The scale is still just years so just put the summer and winter on the same graph.
I mean it makes sense. Most people don’t want to wait for hours to see something happen.
Still blows my mind that summer gets more viewers than winter. What does summer have that’s fun to watch other than fencing, badminton, and ping pong?
I can watch multiple live specific event streams online instead of what nbc features. I’ll take streaming all day
With cricket joining the 2028 Olympics, the audience reach is going to increase.
By a lot
The tv coverage is horrible. Only shows gymnastics, a few countries, and commercials. Why would I keep that on?
What’s the best way to stream the Olympics?
Very interesting to read how poorly the Olympics are broadcast in the US.
Here in Greece (bad example considering the Olympics are 50% of our personality) public television has like, 5 extra channels created so they can broadcast quite literally everything in the Olympics.
Not just Greek players or major sports, they have everything available, for free.
Thought that was the norm worldwide!
Seems like every single comment is missing the point? Or am I? This isnt a TV vs Online Demand Streaming chart. This says global demand is steady yet somehow there are tons of views on these videos online? So the same people are watching it multiple times?
I am planning to watch every event possible. I am dvr’ing the whole thing.
Surprised that anybody but the parents of the athletes watch the Olympics
US TV coverage is notoriously horrible. I’m going to bet many other countries are similar. I can get pretty much anything I want online though.
Oh also same thing about the Olympics.
Ofcourse, screw network adds who wants to see that?
I’m kind of interested to know how my country does, but I don’t really watch the events. I used to watch to see mr. Usain Bolt run so i would see a few events while waiting for that. but now that he has retired i just see the medal count and some replays for my own country on the news every day.
So they’re not watching the Games, they’re watching… the games?
Number of people who saw “at least 1 minute”
Someone watching it for 1 minute combined across all of that year’s Olympics counts
Number of “video views” though digital channels
A music vid of ceremony or a short clip of a dunk watched 50 million times each counts as 100million
They really are trying to pump up the totals aren’t they?
They’ve destroyed the suspense. They don’t even show complete events. Just a sob backstory of athlete X and here’s X’s heat. So stupid.
This shouldn’t be a line graph. It should just be separate bars or data points. People don’t watch the Olympics in-between. 😉
There hasn’t been one continuous Olympic broadcast in my country for years now, there have been multiple streams available as long as digital terrestrial TV has been available.
wait, but on demand video consuption before mid 2010s was close to non existent, it’s normal that it sky-rocketed
Yet another TV vs internet graph..
The olympics are not something I would ever pay to watch, if it’s not available on one of the channels I already own I’m simply going to skip it that year.
As so many of the athletes (and social media managers) are now Gen Z there is already a huge amount of content on TikTok and Instagram and I hope the official news coverage doesn’t feel too stifled and old people, it’s for young people I want it to feel fresh. Anyway my point being I’ll watch more official / BTS content than I’ll watch actual games
Very nice graph to see amount of imaginary views (and likes and so on) on the digital platforms (very much any popular site).
See 20B likes/views/subscriptions? Real amount is 4B.
Didn’t even know they were on. I couldn’t name a sport or event I would rather watch than do myself though.
The coverage is fucking terrible
I would’ve expected the viewership to be closer, for example where I live I’d say the Winter games are way more popular.
What does even “video consumption” mean?
Who would have thought uh
Reached audience ≠ actual audience
How have 7 billion people watched 20 billion videos of the games? I am definitely reading this chart wrong
i think people are vaguely aware that they’re largely an opportunity for authoritarians to appeal to their people… the fact that nations which systematically cheat are rarely punished, autocrats are courted for great quality expensive facilities
