  7. this reeks of political posturing for internal consumption me thinks. and what would be his reason? turkey is in no way a position to dictate since it violently suppresses the kurds in turkey and syria (rojava). many war crimes and bombing of civilian areas even without military infrastructure at all. bad turkey. bad.

  9. I’m pretty sure that this is Erdogan trying to appease his voting bloc. He’s been running on an Islamist, neo-Ottoman platform for the majority of his career, so his voting bloc is mostly Turkish nationalists and hardcore Muslims. However, Turkiye is playing a dangerous game. In the long run, Israel is more important to the U.S. than Turkiye, and for a variety of reasons Russia and Turkey wouldn’t really want to ally with each other, so Turkiye can’t aggravate the USA too much.

    A land invasion is logistically impossible. In the Mediterranean between Turkey and Israel sits the US Navy so good luck with that. This leaves air power which is sold to them by whom? These statements are for internal consumption. Really who is the audience for this?

  24. Erdogan doesn’t have that power anymore. We saw how close he almost lost the election. Not only that, you need money to run a war. Especially as an invader. And Erdogan’s terrible management of the economy that has ruined Turkey with insane levels of inflation would prevent him from funding such a war and keeping the population happy.
    Empty threats that serve no purpose but to appeal to his hard-liner supporters.

  26. As a reminder, Israel is a nuclear power. you can not just invade them without risking your major cities being wiped from existence. This is a dangerous time to be in the middle east to be sure.
