Worried the outsiders will show up the staff. Why are people in RTE so resistant to change?
I’m inclined to think the rot at RTE is far from just the big wigs, everything I’ve heard suggests the entitlement trend and cushy gigs goes well down the totem pole even to the ordinary workers in there.
Two artistic directors from the UK just for the opening number.
They’re having a laugh.
Discommoded in Donnybrook. o/
725 million well spent.
This is a local show for local people! We’ll have no outsiders here!
I’m not saying that the staff were getting back-handers from the toy manufacturers and retailers, but something something.
Does anyone bar the parents of Billy Barry kids give a shite about the kids singing and dancing?
Never liked it as a kid or an adult. Seems like they’re doing it more. 50% of the toy show seems to be kids singing and dancing.
Abolish RTE and replace with minimal programming.
Any institution which is publicly funded and which has a grace and favour culture for getting on just hates outsiders blocking paths to freedom er promotion.
That said this appears to be RTE failing to read the room by spending on new “creative talent” for one part of one show.
Should stop calling RTE, RTE, and call them what they are; Montrose – an institution. Nepotism, conservatism and mediocrity.
Outsiders? Are these the same outsiders who took the corn from our mouths when the potatoes went rotten in the ditches?
I honestly think they over do the Toy Show hype. I grew up in Dublin and Cork when Gay Byrne was still presenting the Late Late and I can’t remember ever watching the Toy Show for more than a couple of mins.
I always get the impression it’s obsessed over by people who grew up in rural two channel land, without cable tv or one of those households that kept the TV in a locked cabinet and they weren’t only allowed to watch one programme per day.
It doesn’t chime with most people I know who grew up in an urban area and doesn’t seem to chime with modern generations either.
You get the sense RTE was trying to claim it’s some ultra important Christmas tradition, when the reality is it probably isn’t quite that.
There’s a bubble within RTE itself that seems to completely overrate that show , and you can clearly see that with the musical.
They genuinely thought everyone would be hyped about the stage show and it would be as popular as the launch of Krispy Kreme in Blanchardstown.
Instead, it was more like when some guy starts talking about Wanderly Wagon and everyone pretends they know what they’re talking about…
The budget for the Toy Show also used to be a Christmas jumper for Gay Byrne, a bit of tinsel and a few lights. Dustin the Turkey or Zig and Zag turned up took the piss out of ‘Uncle Gaybo’, some toys were demonstrated, a bit of singing and messing around and that was about the extent of it the high production values. It wasn’t trying to be Disney.
If they can make it better and deliver value for money.
At a time when people are furious with RTE’s financial ineptitude it’s mental that they’re still trying to force the annual Christmas episode of an outdated talk show into some kind of landmark cultural event with a “much anticipated theme” and elaborate song and dance numbers. The increasingly desperate attempts to squeeze viral moments out of kids with quirks or disabilities. The absolute gall of them trying to turn it into a musical. This kind of overproduction is totally unnecessary.
Just get a load of kids into the studio to play with toys, play a few songs and review some books. Don’t patronise the kids. Accept donations, give away some shite to the audience and let the sentimental moments come organically. It’s clear that RTE need to significantly dial back until they reach a point where they are somewhat competent.
Why can’t RTE have their old shows up on RTE Player? Like The Panel, Don’t Feed The Gondolas, a collection of Apres Matches would be nice too.
RTE staff have a job for life permanent unionised civil service mentality. We can’t do it that way because we always do it this way. Outsiders can’t do that because only Mary Joe can do that it’s been her job since 1986 and she is only 2 years from retirement. Then Mary Pat will get the job. She is 14 years from retirement. At that point we will be willing to discuss an outsider being appointed to a full time RTE position and doing the role exactly as Mary Joe has done so well since 1986.
