43. A little explanation of what "Tuaregs" are.

    Tuaregs (TWAH-regz) are a subgroup of the Amazigh peoples. Amazigh are called "Berbers" or "Moors" in older sources. Most Amazigh live in North Africa, where they make up something like 30% of the population from Tripoli westward to Mauritania. There they live mixed with Arabs, whose language was introduced to the area through the spread of Islam. Tuaregs are the Amazigh of the deep Sahara, extending into Mali to around Gao and Timbuktu.

    In 2011 Amazigh were important to the rebellion against Qadhāfi, for instance producing the first Libyan Amazigh-language media channels in collaboration with Al Jazeera. Arms then spread from there into Niger and Mali.
