1. Have they tried having a large share portfolio though?

2. Are they actually poorer or do they just feel they are?

3. I think a lot of people are more material and wealth focused, also more people hit by redundancies and scared of not having more than they did the year before. economic growth is generally valued a lot more than personal growth. Things being more expensive is only one factor.

4. Have they tried not being so poor? Maybe cut out the avocado toast and Netflix and use that money to buy a large house in north London and go to the Maldives.

5. “Feeling poorer” doesn’t really mean much.

   I feel less poor than I did 5 years ago. Some of that is a few small wage rises. But the biggest contributor is five years ago I was putting every expendable pound into my house deposit fund. I’ve bought since so have more fun money to play with.

   Not arguing the cost of living hasn’t had a massive impact but a quantitative measure would’ve been more useful.

7. Oh? Really? But… But I was told on Reddit that people are doing MUCH better than they were 5 years ago, and any suggestion that people arent is fear-mongering…

8. I feel poorer than I did 5 years ago. I *am* poorer, but I feel poorer too. That is in real and nominal terms.

9. Every time I do the weekly shop the prices have gone up again. The juice we used to buy was £1.40 two years ago and now it’s 2.10. Lettuce from 1.20 to 1.65. Cereal bars from 1 to 1.35. Etc etc.

10. Just under 50% of people feel better off than 5 years ago.

13. They don’t feel poorer. They ARE poorer.

    Wages have barely moved but the prices of everything has skyrocketed.

    Not only that but big corporations making record profits somehow feel the need to further increase prices because they might make a 100 million in profit instead of 101 million. They also reduce service level and more.

    Everything is a fucking subscription now, even just for stuff in your car.

    Not to mention especially in the UK you get squeezed dry for tax at every step of your employed life, only to get extremely sub standard services and crumbling infrastructure in return.

14. Maybe because they’re paying all the stealth taxes and prices hikes to pay for the utter mismanagement of Covid…?

    Billionaires didn’t get any poorer, that’s for sure.

16. Easily. I found a shop receipt whilst cleaning up the garage the cost of our shopping has doubled in the past 5 years, want to take a guess if my salary has doubled as well?

17. In 2014 I was on £28000 and the missus was on £13000 part time. Didn’t really worry about money. Had two cars, holiday in the summer and felt comfortable. In 2024 I’m on £35,000, missus is on £21000 (still part time ish due to kids) and everything is a struggle.

    We have no spare cash at all. Our mortgage hasn’t really gone up due fixing for long terms and we’ve gone down to one car.

    We ‘nipped in’ to Aldi yesterday and left talking about how the £43 we spent would have bought us half the shop years ago.

    Petrol is ridiculous, gas and electric is double what it was. We went to the cinema as a rare treat and it was £57 for four of us with two popcorn and two drinks. It’s wild.
