It’s a hard pill to swallow, but the two best comic book series in Europe were made by French speaking people. Any recommendations for comics from your country I can read this summer?

  1. Nope… Not even close.

    Not when judge dredd exists.

  2. Dylan Dog.

    Diabolik.

    Tex.

Heck, even Lupo Alberto and Cattivik.

  3. Thorgal, if you haven’t yet.

    Edit: I would also recommend
    – Cities of the Fantastic (sometimes translated as Dark Cities or Obscure Cities)
    – Blake and Mortimer
    – Largo Winch
    – Lucky Luke
    – Le Chat
    – Yoko Tsuno
    – Gaston Lagaffe
    – The Red Knight
    – Spirou & Fantasio
    – Le Petit Spirou
    – XIII
    – Spike & Suzy
    – Bakelandt
    – Boule & Bill
    – Natacha
    – Nero
    – The Bluecoats
    – Melusine
    – Cowboy Henk
    – Pierre Tombal

  4. Did other countries have an equivalent of [Commando](https://archive.org/details/commando0384)? Crappy World War 2 stories, churned out in a tiny booklet printed on toilet paper. Rubbish but it only cost 30p an issue, so people bought it. Still do, apparently.

  5. Watchmen was written by Barry’s

  6. Corto Maltese is a really good italian comic by Hugo Pratt, all the drawings made in watercolors

  7. It’s not hard to swallow at all. The French are great at cartoons, too. Arcane and Wakfu are also French and they’re fantastic.

  8. I’d add a couple of other Franco-Belgian comics from my childhood. Even Lucky Luke was the best Western-themed comic book series.

  9. Donald Duck/Scrooge McDuck comics are a must. I believe that practically every Western European Nation runs them and the majority have written/drawn their own.

Iirc there are even some Globi books in english

  11. Asterix taught me a lot about different European cultures, and how best to make fun of them.

It was like a training ground for this place.
