  1. Flipping heck, what an absolute farce. All the while claiming that they couldn’t afford to restore doctors salaries to pre austerity levels.

  2. If a crime hasn’t been committed here that hole needs filling and the people involved still need to be named and shamed repeatedly so that they become synonymous with the Rwanda scam.

  3. Actually 2 billion on Rwanda and 8 billion on “consultants” no doubt. Who are probably friends and family of a Tory.

  4. So more money would have been wasted by Sunak, not forgetting how many Covid PPE contracts he wrote off during his stint as chancellor.

  5. Probably cheaper than supporting the migrants until they’re on their deathbed. Refugees have 51% employment rate, they all need housing, many will be on council housing, they will all eventually need some healthcare and they will be disproportionately on state welfare. Higher upfront cost to send them to Rwanda though, but someone should estimate how much it costs to take care of the average refugee for the next 50-70 years of their residency in the UK. The government/the ONS really need to step in and report the estimated lifetime cost of refugees so we can have a proper debate about the financial cost.

  6. The cost of the actual sending part of the Rwanda plan is about £700m. The £10B figure is mostly the cost of *not* processing the remaining ones that the Rwanda plan has no capacity for. If they’re not processed they can’t be sent back anywhere (even if they’re an economic migrant from a safe country), they can’t work and provide for themselves and contribute to society (even if they’re a much needed Nurse). All they can do is sit in their commandeered hotel and wait for the government to process them – that’s where the much larger figure comes from.

People may scaremonger and say Labour will “let them all in”, but a lot are already in. Whatever the Labour plan for them is, it has to be better than the conservative plan which was to just let them sit there in their hotels while spending a stupid amount of money to completely ignore the problem.

  7. *Launder. They planned to launder ten billion pounds through the Rwanda migrant scheme.

  8. Let me guess – most was going to go to private companies that their friends and families own… tory is as tory does and tory usually does for itself

  9. So they’d have been able to find £10bn but not £2.5bn to lift the 2 child cap. Maybe there is a magic money tree after all.

  10. Bloody criminal.

I don’t think anyone can deny that something needs to be done to tackle illegal immigration – or even legal immigration – but this seems like a monumental waste of money. I’m no Labour fan but thank god it was stopped in its tracks.

  11. Well, more of the party of responsible spending I see!

  12. Worth it.

Even if we only send 2 volunteers off, see all the 8 billion people it deterred?

The key is to make your shit logic so silly and so based on fantasy metrics that it can’t be disproved.

  13. Of course, they’re getting a little short after the billions they siphoned off from Covid are running out.

  14. The current onshore system costs 4 billion every year, just to put it in perspective. This isn’t a problem that’s ever going to go away.

20 year cost of onshore processing: 80 billion

20 year cost of Rwanda: 10 billion + whatever, but certainly not 70
