It falls on Western nations to provide the scientific research and funding for the kind of weapons that could transform the battlefield, he said.
After more than two years of conflict, the rapid expansion of drone warfare and electronic counter measures has had a profound impact on both sides’ tactics and strategy.
Gen Zaluzhny, wearing civilian clothes, did not specify what kind of weapons would be needed but said [more development was needed to prevent Ukraine losing the war.](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/russia-ukraine-war/)
“Evil is here and it has come to kill,” he said in his first public remarks since arriving in London.
“In the last century alone two conflicts, the First and [Second World Wars](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/second-world-war/) – separated by less than 20 years – killed more than 60 million people.”
“Is humanity ready to accept the next war on this scale of suffering? This time the Third World War?” he asked.
“Free and democratic nations and their governments need to wake up and think about how to protect their citizens and countries.”
He added: “The desire to survive on the battlefield is the main reason for the search to improve weapons.”
“For various reasons neither Ukraine nor Russia will be able to master these technologies alone.”
“But whoever masters them will decide the global security challenge.
“Who will master these technologies more quickly – the democratic world or the world of tyranny – will depend on us.”
Gen Zaluhzny warned that only by combining Ukrainian experience with Western resources could such breakthroughs be made and that “time is no longer on our side”.
He has previously called for a focus on weapons development, predicting in an article for the Economist, before he left the army, that only new technology would allow either side to make a decisive breakthrough on the battlefield.
Ukraine hasn’t gotten a lot of the US’s best and most advanced weapons.
With a couple exceptions, Ukraine is working with old NATO weapons stockpiled since the 70s-80s. Not that we don’t need to step up our game, as evidenced by the fact Russia has basically made US Excalibur GPS guidances systems obsolete.
Ukraine needs to target the radar complexes
Except NATO does not fight like Ukraine at all. Within weeks, any railroad, bridge, hub, communication centre, airfield or whatever is flattened. Any supply truck riding is hunted and shot. And that will collapse any front.
Is he joking? Lol
They need hundreds more Bradleys, but we also need to step our drone game up. No more million dollar drones, we need to mass produce 2k drones.
We need to find a solution for drones other than mass – China will outproduce NATO – still selling cheap tvs to us while they do so.
One thing is certain. If there’s money to be made, the Military Industrial Complex will meet the requirements.
West risks third world war unless it improves it’s balls.
Very insightful comments and reason for me to be here to rub elbows with some smart people/comments. I just hope that I am not naive thinking that US has already the technology but just afraid of facilitating to Ukraine because it will need SMEs on the ground for training and maintenance and that is already crossing the line and no to mention some advance weapons falling into China/Rushit hands for reverse engineering.
With the change of government in the US I believe this war will end soon.
When he’s right, he’s right.
As soon as these autocracies with their ambitious dictators, who all believe at some point that they must have their date with history, feel they have the advantage, feel more powerful, they will start a war.
As democracies we must always maintain some form of deterrence and to do so we must stay at the forefront of technology.
I don’t think so.
Russia, as we can see, is allready struggling aiganst Ukraine, who is dependent on help with material and man.
China does have the men power, able to draw 100 million into the grinder if needed. They got material.
They lack expertise.
They are not able to support its troops. They would have very long ways for the logistic. Compared to the Nato.
The US alone got around 750 bases around the world.
Other Nato members got bases.
We got 920 million humans, living in Nato countrys
Many if not all, countrys got laws that will draw in men and woman to fight.
The only way to defeat Nato.
Is to split Nato and make them go aiganst each other.
Nuclear winter is not worth it.
I would more likely expect, the brics states to stop trading with the West. Then only using and allowing other currency, trying to crash the dollar.
The west would fall into a deep recession and it would be very difficult. I really really hope, that those smart people we call government, already got plans.
When we look at what we import from brics states, we should make sure that we can compensate.
Like medication and other health related stuff.
I’m living in Germany, we pruduce more wheat then we can eat. That’s a good thing but even as a rich country, I don’t know if we where able to maintain everything.
Agree.
But would improving them with AI and automation bring rise to an AI uprising?
To be honest. Probably we are already 1/3 of the way there.
Russia can’t even get air superiority over Ukraine. To think that NATO would not roll through Russia is a bit absurd at this point.
There is no country today on the face of the earth that could afford to partake in a third World War. Today’s societies are not those of the first two world wars. Modern militaries are barely able to recruit enough people now to serve. Now imagine trying to implement a draft. Just look at the strain the russian economy is under just trying to fight 1 country right on their border. The next world war will not be fought with conventional arms. It will definitely involve some form of knocking out warring countries internet, computer systems and electric production and distribution. If that isn’t enough for everyone to lose their shit then the nukes will be broken out. All the more reason for putin and russia to be beaten back now.
