Seems to be a marine distress signal. Would a helicopter rescue team use one to mark a location?

  1. I’d say to get an idea of wind speeds and directions

depending on the terrain there can be wind shear, vortexes, eddies etc. The smoke will show where the air is moving, it’s speed and direction, which can be critical when you’re close in

  2. Air or sea smoke location rescue device. 3 minutes worth of orange smoke going by the text

  3. Orange Smoke – Braemar apprentice boys lodge. Was a hell of a walk to the top of Ben Macdui..

  4. Might be used by mountain rescue crews to mark landing or winch zone for helicopter.

  5. It doesn’t look like it’s been used.
I’m not an expert, but the likes of military smoke grenades get hot and burn the paint on the outside.
