On October 21, Vilnius City Municipality held an exercise on a possible accident at Belarus’ Astravyets nuclear power plant, built some 50 kilometres from the Lithuanian capital.

  1. This seems very reasonable, the introduction of mass messaging really is a breakthrough in emergency situations.

As a side I’m visiting Vilnius and the surrounding areas for a drop of culture, history and hiking beginning of Dec and am really looking forward to it.

Edit: I hope tourists get the mass message lol

  2. Lithuanian politicians have mastered the art of keeping their citizens frightened enough that they’ll do just about anything. I know a Lithuanian friend that was stock piling iodine pills and couldn’t help but stare on in amusement. Even though I tried to calmy explain to her the technical reasons that the VVER-1200 reactor being used is one of the safest around with multiple factor fail safe systems built in and it is the same one being built in many countries around the world, she would have none of it.

When politicians find the sweet Russophobic spot, the populace is distracted enough to not interrogate their local failings and accountability. It’s the classic “hey look, Russia! Belarus”, chuck in a few words like “nuclear”, “melt down” and you have achieved enough fear to keep them obsessed with an outside party.

  3. I remember when we have these type of exercises in Sweden in the 80s after Chernobyl. Then we where afraid of the nuclear power plant in Ignalina in Lithuania.

I hope that the Baltic nations can join in the Nordic Councils collaboration around power supply and production of electricity so they don’t have to build a new nuclear power plant.
