I mean it isn’t, you just gotta tell a good story.
“Remember this character from a movie you didn’t really like 15 years ago?!”
So is making a sequel to a franchise that a lot of fans thought should have ended in 1989.
Bad storytelling is the death of bad storytelling
The more actors and especially directors talk, the less interested I am in movies.
He’s just mad they revived Wolverine
No, mediocre storytelling is the death of storytelling.
The actual quote:
“It’s weird that I’ve even worked in the world of IP entertainment because I don’t like multi-movie universe-building,” Mangold said. “I think it’s the enemy of storytelling. The death of storytelling. It’s more interesting to people the way the Legos connect than the way the story works in front of us.”
People don’t hate multiverses, they hate bad stories
I personally think multiverse stuff is just lazy writing, but what do i know.
Multiverse stories have existed in comics since at least the 50s. Thats a pretty slow death.
Whoa a piping hot take from James here
No decision means anything, no choice is meaningful if that choice is just 1 out of a billion billion possible variants. No death has any meaning. No sacrfifice. Nothing can mean anything in a multiverse scenario.
Isn’t this the fellow who’s been working for Disney since the 80’s, who’s done two Wolverine films and an Indiana Jones sequel, who does quite a lot of adaptations of people’s life stories instead of fully original works and who just worked as a writing consultant on the new Deadpool film?
He’s successful, you can’t take that away from James Mangold but this is kind of like if Pink was saying that she doesn’t like pop and that it’s the death of serious music. Just totally hypocritical and the fact that James is saying this as soon as the new Deadpool film releases, the one that’s all about multi-movie-universe-building, makes it sound like he’s just begging for attention.
It removes the meaning of any action taken by a character bc there is some other dimension where they didn’t sacrifice themselves or something.
I s2g redditors cannot handle the most mild criticism of Marvel movies.
Yeah, because it killed the comics that did it. *rolling eyes so hard*
So counterparts was bad story telling? That was awesome! Dark Matter was good. Outer Range was superb and did not deserve its cancelation. Dark is excellent! So bad story telling screws up tv and movies, not the existence of a multiverse plot set up.
Says the guy that made Dial of Destiny.
In a way he’s correct as it takes out the stakes a character can make.
These comic book movies seem like they will never die. How many versions of Batman am I expected to absorb and now we are going deep on the villains too? . Talk about a fucking multiverse.
Your storytelling would have to be pretty weak for some franchise to kill it.
While I agree, it’s pretty bold coming from the director of Dial of Destiny, which is easily one of the worst sequels of all time
Maybe it wasn’t a franchise but Dark Matter is a really good show.
Dark Matter and everything everywhere all at once are in a competition for the best piece of multiversity fiction in my mind.
Long, drawn out fight scenes that are 95% CG and take up half the runtime are the death of storytelling.
Maybe unpopular but 100% true for me. Once that was a thing in Avengers Endgame and the most recent spiderverse I was pretty much out. If there is a no real canon, and anything is possible in a series, it’s hard for me to get motivated as a plot-focused person
It’s sucks because when done right, stories about the Multiverse can be absolutely incredible.Such as Everything Everywhere All At Once. But superhero movies have turned it into a cheap parlor trick.
The best film he ever directed was ‘Cop Land’
I mean, you can still make other stories. And a film is only one way to tell a story, so what are you even talking about?
**Then don’t do it it**
In general, multiverse, timey-wimey stories are lazy and uninspiring.
This dude has made some solid flicks, just like many, many other directors and storytellers have.
James – Logan was fantastic. Now get over yourself and just make another good movie, instead of whining about the movies that are doing better than yours.
This is a poorly thought out thesis by Mangold.
