Hey kids, look what’s on the table for dinner! Yes, it’s your favourite, a “good debate!”
