‘I am not the minister,’ McDonald says as she defends Sinn Féin migration policy

  1. Wishy washy cowardice that has costed them the opportunity to lead in the next election. Could’ve taken a firm stance against these anti-immigrant protests but decided to sit on the fence.

  2. A question that I haven’t seen asked of Sinn Féin’s policy is how much it slows things down. They’re talking about a consultation process that’s similar to planning consultation but that can take years in some instances.

The government are moving people to wherever is free because of the sheer volume of IPAs. If you slow that down without addressing the root problem, which is the number of people coming in, it’s going to create absolute havoc.

  3. SF really need to clear off now so a genuine alternative to FF and FG can coalesce. They’ve hogged the opposition limelight for years but their baggage and their utter lack of political prowess is just bolstering FF/FG at this stage. Biggest open goal in years with FF and FG being in the same government while destroying a generation with a housing crisis. How could anyone screw that up? The election was giftwrapped for them. If they can’t manage with that, they’d be an utter shambles handling actual governance.

  4. >First of all, I have to say your tone with me in this interview is extremely rude.

Announces a new party policy on radio, but gets her back up when asked to elaborate how it differs from the current policy, and the costing for it. PBH got under her skin with basic follow up questions that she wasn’t able to answer. Doesn’t come across well

She’s not the minister, but the policy has to stand up to scrutiny

  5. She came off incredibly poorly in that interview. Couldn’t answer the most basic and obvious questions about their “new” policy.

At what point are the party members going to push for a new leader? If it continues like this (barring some disaster for the government before the next election) the current gov will get an easy 5 more years.

  6. The EU migration pact is now policy so everything our government do from now is just papering around the edges. That was a sound bite to get votes for their candidates in working class areas while deflecting to the gov.

  7. In some ways it’s a pity that their immigration policy or lack thereof has wiped out their support base, how did nobody in the party not flag this years ago? It’s almost like as if they’re terrified of the whole issue.

I’m not a politico but I’d say their demise is problematic now for Irish politics, who is going to be a viable alternative to fffg, they can do what they want now.

  8. SF have become too focused on spin.

They go with the flow and don’t appear to have concrete positions on many things.

Really theyll be lucky to get 10% of the vote at the next election if at all.

  9. I just wish “journalists” took this tone with government TDs and not just the opposition

  10. When pressed during the last election on their housing policy costing, increasing taxes while also recruiting record numbers of hospital consultants (who would be subject to the new taxes)and other things, SF claimed a biased media. Even today Philip Boucher Hayes is getting dogs abuse on social media for asking tough questions.

The main part of the policy is “putting International Protection Applicants in more affluent areas”. Yet they are already in these areas without the burning down of hotels.

Her immigration policy document could have laid out plans on how to cut down times on decisions regarding applications, how to make sure those arriving get basic shelter and are looked after until their claims are.processed and how to integrate them in communities. .

Yet the main part of the policy is basically taking a far right dog whistle about other areas not taking IPA’s this is the same language that has fuelled plenty of fires around the country.

  11. She’s actually a clown.

Annoying because I was going to vote SF in the next election but they have been shown up massively.

I was hopeful that the launching of a new migration policy would have actual sensible ideas (increase number of safe countries, actually enforce deportations) but instead it’s just moronic stuff around consultation in communities which will do nothing.

Unfortunately this almost certainly seals another 5 years of FF/FG when they have made an absolute mess of running the country.

Is it too much to ask for some competent opposition?

  12. “First of all, I have to say your tone with me in this interview is extremely rude.”

“Are you actually interested in hearing the policy or simply nit-picking with me?”

This is out of touch with how politicians are typically interviewed worldwide now. Maybe it would be better if the style was less confrontational, but its naive for a candidate for Taoiseach to respond like this.
