  1. The European Commission has rejected a request from Hungary and Slovakia to urge Ukraine to lift the ban on the transit of Russian oil from Lukoil.

The Financial Times [writes](https://www.ft.com/content/ea9ce543-5aca-4b63-a1e3-b12bc0ccc9c1) about this, citing its own sources, Hromadske [reports](https://hromadske.ua/svit/228396-u-yes-vidkhylyly-prokhannia-uhorshchyny-ta-slovachchyny-zaklykaty-ukrayinu-skasuvaty-zaboronu-na-tranzyt-nafty-z-rf).

Hungary and Slovakia have asked the European Commission to start consultations on a trade agreement with Ukraine. However, EU Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis told the FT that Brussels “will need more time to gather evidence and assess the legal situation”.

On July 24, a meeting of EU trade representatives was held. At the meeting, 11 countries spoke in support of his position, and none of the parties sided with Budapest and Bratislava, three unnamed European diplomats told the publication. One of them noted that the trade agreement with Ukraine contains a security clause that could allow for the interruption of transit supplies.

Slovakian President Peter Pellegrini also reacted to Ukraine’s decision and warned that Slovakia could take “indefinite measures in response” to Ukraine’s ban on oil transportation by the Russian company Lukoil.

Hungary also voiced similar threats. Budapest has threatened to block the payment of 6.5 billion euros from the European Peace Fund to Ukraine if Kyiv does not agree to lift the transit ban.

  2. Good. They had two years to figure out an alternative from russian oil but choose to double down instead. Not to mention their choice to choose to foster closer relations with moscow. Even if Ukraine agrees to lift the ban, these two would simply move the goal post and demand more. Enough is enough.

  3. Excellent news. Hungary and Slovakia might bluster and boast about consequences, but in a few weeks, when the gas is completely cut off and the energy crisis begins, well….

Let’s just see how the local populations react

  4. Two dotardian countries about to Orban Around and Find Out.

  5. as a slovak…. good!
let the trash know where they belong
    (i mean Fico and Orban)

  6. While I applaud the result and Orban deserves this, we only ever see hateful rhetoric from Slovakia, but Fico never actually blocked anything and only got to power recently (and previous government was pro-Ukraine) so their lack of preparedness is a result of mostly mismanagement and not malice.

  7. orban and fico in putin’s ass just so its not putin who closes the tap and their voters base (mostly elderly and uneducated) wont be angry on high oil and gas prices and reduced social benefits.
However they miscalculated badly, as usually, if you wont pick the side you end up pissing up all. Quite a power move by Ukraine, and it seems rest of EU aint gonna blink twice as fedup by fico and orban especially. Those two aint gonna vote Ukraine to EU or NATO, better close the tap and “adjust next elections results”.
