Got this 5 franc as change from the coop. I’ve never seen it before, is it a fake?

  1. its a comerative coin. the SNB will exchange it for the nominative value collectors wont pay much more due to the fact it was in circulation and not looking pristine anymore

  2. It’s a collectors coin as long as it’s flawlessly wrapped in its sealed cover.
It’s accepted at face value even by vending machines.

  3. Weird. They shouldn’t give you special coins as a change. But, it is legal tender and valued as much as the coin says: CHF 5.

You can exchange it at any bank, some banks sell these kind of coins, too. There are plenty of beautiful ones. The last one, was a CHF 50 with Roger Federer on it.

  4. Something similar happened to me once, got a special edition 5.- chf coin as change… googled it, turns out its worth 20.- chf. Thanks a bunch 😁

  5. It’s a “[Gedenkfünfliber](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_der_Schweizer_Gedenkf%C3%BCnfliber)”, which were issued yearly between 1974 and 1990 to commemorate various people and events. They’re legal tender worth CHF 5.00, but the collector’s value is usually higher than that, which is why they don’t often show up in circulation.

This particular one was issued to commemorate the ~~600-year anniversary of the Battle of Sempach~~ 100^th birthday of Ernest Ansermet.

  6. Somewhat related: You have probably realised that 10Rp and 20Rp coins can be pretty old. I think the oldes one I have is a 20Rp coin from 1891 or something. Crazy to think how much this coin went through and how it still manages to survive. I still have this coin and refuse to spend it.
