market share of plugin electric cars by country or region

  1. Important difference between graph title and post title, this is **new** car sales, not total cars, and they still only make up 1.1% of cars in use in Europe.

What’s insane to me is Norway, that had 86% of market share in 2019, and 22% total rate across all cars currently!

  2. The explicit mention of “plug-in” makes me think this refers not only to battery electric cars but also plug-in hybrids, since battery electric cars are plug-in anyway.

  3. The graph suggests every 1 in 5 cars in Europe is plugin. It’s much less in Poland for example, so the statistics is even higher in countries like Norway.

  4. I remember there were studies doubting the narrative that plug-in hybrids are better for the environment, so this kind of statistic that doesn’t differentiate between pure electric and hybrid seems to miss the point

  5. The US are currently digging themselves hopelessly behind when it comes to tomorrow’s technology by having their politics dominated by aging dinosaurs like the coal or petroleum industry.

Way to go, leaving it all to China to be world leaders in battery and solar technology. I’m sure that will be a great choice over the next 50-100 years. Not at all going to make the US a poorer country. 🙄

  6. Germany getting rid off nuclear <angst>

The future of electric cars in Europe doesn’t look too bright if you ask me.

  7. If we will really require all houses to be equiped with EV chargers, it will cause increase our car dependency just like parking minimums.

  8. Waiting for United Statians to come in and tell us how it’s cHiNa that’s causing all the pollution, and that as long as they do “nothing”, we also don’t have to.

  9. China’s adoption rate last year was impressive considering they are closer to the US than Europe when it comes to the country size. I suppose different living standards contribute to that – most Chinese do not live in sprawling suburbs where a car is necessary to get anything done. Perhaps the charging stations are more widely available as well, it’s a major bottleneck when it comes to the adoption of EVs in America.

  10. i will always be grateful to the early believers in electrification

    **like imagine in 2010 ,**

    * electric cars were like 0.1% of new car sales in Europe,
    * 0.01% of new car sales in the world,
    * and like 0.001% of all cars in the road

and some smart people out there knew what the future is going to be

and here we are today with 1% of all cars in the world being electric ,like 1000 times more than 15 years ago

those engineers and inventors had testicles wich can generate their own gravitational pull

  11. I mean, I’m all for poking fun at the global hegemon but … Can you even get to anywhere and back in the US on a full charge? It is my understanding that US driving distances are looooooooooooooooooong in comparison with European driving distances.

  12. That’s the plot explaining why Tesla will be a niche car in near future. In Europe most electric cars purchased are not teslas and won’t be. Tesla has no QC and no service.
