Kinda reads like a crusader kings 2 pop-up box there about your spymaster discovering your spymaster’s plot to replace your spymaster with your spymaster.
Or another internal investigation that gets nobbled by the Met at the last moment?
>Boris Johnson: MI5 ‘must investigate’ PM as ‘security risk’ after Partygate leaks
However, accepting donations from Putins cronies?
Perfectly acceptable and above board!
Jeeeeez that title is such a stretch man..
I hate boris and wish this was true but it’s only the former labour cabinet minister suggesting they should. The title makes it seem like MI5 announced it or some shit.
This is a very selective quote to use as the thread title. One labour member said this. MI5 do not hold this opinion. I am very much angry about all that has happened under Boris but this title is ridiculous.
The Security Service don’t do public facing investigations and they don’t work on demand from MP’s, opposition or government.
Their motto enshrines the core purpose of their existence ‘Regnum Defende’- in defence of the realm.
They exist to protect the crown and it’s subjects, not the elected government.
As such they’re notionally beyond the government and whilst they are tasked on national security by the government and overseen by the intelligence select committee they act impartially to prevent harm to the nation from enemies based within its borders.
The PM will have been through enhanced DV and cleared for access to the highest level of classified information. If he had failed vetting then he wouldn’t be the sitting PM and wouldn’t have access to information.
If he’s a liability then he’ll have a file at Thames House and he’ll be under monitoring etc. there will be processes in place should such a situation arise.
Within espionage it’s often best that the other side are ignorant to what you actually know.
What investigation? They already know everyone who is there, what they’re doing and where they are. This is like asking an it consultant if they considered turning it off and on again
I was curious about Johnson’s confidence when telling people to wait for the report. Obviously he was desperate but it seemed like a pointless strategy because, while it might delay the inevitable by a week or so, ultimately the report was still coming. In hindsight, I now think he knew intervention by the Met was always going to happen and that he could rely on a redacted report to give him enough room to pressure the backbenchers.
Presumably Mi5 already know how securely any given PM handles classified documents in their possession, and who is spending time in that building. Security services are capable of bungling routine tasks too, but that seems like a different question.
If Boris is careless with security procedures, what mechanisms exist to address that?
Come off it – May stopped MI5 investigating Arron Banks. This Tory Mafia is unworthy of being a government from Cameron on – every single one of them.
