Curious how this deals with the change in countries.. For example, USSR was several countries before USSR, including russia, and then after the break-up. Is Russia also counted? What about Belarus for example?

I would love to see someone create an XY scatter chart of countries based on total population and per capita GDP, to see how much those factors correlate to overall Olympic success.
Almost all Olympic sports don’t pay enough for athletes to make a full-time living off earnings and prize money alone. Which means the upper-hand in the medal standings belongs to countries that can provide more athletes with endorsement and sponsorship opportunities so they can train and practice full time (especially in the medal-rich sports like Athletics and Swimming).

Fun fact in the 1904 Olympic soccer tournament there were 3 teams entered, 2 from the US one from Canada, US got gold and bronze.
If you add West Germany (of which todays Germany is the direct successor) and the german team after WW2 before it was split in East and West German teams, Germany is exactly 1 gold medal in front of the UK
