  1. ***The Telegraph reports:***

Britain must be ready to fight a major war in three years, the new head of the Army has said, as he warned [Russia will seek revenge on the West for aiding Ukraine](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/07/12/feckless-britain-has-handed-putin-an-undeserved-victory/).

General Sir Roly Walker, Chief of the General Staff, said the Army needed to rapidly modernise to double its ability to kill the enemy by 2027 and triple it by the end of the decade.

In his first major intervention since assuming the role last month, the former SAS officer said Britain must be able to “deter or fight a war in three years”.

He warned that in the second half of this decade, Russia, China and Iran could group to put the West under pressure and achieve their individual goals.

Sir Roly pointed to a scenario whereby a “very, very dangerous” [Russia emerges from Ukraine](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/05/31/nato-praises-uk-permission-ukraine-weapons-strike-russia/), either defeated or as victors, [China invades Taiwan](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/us/politics/2024/07/17/donald-trump-defend-taiwan-china/) and [Iran becomes more aggressive](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/iran/).

“That is why you get to this point by … 2027-2028 this convergence may have reached some sort of mutual singularity and your ability to deal with them in isolation – a specific crisis that can be managed by the rules-based system – I think is significantly diminished,” Sir Roly said.

“A problem in one area is likely to trigger a sympathetic detonation in another and therefore it is a global problem looked at from different perspectives around the world.”

  2. I remember when the Telegraph was respected broadsheet journalism. It’s a shame now that most reports i read from the Telegraph is disinformation about immigrants, sentencing, or transgender people. When it comes to a report about national security, I have to file it with the rest of the rubbish.

  3. If NATO goes to war with Russia, the world is cooked so why does it even matter

  4. The top brass always say this when they get the role it’s tradition to immediately come in. Chuck everything addressed to the last guy in the bin and then arrange an interview with a broadsheet about the armed forces need even more money.

  5. Being *ready* for war doesn’t mean that war is likely. In fact, boosting deterrence is a way to make it *less* likely

  6. More beating of the war drum to get the stupid frothed up. Let them and their loved ones go off to a horrific and pointless death, leave the rest of us out of it.

  7. I’ve never seen “Please, give us more money” written bolder tones.

War is extremely expensive. Question: what are you willing to give up and do without, now, today? Do you want less welfare? Less education? Less retirement money?

Also, which of your relatives are you willing to see killed? Your son? Your daughter?

  8. War with whom? Why can’t they just stay on their island?

  9. Germany and France reply “Good luck. Fight real good for us, and let us know who won.”

  10. Obvious propaganda bullshit. Yeah, downvote me all you want, Russia isn’t going to wage war on Europe/UK/US as that will inevitably lead to a nuclear disaster and none of the elite who have their villas, yachts and money scattered in the west will let it happen.

But on the other hand since it’s the Army chief talking 100% people can start preparing for their rights to be restricted in the future.

  11. Well that’s the problem. You are never ready for war. People fighting in WW 1 thought they were ready for war too. Russia thought they were ready to fight against ukraine…..

And then war happens and young people die and the old blame their own failures on the young…
