I wish the ai industry bubble would just crash already. Using more power than several African nations to make a chatbot that automates things like coverletters effectively and does fuck all else very well is a joke that’s too on the nose to continue.
It’s like Terry Pratchett is writing our apocalypse.
AI is an arms race between a lot of big tech companies. Everybody wants to be first to be really good at a lot of commercial applications. Google abandoned their climate goals because their computing power for baby AI takes so much power there was no way they could meet their targets. Microsoft and Amazon are using just as much energy for their AI development.
If we’re going to have this, a collaborative effort would be a fraction of the emissions. But that doesn’t support the kind of profits people at the top want.
