I see here that over 1516 euros a year I require proof…. Does that mean for every line item?
I moved to Germany in 2023 from the Netherlands.
So I would see myself qualifying for the moving expenses, home office expenses plus I took an on-site goethe immersion course before starting my job which was like 2k with accommodation.
.
- Since the combined amount would be 1260 + 964 + 1800 = 4024 do I need to really show all my home office and relocation expenses?
.
- Additionally I effectively moved back to the USA for 6 weeks before starting my Goethe course…. The flight was a round trip via Amsterdam, can any of that be included as a moving expense?
.
- Can someone help me understand meal allowances for relocation and education I see online it being tax deductible but I don't see the actual amount or process
.
- If I have US medical insurance is that tax deductible?

Not a tax advisor, no personal tax advice: You can generally deduct as much as you spend. Some things have limits, but those are capped by the tax office, if you claim 5000 and there is a cap of 3000, they simply won’t calculate more than 3.000. If you go above the moving cost allowance you have to prove your moving costs (if asked, moving costs are often accepted without), but you need to keep invoices.
That number you quoted is simply the allowances combined, that you can always claim, that’s combined from multiple position, not a general number. If you don’t claim most of those items, but 1500 in office supplies, they will ask for invoices. But, I don’t see how your US flight is deductable in any way. Generally moving costs are tax deductable if they allow you to move closer to a job or education option, and 6 weeks sound more like an extended holiday.
