  1. RIP Canada.

We will be wiping tears and paying for this shit for the next 7 years while the rest of the global economy leaves us in the dust

  2. Who’s paying this? The taxpayer? Canadians can barely afford to pay their bills.

  3. What an idiotic decision. What’s passed has passed, Canadian taxpayers shouldn’t be expected to foot the bill for some centuries old treaty.

  4. I’m no expert on this subject, but here are some thoughts:
    1) Keep in mind, this money doesn’t leave our economy. It just shifts wealth within the economy. Ideally this would mainly be from the crown (by way of crown land) or from the very rich.
    2) I do believe that we need to be a nation of laws. A treaty made – even a stupid one, should be kept. You can’t do business with a nation that doesn’t abide by it’s contracts.
    3) At some point, we will all be much better off if we are a nation of people with equal rights regardless of race and background. Once we’ve reconciled the abuse and wrongs suffered by natives, I would like to see us become one people under the law and in the way we treat each other. Same taxes, same programs available, etc. Skin colour shouldn’t grant or cost anyone anything.

  5. Watch out guys, the 4 digit account names are hear and spreading cheer and joy as always (/s)

Seriously, who makes an account with random numbers at the end besides mostly trolls and bots.

  6. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter if there’s a treaty or not. Absolutely nothing would happen if Canada broke the hundreds of years old treaty. And it’s in the best interests of the overwhelming majority of Canadian taxpayers that they do.

  7. *Aboriginal Australia gleefully watch and start taking notes….*

  8. Well one thing to note is that that treaty was in reality negotiated with great Britain since canada was a dominion…

  9. I havent did thorough research, but from what I gather First Nations don’t pay taxes, yet they get a disproportionate amount of Canadian public funds transfer per capita. Is that correct?

  10. Yep let’s just throw more money at the problem with practically no oversight, because that would be offensive. That’s worked out great in the past. Certainly no grifters will take advantage of this, and the money will go to first nations families that actually need it instead of Chiefs…

  11. TBH im waiting for a church tax to help with all the reparations.

  12. I hate paying extra taxes for the mistakes of others. How about we first deduct their share of the cost Canada’s hospitals/police/schools/teachers etc… for the past 100+ years.

  13. I am not condoning anything that happened in the past, but I have a legit question, how long until we’ve plateaued and reparations aren’t needed anymore and we’re all equal?

There is a point in history where we’re all on the same level and we’ve moved on past the mistakes of our ancestors.

  14. If Canada owes it, the Catholic church can pay the bill.

Tax them. It’s long, long overdue.

  15. So Acadians get a “we’re sorry” from the queen and indigenous get $126b.

That’s the problem with reparations, there’s always more people that were harmed.

  16. Alberta alone has a surplus of over $4 billion and can’t manage forest fires. Everyone is acting like there is not any money to honor the treaty and taxes would have to go up. It’s just not the case.

  17. It did not make any ruling about what is owed, only that money is owed. The headline is Guardian clickbait.

There will be negotiations on how much is owed.

  18. Financial support of First Nations (who are 5% of Canadas population) account for the single largest line item in the federal Canadian budget ($40b+ annually. Shaming Canada for never ending reparations money has became a massive industry

  19. This can be a very complex issue.

I’d like to point out though that Canada created the legal framework that became the apartheid framework in South Africa.

There is a big difference between how the US treaty with the first-people and the Canadian treaty with first people.

The first people of canada did not sign treaties of defeat. The british came in and claimed land but the first people didn’t exactly understand the claiming of land as it was consider common land. You could argue the british were too primitive themselves as common land is now a pretty recognized legal standard now.

However whether the current citizens inherited the sins of the past doesn’t matter as they still benefit from the current situation. Toronto is a site of a major first people settlement and Niagara was considered a land of bounty & plenty. The first people of Niagara was actually considered fat as it was so bountiful; so british explorers called them lazy because they didn’t need to hunt from all the dead game that wash ashore from the Niagara falls and how easy it was to fish.

But if you were to hand over the land value of Toronto to the first people it would be in the cost of billions of dollars. That’s not what they are asking for but yet some ball park of that would be 50%.

Yet that’s not what they are asking for… they are asking for the agreements that were made be respected which has not be the case in the last 100 years despite disregard to their basic constitutional rights given to them by the Indian Act is an absolute legal travesty and should be treated that way; they are not asking for full restitution. They just want what they were promised.

I can understand what anyone is going to say next but I will tell you that I have played Lacrosse and have played on reserves. Did high-school wrestling against their wrestlers. It wasn’t until later in life I understood why they wanted to win against me so much.

  20. Just remember, there is nothing stopping a country from passing a law that says “Fuck you, no.” unless you can militarily change their mind.

  21. that’s ok, instead we have a land acknowledgment prepending all meetings /s

  22. I want to be first nation’s. I’m sick of paying taxes. I want free stuff and free money too. It sucks to just be a regular Canadian
