>Blenheim Palace was built to celebrate Britain’s triumph in a European war. This week’s summit of the European Political Community comes amid a huge, and largely unrecognised defence and security crisis. Chiefly, Nato is losing its undeclared war with Russia.
>The biggest victim right now is Ukraine. The Biden administration’s ban on using American (or even British) long-range weapons to strike missile bases and airfields deep inside Russia consigns Ukraine to an unwinnable war of attrition with its tormentor. But Russia is also fighting an almost unchecked campaign of sabotage and intimidation in Nato countries, to which the alliance struggles to respond.
>Worse, looming American isolationism, exemplified by Donald Trump’s vice-presidential pick, JD Vance, means that even Nato’s ability to fulfil its core task, defending its own territory, is in question. The most vulnerable point is the swan’s neck of territory, just 40 miles wide, that connects Suwalki in Poland and Alytus in Lithuania. To the southeast is Belarus, now a Russian satrapy, where the Kremlin recently conducted nuclear drills. Chinese troops exercised there this month, highlighting Beijing’s growing presence in Europe. To the northwest is Kaliningrad, a Russian military bastion that hosts nuclear-armed Iskander missiles that can reach Berlin. If Russia seizes this territory, the Baltic states are cut off from Europe, and the West — divided and distracted — faces a choice between all-out war or surrender.
Speaking of the Suwałki Gap, here are a quite in-depth analysis of the current situation and prospects: https://www.reddit.com/r/UkrainianConflict/comments/1e5evbs/the_suwa%C5%82ki_gap_ignition_point_in_the_forest/
Yea but we aren’t really at war with Putin, and we should be.
Sadly uur politicians don’t want to admit that.
NATO will not intervene in the war unless Russia does more than barking like a dog. Barking dogs don’t bite because their barking comes from their fear.
So much for “not wanting to escalate”…. Again, how are NATO countries continuously letting Russia define what an escalation is?
It’s not just Putin. China, Iran and North Korea (all allies of Russia, of course) are all at war with us too.
Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan and South Korea are all on the front lines of the democratic West’s defense against authoritarian aggression.
If they are executing a mass campaign of sabotage they aren’t doing a very good job of it. Meanwhile their conventional forces are being eroded every day which is a huge win for nato
I worry that this, if it hasn’t already, will escalate so much people will forget how it started.
It can only get worse for pUtler. NATO would absolutely thrash ruZZia. With complete and total air superiority the ruZZian conventional and nuclear forces would be defenseless.
