    Authorities in Moscow offered to pay a huge new bonus to recruits willing to join Russia’s war in Ukraine, the latest sign of mounting pressure to find enough replacements for troops killed and wounded on the battlefield.

    A decree issued Tuesday by Mayor Sergei Sobyanin pledged to pay 1.9 million rubles ($22,000) to volunteers who sign military contracts.

    The average monthly salary in the capital last year was about 139,000 rubles, according to Federal Statistics Service data.

  8. Depending on the region in Russia that is a life changing amount of money. Combined with pervasive domestic propaganda it’s no wonder how they can manage to recruit 30,000 troops per month.

    Of course the would-be soldier doesn’t know they’re going to be shipped off to the front line with limited training to become meat for the grinder. Those are just minor details.

    First, that is indeed an insane amount of money. Even in Moscow, the average salary is around $1200 per month. Which means that the person signing up makes as much money as he would make in almost two years – just by signing up.

    And second, for people asking “what’s the point in signing up if you have a high chance of dying?”. The payouts are already this insane because even this amount of money can’t lure enough people into signing up for the war. And according to some estimates, they are approaching [1.5% of Russia’s GRP](https://re-russia.net/review/760/)

    The payouts are designed to lure poor people living paycheck to paycheck with three mortgages, who see it as the only way to solve all their financial problems in life.

    But here’s the joke.

    That money could be spent on jobs, infrastructure, equipment, etc. But no, is instead spent on throwing bodies at the wall of death. The also shows how desperately short Putin is on people. Unless you literally see China step in and take up the war, Putin is basically done. He already worked through the warmongers, the prisoners, the mercenaries, and wilful foreign nations (thanks NK). Now he’s trying to bribe any remaining person to die.

  33. That is less than my enlistment bonus 10 years ago to go sit on my ass in Washington state for four years updating excel spreadsheets and once a year playing camp.

  35. Why would you ever think – even if you survived, which I think we all know the chances are slim – that you could come knocking with receipt in hand and they would pay? Lol

    They can offer whatever they want, as long as it’s believable. They hold all the cards, because they decide what is “true”. This is an important lesson for the world in the fragility and importance of truth.

  36. This is actually a lot of money and people should be concerned. Prior to the war (and tensions prior to that) Alaska was a huge source of Russian labor. They’d come in and risk their lives working on fishing vessels for 2-6 months to make roughly the same amount of money. 

    I can picture a lot of Russians taking up on this offer. 

  37. I know damn well that $22k isn’t upfront. It’s after 120 days or some shit where they know you will be dead and then your family just doesn’t get any money. They get a sack of onions instead. No more Lada’s either

  38. More like a lottery has a jackpot of $22,000 if you win. And to win you have to not get killed while rushing a Ukrainian trench with a broken chopstick as your weapon.

  42. Let me guess: they’re only eligible for the cash reward, if they survive a certain amount of time in the front without being either wounded or KIA?

    And that “certain time” will be twice the amount of their average life expectancy when send to the front?
